i agree would be very good.

would be good to see some decent reviews of items which are up for grabs. I would worry it would because full of the bored brigade, posting random things all over the board though :(

not a good idea as videos change. You are not even meant to hotlink to external images within a thread, only to personally saved ones.

Videos don't tend to change.......their content only becomes outdated but that is true of all media.

It would be awful.

Full of spam from people who think they are comedy genius posting unfunny video after unfunny video.

People do that already by posting links. At least with this method you can see a video quicker.

Yeah and slow down page load times, up memory usage, and slow down older computers. At least with links I can decide "oh that poster is an unfunny idiot, I won't click the link", rather than having it forced on me.

Luckily, I know there is pretty much zero chance of the mods allowing this, so I'm happy.

Embedded youtube links don't work for me anymore don't know why. Using Firefox, the box and image shows up but when I click on it, it says error. I then have to click through anyway. Anyone got a clue? Either way only people who have been on here since 2007 should be allowed to post embedded videos.

You still have to click on the video to have it play, also you see the OP before clicking on a thread so your logic is a bit flawed. Also computers are not slowed down by an embedded video until you click on it which at that point in would be the same as the computer being slowed down by going on youtube.

I'm aware of that, I'm not a complete simpleton and I'm a web developer in part by trade. The embedded object and flash DO slow down page loading, and I will back the mods to the hilt on this.

Its not required and would be a major pain in the arse.

Technically very little is required apart from deals and comments for deals........and some things now are a pain.

I agree. but the lack of youtube embedding is not one of them.

Not really as it's no different to posting a youtube link in that regard.

Not sure if that is the case as embedded videos are the responsibility of the host site as aren't they physically embedded unlike a link?

I suggest you use it then rather than post inaccurate nonsense.

Also, please put me back on ignore. LOL! I knew you wouldn't last.

I take it no one else here is part of a forum that has embeded youtube links?

They work perfectly fine on the other forums im on, dont make any noticable speed difference at all.

They also never autostart, you have to click the play button for the video file and content to start playing.
#23
i vote in favor of having the option if you want to use it

there could be a little icon on the thread to show it has embedded videos, so those who dont want to have their computers slowed down by nanoseconds dont have to click on the thread

its not about that and you know it.

Why stop at youtube videos? Lets let everyone post unfunny videos from all sites hmm?

Shame, you had started to be more normal, but seems you've gone back to making silly nonsensical comments again.

Oh and matt: Do be quiet, nobody listens to you anyway.

I don't care if no one listens to me, i will voice my opinion anyway. ;-).

You need to stop your rambling before someone actually takes you seriously about what your saying.

The youtube videos when embedded do not actually load any content (other than the placeholder) until the user clicks play.

This will put less strain on a users computer than if someone embedded a 200kb+ image.

Plenty of sites utilise this feature and i don't see why this site shouldn't , just because some user with a massively inflated ego starts rabbiting on about nonsensical strains on the universe.

Even someones precious iPhone would support this (it loads it into the YouTube app when played).

read the first line of my last post. Geeze Matt, keep voicing that opinion... at least it makes sense in your head.

OK putting personal opinion aside...

This won't get implemented. It just seems at odds with admin's clear like of a simple, clean site.
You are right - I'm in the minority (at least from the replies in this thread), but I still don't think it will be implemented.

I agree, don't implement it.

If he wants a clean site then why not stop embedded images from showing also?

In my eyes there isn't much difference between the two. Both will be around the same filesize and they both will be of similar height/width.

I just think you're against this just for the sake of it.

I'm happy for pictures to be blocked outside of the deals and FS Board, but you couldn't block them there because they are actually useful.

I'm not. You say there is no slowdown, and there is very little, but every one adds a javascript overhead because whether you want to believe it or not, the browser till renders the even before pressing play, and thats not taking into account any flash overheads.

Thats not my main issue though. There are 100's on here who think they are comedians. I actually think you yourself would regret it if this got enabled.

Its too messy. Thats why I'm against it, but regardless of opinions and percentages, i don't think admin will do it anyway.

garbage456
quite simple, reviews on deals only.

Impossible to police really.

I personally think it's a good idea as long as it isn't abused, which could be the hardest part, Maybe stop people posting youtube videos if they are abusing the system?
#33
I understand there being overheads cos of the js used, but they would be minimal, as no video data is pulled until you press player, just the controls and a static image which wouldn't be more than a few 10's of lb.

I also don't understand the notion of not having it due to comedian, no one is forcing anyone to press play and the video never autostarts. It will be no worse than a silly picture being uploaded.

The only thing I would have against it is the fact that there's no way to control the content language wise, as this forum is family friendly (apart from the innuendos and hukd blogs)

It is minimal I agree, on my powerhorse of a laptop and my desktop. But (and I'm using this as an example - nothing more) on my netbook (Medion's version of the original MSI Wind), having flash objects and javascript - WITHOUT starting the video does make the old thing chug. I'm not talking about using data - I'm talking CPU mainly on certain netbooks.

On one hand you could say the site shouldn't pander to those with old/slow systems, but on the other hand, why should they suffer so you can post a "funny video"?

I like how you're trying to play me as one of these egotistical comedians when you should be looking closer to home ;).

I'll accept your point for netbooks primarily as i have no means to test it at the moment.
