Agreed.

However, the width of the "Leave a Reply" box is still different to the resultant comment displayed.
It doesn't need to be; it could be the same width as the published comments in the thread.

...the "Compose Private Message" text area could also be wider than it is.

The width of our current comments are actually way out of whack with the max width recommended for reading - online or offline. So the solution is probably more to reduce the width of the comments than widen the box.

...but if you resize the window of a web browser the comments automatically wrap to accommodate the new shape of the window.

The comment (reply) boxes do not change shape at all; so they could be increased.

Perhaps adding a "handle" to the side of the comment boxes so they can be resized horizontally to match the current vertical resizing feature) would satisfy all parties?

[EDIT]: Either way, thanks for acknowledging the feedback thread. [/EDIT]

Yeah it does currently, but if we were to implement proper standards for readability we would have fixed width comments that were narrower than those which we have now.

...that's the best excuse for not following standards I've seen since reading Wally's replies in a Dilbert cartoon strip.

I think you are saying that you are not going to seriously consider increasing the width of the text-area boxes because if you did you would then be inclined to start following some form of standards that have not been applied to the site (yet) & have to make them smaller than they are now.

Or did I misunderstand your reply? ;)

Maybe... I'm not sure.

I'm saying in a longer term view - the problem is the width of the comments rather than the width of the text box.

I guess it could be Dilbert'esque.

If you are using IE8: once you have dragged the box, you need to click outside the box for it to stay that size and not cover the Submit etc buttons.

So, it does work; it just doesn't do what you thought it did.

It is the same in every browser (I have used so far).

The size of the box is reset every time a new page is loaded as the increased height (set by the user [at the client side]) is not retained [on the server].
