Do we have a / some developers working full time on this site?
It seems that existing problems aren't getting fixed let alone worrying about new stuff.
Like when you click to add or subtract heat, you quite often get a scroll bar appear beside the temp when you click.
What's that all about. Been reported ages ago, nothing done.
And when changes do get done, who is it done for? 'cos it doesn't always seem to be for the user / funder.

Just my two penny worth.

couldnt agree more!

This is way to complex for me too! Im out! lol

There'll be some other competitions coming up soon that everyone can get involved in.

Re the developers- they're constantly working to improve the site and fix glitches, often ones that you guys don't even get chance to notice. We're still going to work on new stuff in the meantime though, and we know there are a bunch of members using smartphones and other methods to access HUKD data so hopefully there will be some good submissions.

As much as I love the idea of an API being published, I'm not sure we have enough devs capable of putting anything useful together. Still I hope we do.

However, as someone else has said, can't we fix the long-term problems first?
[mod]#10
Good idea........i like having new little tools to play with. :)

wouldnt their time be better spent fixing the major bugs? :-D

1. normal search is as broken as ever

2. vouchers now a complete mess on screen and most dont apply to the deals anyway.

3. only 3 link pages on screen when consensus was that 10 was far better.

All we seem to get from the developers are completely ill thought out changes and feedback is just completely ignored.

Been waiting for something like this thats for sure!!... not sure i have the time at the moment will have to see how things pan out.
#15
So how will developers promote their applications using the new API if one of the forum rules prevents any form of self promotion?
#16
The threads on this site now have two different links that are not interchangeable... the normal and the mobile version, it seems that the API only allows for the normal link... is there a way so that it outputs the mobile links?

Normal search works fine csiman, it's just knowing how to use it. Yeah it needs tweaking, but the results are so varied it's a tricky one.. I mean look how many deals are on this site, say someone is searching for "Playstation".. do you want the results in chronological order of when posted.. or most relevant result.. or most popular result.. or maybe chronological order of the last time they were bumped.. there are loads of variations that the developers have to take into account and pleasing everyone is nigh on impossible.

2. vouchers now a complete mess on screen and most dont apply to the deals anyway.

Voucher tool - it's your opinion that they're a mess on screen. "Most don't apply to deals" :? They're there as an option to help members remember to use relevant vouchers when clicking through to the deal. It's easy to forget to do another search for any vouchers that may be useful- this helps to showcase what's available.

csiman

3. only 3 link pages on screen when consensus was that 10 was far better.

If you're clicking through deals and you want to go to page 7, just replace the number on the end of the URL.. so here is the quiz thread http://hotukdeals.com/item/400742/join-us-in-the-hukd-daily-quiz-open/showthread.php?t=400742&page=51
Change the page number on there.
This issue only really applies to massive misc threads and big deal discussions, a lot of deals & vouchers don't end up with pages and pages of discussion so this doesn't really apply.

csiman

All we seem to get from the developers are completely ill thought out changes and feedback is just completely ignored.

It's been said before, we get literally thousands of comments and emails from members with ideas.. we don't ignore all but we can't please everyone. The developers work really hard trying to keep the site moving forward and whereas a lot of updates end up being tweaked and adjusted following member feedback, the majority are an overall success. Look at when the site updated over 18mths ago- how many people said that it was unusable and they wanted the old site back? Now look- most of them are still here, are skilled at using the site and we now have nearly 200,000 registered members aswell as countless guest browsers.
What I'm trying to say is noone likes change, but change happens, everything evolves and that's exactly what HUKD is doing constantly- It's evolving.

Thanks Gary :) You've got 6 weeks! Sure you can rustle something up!

Umm... in 6 weeks i have to learn JAVA programming for blackberry lol

Yeah thats quite an importaint thing as if these are on mobile devices needs linking to the mobile links.

Off topic alert:...

This still isnt fixed!!!... http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/146772/issue-show-printable-version/

Only been 1 year 5 months!! lol

I want the profile ID to be a member of the api_item class. Also can we get a cross domain policy file hosted on the server that will allow access to the avatar images?

Also it would be nice to have an API call to add/remove heat. Although this will require some kind of user authentication. Maby for v2?

Cheers

Can submissions be actual native applications, for example an iPhone app?
Are competition apps listed on a page somewhere for people to try? If so will links to the itunes app store be allowed?

Will a full list of apps submitted and runners up be listed after the competition closes?

"do you want the results in chronological order of when posted."

Er, yeah, just like search works on every other siteI visit. Many people agree that the normal search on here is broken. I know I'm not on my own here

Voucher tool - it's your opinion that they're a mess on screen.

Looks broken to me. I'd rather have people sometimes forgetting to put on a voucher than see 20 attached to a deal and have to look at every one of them to see if it applies to the deal. Common sense if you ask me.

Thats a great way of evolving - used to just click on the link for page 7 but now have to phaff around changing urls! :whistling:

It also seems that the "Expired" tag to the thread titles are not displayed when getting the info from the API?

Hello, Can we have a live pop up chat box, like they do on facebook? So that we can see who is online and if there are any problems then we can talk live to a mod or another hukd user. Maybe something like the image below?

Just looked into it, no way i can learn JAVA in 6 weeks... i will stand back and wait to see what others can come up with.

Might be an idea to advertise this on the various phone forums?

Hey you think that's a problem, remember if you're an iPhone developer you got to submit it for review before you can release it into the big bad world. Currently this is taking at least two weeks.....which means you have even less time.:w00t:

Am a developer by profession.
Should crack this :w00t:

I suspect I'm in a similar position to Gary. I know my stuff as far as online applications goes but too actually port something to any of the devices listed I simply wouldn't know how to approach it, I don't even own any of them which would make testing outside of a virtual device a challenge.

I will look in to things, but don't think I'll be able to enter unless web based applications were to somehow be allowed :)

Likewise. I already have a head start on this, so should be able to get a v1.2 out before the closing date. ;-)

does the app need to be built for the phones or could i build a web based one to work on mobiles ?

basically a search function for mobile users
#34
iPhone App! Can't believe no one is talking about.. I'd really love someone (or may be me) to develop an user friendly iPhone App for HUKD! I'm currently doing my masters project on a iPhone App (learning process)... may be I might work on one later.

Any takers?

im using firefox and get errors using the api

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

IN ie6 it displays the xml of the file

Anyone else notice that the prizes for each category are the mobile phones that most likely the developers will already be using to develop the app on. Kind of a pointless prize, all the winner will do is immediately sell the prize as they will have no use for it.

Also its a shame there are only categories for mobile apps. I would like to write an AIR app :)

I'm not too clued up other than the very, very basics of php, i.e. hello world (!) but wanting to give this a shot. Can multiple merchants be called and how would this be done, would they be inserted into the url making the call eg

http://api.hotukdeals.com/rest_api/v1/?key=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx&merchant=PC-World and Dixons and Currys and ???

or would there have to be some function or multiple calls and then grouping the results into one output behind the scenes?

You would have to get your application to combine them.

But the prizes didnt cost HUKD anything (i dont think) so it makes sense for them.

Aw, this isn't fair - no prize for us WinMo coders?
