  I typed millies into search bar, then narrowed it down to freebies, plenty of people post things that never seem to appear for them but do exist, I use the site a lot daily so I spot these things :)

  If you search for Millies using the 'standard' (or "quick") Search, the thread is not returned.
  
  However, using "Advanced Search" (& narrowing to "Freebies", if desired) it is in the results:

  the search function on this site is pretty dismal. I find it's often better to go to google and search like this:

  the advanced search page is really stupid as there are two search buttons at the bottom of the page!

  There are? That is news to me! Looks like just one.
  
  If you have any specific complaints about the search we'd be glad to field them, but when you say things like "The search is terrible" it's not really constructive and we can't work to make it better.

  But don't forget, when searching, posts only become "searchable" after 1/2 an hour or so.
  So if you search, and something has only just been posted, you won't see it.

  
  
  The "Advanced Search" is rebuilt every 30 minutes, like you said. The regular "quick" search is rebuilt every 5 minutes.

  There is a Search button in the footer that is pretty close to the advance search form button which could cause some usability confusion.

  I don't know how many times I've clicked the footer.
  It (obviously) refreshes the page and loses all the terms that you had input for the search ...
