Hi :) Thanks for your suggestion. When Ask was introduced it was intended to be different from the other section of the site and have its own functions suitable to the content being shared. You've been around for a while so no doubt you will remember the old "Deal Requests" section.

If we displayed upvoters then we'd also have to display downvoters. That could lead to issues such as retaliatory voting and discussion not in line with our Code of Conduct. Constructive discussion is fine!

If you believe someone is downvoting unfairly then send a report and we can take a look.

Then, would it not make more sense to remove downvotes altogether?
No downvotes = no retaliation. :)

If someone is downvoting (in Ask or Deals etc) then i'd hope they can back up their reason with a comment. That is what I meant about the construction discussion. Removing downvoting would in effect make some sections redundant because everything would be hot or upvoted. I appreciate people can just then decide to not vote but that means nothing can ever go below 0 so thats incredibly limiting for a platform like HUKD.

Well, I've seen a good 100+ posts that are 100% accurate, that end up with a score of minus 20 or worse...
All that happens is people leave/stop using the site because there's such a bad atmosphere amongst some users.
If someone leaves an answer that's incorrect, someone should comment on it saying how and why it's incorrect. If the answer is defamatory etc then it should be reported.
Why not have the Like system applied to both sections? That way people can give kudos to correct answers, without the pathetically passive-aggressive swarms of downvotes I've seen on so many occasions.

This, exactly this.
It happens all over the net, ability to downvote does nothing but add a negative variable.
Completely useless and causes more harm than good, every time.

EDIT - Sorry I actually disagree though, my understanding is that your supposition actually breeds the opposite.
Down voting is nearly always done on partisan grounds and becomes political and about personal values all to often.
There are a lot of stupid people in the world and we are all capable of being stupid.

There are more stupid people than intelligent people so down voting doesn't work.

EDIT2 - Sorry not sure if this kind of thing is open to public feedback from other members, if not please ignore my comment.

I'm confused? I want downvotes removed for the reasons you listed...
Unless you voted Leave, in which case I want them left as they are!

lol, it's late I'm confused what we're talking about probs need some sleep! Will try and decipher what this request is about tomorrow :)
I thought it was about being able to down vote comments. I don't really agree with that as it leads to mob mentality and shunning of perfectly intellectually honest statements, even if it does move some silly posts to the place they deserve to be. That is subjective though isn't it.

...I just made a comment on a Donald Trump thread, for example!!!! :S

I 'think' I understand the posters request . I think he wants to be able to see who voted and in which way. So you can see who had given a positive vote and who had given a negative vote by clicking a link and getting a list.
Where he says "just a comment's "score", it's  it should be. "just a deals "heat", it's . At least that's my interpretation of things.
I can understand his frustration-people vote the most unusual things hot (I had 28 people vote hot on a deal I posted and soon realised it was a terrible company-I changed the title to say this, put the price to a ludicrous price, and put warning comments on the(not so) deal). 25 of these people voted after I had changed the description!
However I don't believe it would be of any benefit to know who voted other than by their comments.

I take no notice of voted or heat..I do read the comments and make my own mind up from them.

Hi, this is essentially what I'm aiming at, but not with regards to deals; instead in the Ask / Misc sections of the site. These use a Up/Downvote system or Likes respectively for people's answers / comments.
The problems are the same as with Deals, where the most ridiculous, incorrect and biased answer/comment can be voted to high heaven; but a completely accurate and well-informed voice can get shot to pieces for no reason at all other than that people don't like what they've been told.
If people knew that they would be visible as the person who had downvoted the post, I think they would be less likely to do so, or more likely to try to explain why they did so.

Or, a more rational (and easy to implement ;) ) method would be to just have both pages work in the way of the Misc section, and get rid of downvotes altogether and only have a Like button.

Alternatively change it so you can't vote without leaving a comment. It won't stop people leaving stupid one word comments but it would leave their 'opinions' open to interpretation by others who want to make a reasoned judgement.

At the very least, you should make the ask voting equal

Its ridiculous how you can downvote every comment but only upvote one comment.

I'll get some feedback put across for that. I agree to a certain extent. I suppose the thinking is that there can only be one correct answer but from time to time I see many useful contributions and voting aside it is then up to the OP to pick the "Best Answer" from those replies.

But it becomes difficult for the op when every answer has negative scores. There can be many good answers, many of which have negative scores.

Just make it consistent. One up & down vote per thread or unlimited of each.

I honestly had no idea you could only Upvote one answer!!!
How ridiculous!

Most people don't realise hence why most of the early good answers in a thread aren't positive compared to the last good answers

Crazy situation!
#18
Exactly!
On the mobile site, I can Upvote as many as I like, they all look Upvoted, then all but the last one get deleted when I leave the page.
Bizarre!

Talk about instilling a negative atmosphere! How counterintuitive!

The MOD team don't deal with this directly, it's already been passed over for review and any updates we receive will be posted here.
