I agree.
It really lets the website down which is a shame because I spend so much time on here.

good question this, dont think its been asked b4.

Does the "search" function work correctly on this site

Yes it does, if you want to learn how to use it correctly, read this thread:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/130751/

The search is carp and instead of fixing it they waste their time with an add to facebook button. The only thing you can do is when you see something you might be interested in subscribe to the thread and then it's in your control panel. Of course that's no good if you're actually searching for something without having seen it before.

Do you have to tag an thread properly for the search facility to work correctly?

No, the search function does not search tags, it has been suggested for the tags to be put to better use, but so far ignored.

tbh Ive not had any problems using the search...its like searching on google...over egg it and your not gonna get the results your looking for

I found it by typing "star trek" in the basic search box ...then using the filters down the right side of the page to filter "deals" then "entertainment" ...in text only mode it appears on the first page just below half way down...probably page 2/3 on a full mode

as you say...its a basic search box...as you can see, searching on star trek produces alot of results, because its probably been posted about alot in the various forums...plus your searching on all those words "box" and "set" are going to be in other topics unrelated

If you put double quotes around the search it will search for all the words as one exact phrase...do that and the result will appear first :)
#10
each time i try to search "TV" it comes up with nuthing. ?????, but when i look at the deals theres lots of posts about TV's. try it for your self.
help would be appreciated.
#11
Just use advanced search, never let me down before.
#12
from experience...the word "TV" is too short ...try TV*

...much like Wii used to be too short so I was using Wii*, but now produces results with Wii :)

The forum search would have been configured to have a minimum character search...to stop people cooking the database with searches for small words

LOL its that simple that a search for "star trek" brings up a Paddy McGuinness DVD half way down the first page :?
looks like you have to give this "search" box all the clues ( if you can remember them)
probably more chance of finding the thread through google :-D

That's because the thread contains the word "Star". :)

Quite possibly the worst search function on any forum I've been a member of.

Yeah advance search is decent enough and you can read the instructions on how to use it but come on its a search function. I mean how many potential click throughs does this site lose because the casual browser finds the site, has a quick look round then decides to look for something, types it in the search box and it comes up with nonsense from 2 months ago. they then head over to mse. Its no use to them knowing that if you hunt about then theres instructions on how to conduct a basic search.
the sheer number of thses types of threads should've meant that the basic search function was improved years ago.
#18
lol...the search, searches for words you give it...so giving it star trek will return posts with the words "star" and "trek" ...not the two words side by side. put them both in the search between " " and it will search them side by side as a phrase. You then use the filters down the RIGHT side of the screen to narrow the results. If its a star trek dvd, then you'd select "entertainment" and possibly "deals" or the "FS/T" for private sales. I think this is where many may be going wrong. You filter a search through the forum filters on the right side of the screen after using the basic search...the links at the top are just that...links to the forums.

My girlfriend types in long sentences into google expecting good results...your just not going to get them with often used words...keep it simple...its a simple search :)

Even searching the words star trek without quotes I found the topic. I doubt many people actually search on specific topics anyway...if they were I think they would be more than casual users.

I can imagine people think its the worst search ever, but when you think of the size of the forum its searching through, you have to give it some credit.

If anything Id say the advanced search is not as good as the basic one

I used to think the search was useless until I bothered to read how it operates. Basically I never use the SEARCH on the main page as advanced search works perfectly.

I would remove the basic search as it isn't very good and just have the word SEARCH which takes you to the advanced search page

put in +Star +trek +Next +Generation +box +Set

2nd deal down is the one you are after so it does work if you read how to search properly ;)

lol...as I said..."Star trek Next Generation box Set" ...include the quotes and you get returned with this topic and that one only :)
[helper]#24
The advanced search does work but (and its an important but) it is not intuitive.

The default boolean operator when you type in mulitple words appears to be "or". So if you type in Star Trek it searches for star or trek. A simple but significant improvement would be to change the default to use an implicit "and" when you type in multiple words......so it would search for Star and Trek.

I know you can already do this by using the plus symbol but that requires individuals to read the instructions.....

Well said gari, that is the biggest single fault with the search on HUKD and has been since the switch from the standard vBulletin search.

While we are on booleon functions, can we have the use of more of them, nand would be useful for a start.

good to get a good ole' rant out in the open :)

No it is the worst search function that I have ever seen. For example if I was to look for any "24" DVD's or products and I type "24" into the search box it returns with "Sorry. No matches found. Please try changing your filter options and searching again." But in reality there are 19 "24" products in "deals". So, when people complain about double posting of products I can fully understand how and why deals get posted more than once.

if you bothered to read the instructions, you'd see that 3 letters is the minimum search word length :whistling:

Bummer that it's called "24" then:thumbsup:

OK. There are dozens of Dr Who products listed in deals but again, if you type "Dr Who" it returns with "Sorry. No matches found. Please try changing your filter options and searching again." The HUKD search facility is indefensible. It doesn't work, and when it does it is hit and miss. For example, type in "toaster" and it returns some toaster but also "Majorca HB winter weekend break £67 per person with Alpha Rooms". Hmm, not exactly what I was looking for.

its going to reply with topics with the word toaster in them...that topic has that word lol

28 december 2007 just back, had a brilliant new year, weather was lovely thru the day, chilly at night time. Lots of the pubs etc closed but plenty good ones open, The Crown, Glasgows and Katies in the square. The rooms were nice and clean but no toaster !! would definitly come back here in the summer, good value for money

well if you had selected the search for TITLES ONLY then it would just bring back toaster threads. RTFM! ;-)

And your point is that if we want to search for anything which contains a two letter word then we can't search for it. Not sure if you are defending HUKD's search facility or not:thinking: But surely if you can't search for anything that contains two letters then it is bobbins. I might go and look for a "The The" CD now. That should be fun.:whistling:

Yes. And your point is exactly Mr Saint?

You cannot search for anything with under three letters; so bang goes "24, Dr Who etc". Bang goes a search for a "CD". If you know how I can do a genereal search for "Dr Who; 24; CD" then let me know 'cos I've missed it (in this thread) and even adding a "+" doesn't solve the pronlem.

you would think searching for "Star trek Next Generation box Set" would show this link up..
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/302387/star-trek-next-generation-box-set-4/

Stick it in inverted commas. It's the only result in the deals section. But honestly - less is more... searching for "star trek" for example... omitting the words box set, as hundreds of threads will have the words box set and that factors into the relevance of the results.
