Require a link to item and do a url check like Digg does. Slated for development and should be live sometime in the new year... probably end of Jan.

Sounds good. HUKDs is effective a customised Digg site really isn't it. Works well though.

About this time last year... all hell broke loose after the new look!

So what about offline deals?
[admin]#6
Well it wouldn't be able to prevent those :)

Right now when you submit a deal it shows you the most recent 5 for that merchant. That seems a pretty good tool but whether people use it is another question.

We'll never prevent 100% of dupes. The idea is to keep it down to a manageable level while still giving people flexibility to share deals and variations on deals.

Phew! Thought you were going to stop people posting offline deals, then.... ;-)

Maybe make the last 5 deals a lot bigger, in a red container with "Important: Read this first" headers. Its a little lost at the moment, and may be why people seem to ignore it?

Can we stop all the "This is so cute" or "I'm bored at work" threads too. This should be about good deals, not a general chit-chat forum!

They're in the misc section, you don't have to look there if you don't want to see them.

Personally I don't use them but they're in the right section.

Deals go in the Deals section - you can then specify the category, such as electricals; home, etc.

Misc is a kinda general chit-chat forum, lol! People can post what the want in there (within reason). You'll see games, questions, jokes, news, etc... that's what that part of the website is for

I know it's too late to implement now, but it would've been better if it listed all deals submitted in the last 7 days or so.

Retailers such as Amazon, play.com etc etc, have so many deals submitted, that the last 5 deals is too short.

I would guess that I could list a game from play.com, and within an hour or two, it wouldn't appear on the list of the recently submitted deals for the next person submitting the same deal.
[admin]#16
Yes but no-one is going to read through 200 deals to see if it's a dupe either.

is everyone just hit the spam button (and popped in reason) for dupes rather than voting cold and hitting expire it wouldnt be so much of a problem

Yes, I understand that. I was just pointing out that the last 5 deals is not enough.
With the new system, it will be a lot better, although I will miss spamming multiple dupes. :-(

I have started expiring dupes and then report for a mod to remove. I know it creates more work for the moderators, but I hate to see -200 degree threads just because it's a dupe.

if you put spam in a post, others will spam it, making more work for mods isnt going to help stop dupes :?

Putting spam in a post should make people spam it, but not before a few dozen have voted it cold.
I didn't say that expiring it will help stop dupes. Spamming them doesn't help stop dupes either.

i just dont see the point in expiring a deal when you could hit spam, yes i see your point about it hitting zero temps but causing more work for mods is pretty pointless when the majority of the time it tales two members to spam a thread, educating members to properly use the sapm and expire button is better than causing the mods more work, only my opinion like

No, you're right. Although a report on a thread you've spammed is really useful too, so that we know you've spammed it. That way we can try and make sure that the OP knows why it's been removed, and we can understand why it's been spammed if it's not entirely obvious at first. :)

I have been "educating" members about spamming and expiring for months. I even wrote a thread about it. :)

Is it any better, I don't think so.

I remember saying to you a while back that I write in a thread that with the reason I have spammed a deal with a link to the other deal.

You replied that it was pointless because they probably don't get to read it because as soon as someone else spams it, it disappears immediately.

I then replied that I was at least doing something.

#24
Simple solution to all that guys, rename the spam button the spam/duplicate button. Then people would know which one to hit for a duplicate. At the moment it's not really obvious is it?
#25
If the search was better I would have thought that the amount of duplicates would be less

It would be better, but as Admin has stated that there will be a new system in place soon.

I bet most dupe posters don't even search before posting.

The spam button is all very good, but I think that the OP is somewhat addressing the issue of stopping people from wasting time posting them, rather than how we can remove them...

I got to the stage where i realised i had to post i had spammed it before spamming it, because it became obvious people werent saying they had spammed it, so i would hit the spam button and then it had gone, trouble is i wasnt going to sit there long enough to see before hitting the spam button and would browse elswhere and forget to go back and hit spam after some time - lol

as for reporting a thread spammed, i thought the idea of spamming was for autoremoval and to save on reports, oh well onwards and upwards

I know that I shouldn't be expiring, I have only done it once or twice up to now, but I hate to see people getting ridiculous cold threads simply for posting a dupe.

If spammed dupes didn't affect their voting power, I wouldn't bother expiring. It's especially hard on new members.

yes i have seen this too, and have asked in threads for people not to vote cold because its a dupe but to spam, suppose all we can do is carry on trying to help others use the right buttons, so to speak - lol
[mod]#31
When a deal is member spammed it will be MOD checked so we can let the OP know why it has been removed etc if they don't already.

If a deal is getting voted very cold & it's a dup & you're waiting for another member to Spam it as well, or it's been expired, then please use the report button http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/custom_buttons/report.gif so we can hopefully remove it quickly from main board. We really appreciate this type of info as it's a big help to us & the member concerned. I know both of you (sassie & thesaint) are really great at this already.

I can't understand why members vote a duplicate cold - I think even hitting expired is better than that.

Because if they hit cold it brings it to my attention to see why and i can still spam it, if they expire it i cannot do anything!!

You could always you a custom search to help find dupes...

oh Gary... you do some great work here with the HUKD tools - but thats just a google custom search! typing site:[url]www.hotukdeals.com[/url] into google has the same effect :P

indeed it does... which is why i call it a "google custom search" because thats what it is...

but you have to remember to type that every time, not everyone has the understanding to do that, especially users of this site, the colour scheme matches hukd and it works better than the hukd search - but i always call it what it is, a custom google search.

EDIT: noticed i didnt call it google in the post above tho haha... but the google logo is on it.

Whilst you quoted me out of context, I was referring to new or inexperienced members who see a duplicate & why their reaction to that would be to vote it cold & do nothing else - no report, no spam, no expire etc. I was considering the reasoning behind their actions & my comments were addressed to previous posts by sassie & thesaint & carrying on their debate.

We don't need to have threads brought to your attention, we need them spammed & possibly reported - I even have it in listed my signature & I make a point of PM'ing people who don't seem to realise what the spam button is for.

Thanks.

1. I didn't see your other post.

2. Most of the dupe posts i see have been expired so i cant spam them. Which i quoted someone else.

3. You obviously do need threads brought to my attention as the amount of dupes i spam and report is ridiculous. If you spent more time cleaning the forum than attacking members opinions then this place would be a lot better. :whistling:

EDIT: Also when i say "my" in this post and the pervious one, its more in reference to an experienced HUKD user than just myself.

Gary, it was one post #32 - you quoted only the last sentence of it & said my comments didn't help. I wasn't attacking anyone, I was just pointing out that you only quoted a selected part & highlighting the correct procedure for dealing with duplicates. I haven't attacked anyone's opinions, just highlighted my full single post & not just a portion of it as you did.

............................

So to state correct procedure again, please SPAM duplicates & if they have been expired then please use the report button - this will bring it to the attention of all online MODs and we will remove it as soon as possible, thanks

Link?

Neither button seems to cover duplicate deals, which at worst just dilute any heat over two or more deals.
