from what I understand, you can Add to the OP, but not change it with a low rep
#2
Do you have a link to point this out?
#3
link

although it doesnt actually show it now as JB removed the posts and banned the member, i tried to edit the post to remove the offending remarks but got a message saying i didnt have enough rep, i thought fair enough i dont have that much... but the offending member had less.
[admin]#4
Emma will be able to see the deleted posts though Guerilla so she can see what's happened.
I've also pasted the comments the member added to the op in caroline072's profile.
#5
They didn't edit the OP, just add to it.
#6

the member atkined edited/added to this post

well how do you add to it?

By clicking the edit button.... the forum rep you see is not the "actual" rep figure used to calculate your forum status. Your actual rep is calculated on other things, such as length of time on forum, hot deals posted etc. This is what decides whether you can add to someone else's OP.
#9
Yeah nothing was changed to the OP but insults were added.

I thought only mods and original poster could change the original post but anyone (with a high enough rep) could add to it. Just wondering why in this instance guerilla with a higher rep could not and caroline could.

Ooops too slow :)

Thanx.
#10
so actual rep and the rep bally things are completely different beasts?

Yep

Actually, quote from admin which explains your voting rep, which is the "rep" I am talking about:
admin

The voting rep is based on the temperature of deals you have submitted, the time registered, number of posts, and forum rep. The first is by far the largest and the other factors are there to balance it out and give some voting rep to people who spend their time helping others etc in the forum.

I think that is what denotes your ability to add to OPs....

(Admin correct me if I am wrong)
#13
As I've said in the linked post, I would've thought that other people being able to edit posts should only apply to the Deals, Vouchers, and Freebies sections, not Misc, Deal Requests, or Feedback sections (For Sale & Trade is already set to not allow).
#14
well then maybe a rethink of the calculation is in order then because this member was well out of order. i can only think that length of time on forum must play the biggest part as the member did not have many hot deals (ps i do realise i have none)

edit: had not seen Emma's post above,
#15
I never knew you could do that, I would hate to think of people editing my posts, I wouldn't dream of editing someone elses. Do we get notified if someone amends our post?
#16
well andreahh24 didn't know till someone told her so i guess you don't get a notification
#17
Agent_Silver
Do we get notified if someone amends our post?

No, I suspect it'd probably require a fair bit of coding for very little return to do so (since in many cases such as deal posts, not everyone would want to be notified about it).

I understand that, and I know people fail to post with links, pictures, retailers etc. and I would expect a mod to amend a post, however, I wouldn't expect another forum member to be able to go in and amend my posts, surely if you can get to a level to be able to amend OP's you should be able to get to a level to lock OP's from modification other than by mods....if that makes sense.

Other posters are unable to modify what has already been put by the OP, only add to it - unless they are a mod.

No worries, it's easy to misinterpret things sometimes :)
#22
So, have I understood this correctly?
Anyone with a high enough rep can edit an original post but only by adding to it. Only mods would know the identity of the member doing the editing, the OP wouldn't.
Only Admin knows the actual rep of a member & thus who is entitled to alter OPs.
Does this apply to all parts of HUKD?
Could we all have a go at editing the OP of this thread? Oh, could we guerrila?:)

So, as you said ^^^. Thanks x

Hmm..that seems a bit too easy to do, especially as my rep isn't that high. You can also add tags even if they are duplicate which could really clutter up some deals.

It's not really rep, but "Status" that allows you to edit a post according to what emma said earlier in the thread.

Most people don't add tags, so I don't think that this is much of a problem anyway.

I would like it if we were able to edit titles, then I could correct the typo in the one for this thread. :)

Your last point pretty much highlights the issue here, in most cases where an original post needs modified it's to change it by editing the description, a picture or editing the title which mods can do (and frequently need to) but we cannot. Given some of the 'debates' that already erupt in deal discussions I dread to think what will happen when more people find they can modify the first post.

Before the forum change, it was possible to add to 1st posts, so there was only a few weeks when this privilege was accidentally disabled. So, there would be no more people adding to 1st posts than before.

Adding to the 1st post is not the same as "modifying" in my understanding of what goes on. "Modifying" suggests that you can alter what someone has already written.
#35
Is the original poster able to re-edit the post to remove any aditional comments?

I'm just thinking if someone does jump the gun and post a comment that isn't warrented or accurate, it would help if the OP could remove it.
1 Like #36
yep i just checked and when i click edit i can remove all of the additions from my post

That's good to know and should put a lot of minds at rest. Thanks guerilla. :)

Interesting thread, I have no rep though and I can edit (technically add to!) the OP above?
#39
are you certain? if you can it must be to do with the length of time in the forum

Yep, just tried ^^^. Sorry for adding to the clutter on your OP! :whistling:

EDIT: like you say, must be due to my age!
