When you say search box vertically do you mean horizontally?

I don't like a really busy front page but I think a text only option may solve some of that?

Lastly, nothing is left off the front page if it's hot. It shows the latest deals voted over temperature x by members. If it's not hot it doesn't show, if it is it does.

What I would prefer as the front page Admin is a list of the hot deals..hence more to the page...if you want the fine detail of the deal you can click on the deal...I know this available elsewhere but I'd prefer it as the front page...just me I guess as it takes so much time turning each page...particularly at busy times.

Text only list currychops? Like "merchant - deal title - temperature"
#4
that would be nice
#5
sorry if this is slightly off topic...but ive noticed that some deals on the front page are at 30 degrees..hot...and some that dont get to the front page are 40 degrees. so...i dont see that once it reaches a certain temp it goes on the front...as ive seen loads with more temp than those on the front...????

yeah i think text only too...or have a small merchant logo...the deal title..and price or something. as it would fit more deals on too...i sometimes only look at the front page i cant sit and scroll thru all the pages when i only have 5 mins..

also i was thinking the other day...there could be a top 10 hotdeals, hottest at top. as the front page is more the newst..which is good cos you wanna get in b4 they all go kinda thing. but maybe a hottest too...

I think there's a time factor involved too. So if a deal goes to 30 on the day it's posted, it'll go on the front page. However, it might not get voted over 30 until it's been there a while longer and the newer deal will take precedence [I think].
#8
i guess that would make sense.....but im sure ive noticed some higher...and thought....i wonder if the mods/admin just didnt like that deal lol. ive noticed it with a few things..but never thought of asking
#9
No we can't make any deal post go anywhere else but its voted position [unless it's spammed, expired or deleted]

:pirate:

Yes i meant horizontal

But yer I'd much rather text listings, ala say the reg/the inq/google ig type columns of info, but neater, and even if possible custom cookie based options on type of hot deals etc, time elapsed, custom option to add/remove columns (for those with lower or higher screen resolutions) etc

It's asking alot for a non-profit site I suppose considering how much is already done, but it would be v nice

PS: Not that I think its very necessary, but an about us and contact us link for front page visitors not wanted by the site?

Ok got you schizoboy. I do have some ideas on ice about customisable front page so I will take your thoughts on board too. I think we could make a page using the Deal Alerts settings so you could set which categories you want or merchants and a temperature level as well as full details, text only or columns layout. I don't see this getting done for a bit though, might be January thing as everything is pretty busy here.

We're not non-profit by the way, we are trying to make money so any suggestions that make the site better are very much welcomed!!

Hm I thought HUKD was non-profit for some reason, ala MSE, but MSE isn't either in a way, but they are, like reesit muttons site, very clear about which links are affliated and benefit the site etc, so I assume all links here benefit HUKD?

Not that I am complaining I know forums which are strict to the point of insanity about making sure every single quoted site is done via their script so as to affliate that forums tracking and hence make them money, with banners etc, so I appreciate how lax and tidy HUKD is, it's MUCH NICER to use.

Nice to know tho ;-)

Here, some links are affiliated, some are not, so technically not all links benefit HUKD.

With the way the deal submission works, if a site is affiliated, the link is put in automatically, which is handy. I've seen some forums that insist you add in their affiliate link to your posts - which I think is a bit much for a normal member to do.

The thing that really gets me is censorship, nazi facist type censorship (this is mild language for me on this matter, edit as needed) where they block out cashback sites even if it's mentioned on a retailer they don't affiliate with but the cashback site does therefore COSTING people money for the sake of censorship, but I'm going off topic and ranting...:|

schizoboy - No we are not non-profit and if people buy through our links we do make money. However, the thing is that we do not have anything on the site just to make money with...there's no ads etc. and everything is here whether we are making money from it or not. If there is a link we will use it but it doesn't matter either way.

You brought up MSE and the philosophy is the same as there in that the content of the site is not influenced by making money. From reading on MSE, Martin is going to be redefining and limited what he calls "non-profit driven" as the site clearly is a money making site but many people think it isn't (read here for the kind of money he is making).

To me the user experience is more important than anything and things like links are secondary. HUKD has to be the best resource out there for members first of all and I want to make sure that money comes second.

I like that. You don't often hear comments like that
I'd rep you Paul but there ain't no point :giggle: is there?

I second dino's comment, user's experience coming 1st is great, MSE's philosophy might be applaudable but their forum design is horrific, HUKD is wubly :-D

That's what kept me here from the word go, no materialistic banter, no flashing advertising banners, no giving of information for personal gain, it's been "search for the better deal that will benefit as many as possible and be fair to everyone into the bargain", for well over two years. There aren't many websites that let you discuss any kind of competition as it affects their "income". Of course money is needed to keep HotUKDeals going, but it's not what drives it and that is one of the most important things to me...

I'm not just singing Paul's praises because he's the Administrator here, but because he deserves praise, for being fair to everyone, wanting open discussion, keeping members interests at heart, not being influenced by those who might want to create or take advantage in advertising for their own self interest, protecting members from spam and scam, right down to the design of the website [as this thread was meant to be about ], for it to suit the majority rather than minority who use it. I think it does just that and is continuing to improve the more members become involved with it...

Sorry that went a bit off topic too :)
