Hmm... You mean you've set it up to send all deals posted? I think you can change it to suit which ones you want to receive.

I've always had it email me, but I can't tell it to not send me ones that stupid people have incorrectly filled in with no info can i?!! lol!

What about switching to RSS and setting a minimum temp nrps1? That should solve the problem no?
#4
I'm unable to see any posts with just 50% off and nothing more in the title.
#5
Ray, I know what he means.

It's when people fill in the vouchers - they often select the retailer and then in the title they just put "50% off" or "£10 off a £100 spend" for example.

Maybe Admin could change it so the title of the deal alert automatically begins with the retailer name??

e.g. "SVP: 99p postage at svp"

Where the bold bit is the automatically added bit. I was going to suggest this the other day as I've fixed a few forum titles which have had this problem.

There, Duckies hit the nail on the head.

I could switch to RSS, but you see I access this from all over the place, including work and setting up RSS at work would be pretty much impossible with our firewall, although my gmail emails are fine web based :)

I did actually try the new outlook express (windows live mail desktop, I think) and uninstalled it after it half killed my machine within 10 mins, copying and moving all 25,000 emails into a new directory....I even forced it to use a different drive and closed it, opened it and it killed pc again trying to copy to the drive it seems to deem better! Oh, the reason I'm babbling about this is because it has inbuilt RSS.... :)

Oh and won't that mean I'd miss some of the deals because they don't get to a valid temp, even though they may be things I'd be interested in?
#8
Although I it would appear you can have free web based RSS readers as well, so I could always do the RSS route, but not sure I can be bothered, emails are as handy as I need really!

If anyone is interested in web based free RSS readers, I saw this

Don't know how good it is, but its free and I guess does the job?

Ummm yes but isn't that what you asked for? If you want email alerts choose to be alerted on all and alerted by email. Or select options that you want to be alerted on and to be alerted by email. The only thing RSS has that email doesn't is the ability to set a minimum temperature.

no, i want my emailed deal alerts to be correct and factual, rather than the title being:

£10 off

As I want to know what the £10 is off of, ie what website, so they should read as the above example:

£10 off empirestores with £100 spend

And I also want the deal alert link to actually link to the correct page rather than saying error too! And also dont want to get two of the same deal within an hour of each other which I've noticed...
#12
Well, if a moderator sees a title is incomplete, I guess that's the only way we can sort that out until people get used to completing titles themselves.

The dead links are normally because the post has been moved off the forum before you get to see it.

lol, which leads me all the way round in a circle to

why are we getting every man and his dog posting deals incompetently, what was wrong with the old system? or is there a way to force better details on the emails before they are sent to everyone?!

am I just not getting my point across here?! lol!
#14
The old system meant that only moderators or Admin could decide which posts go on the front page. Whilst that was okay for some people, it's much better to have members post their own deals on the front page and to gradually get the reads, rates, replies that make it worthy or not of staying front paged for longer.

It really is better for everyone if members can be more involved in deciding for themselves, which are the best deals :)

Have there really been that many with a title lacking in substance? I didn't think there had... But if you would like to point them out to us, we can ask the poster nicely, to add a little more in the future :D

This whole thing is like a big learning curve to most of us and the more input from members, the better it should get.

I know that doesn't solve your problem right away, but hopefully it will soon...

Yeah I see where you are coming from, but still disagree to letting Joe Bloggs stick whatever they want up unmoderated, ok so i've only had about 1 or 2 dodgy emails aforementioned per day, but its still a little annoying! Can't it be done that they submit whatever they want and it goes in a 'queue' to be processed before its live and emailed? That would sort out both issues in one I think, as surely you cant expect everyone to know how to do it properly (trust no one in life!!)

I mean, I work in IT, and its like giving the users Local Admin rights to their PC's - total madness! The whole network would die within days if we were to do that to non trusted people!

I've noticed Emma the bingo queen has been gently informing people that we need some more info rather than just £10 off and thats it, in the subject and the post itself, so hopefully it will catch on, but I still see it being annoying all the time ;)

I'll gladly moderate a queue, I'm on this bad boy literally every hour or so most days if you want me to double check things! :D

If it's technically possible, a suggestion for admin would be to put a minimum temperature on the email alerts.

I see where you are coming from nrps1, but we're all just trying to get settled into the new forum, and admin's working very hard to get everything ship-shape.

I don't know if you've noticed the increased number of new recruits, there have been loads of new members! It tends to be these people, who are slightly more unfamiliar with the forum style, who are creating the posts you mention. We're trying to keep on top of this by asking for more information etc...

I personally never use the deal alerts, then or now. I'm content to browse the deals myself. But then again, I'm on here a lot, and some peeps found the deal alerts very useful.
#17
I appreciate you are all working hard :) I'd gladly help if there's anything you guys need help with!

I am on here quite a bit too, but I do like the deal alerts for when I can't be on here at all opportunities to browse :D although it does sort of fill up your inbox with thousands of deal emails lol!

Which reminds me, I think I've received 2 or 3 emails that just say Test, now surely one test is enough? Perhaps people don't realise that when they post deals they are emailed to thousands of people?

You know, it's surprised me how many more members have started posting deals since the forum change over. I think that's because they like to be able to interact and feel more a part of everything. Everyone has to start somewhere and there are plenty of people around to offer help or advice on how to get posts about right :) No one can mess up the forum by making a post, so it's not quite the same as letting someone loose with the website software or hardware. Posts are moderated more or less as soon as they're made and any unsuitable ones are removed as fast as possible [that's why you got some e-mails with dead links ;)].

So you have time to double check all of them too? It won't matter if you look in the forum every few minutes instead of waiting for e-mail alerts then eh? Hehe...

Nope, it's not just random people. We had problems where people couldn't post deals and we were getting error messages and things and so the Admins had to fix it, and they don't know if they've fixed it properly if they don't test it. ;)

A minimum temperature on deal alerts would be good... to be honest the minimum temperature is what you were saying!! If you set it to about 5, then surely deals would only go through if a few members thought they were worthy and had voted for them?? I think it is possible to conver an RSS feed to email if that helps?
#23
well wouldnt that mean I may miss some deal alerts? Do people vote for them even when they aren't headed correctly? I can imagine a few people saying this is a nice deal, but it being incorrect and I'd still get the deals incorrectly labelled, just later than normal so I possibly run the risk of missing the deal altogether?
