With so many new ways of accessing data, we've introduced the new Hotukdeals API.

Please post any feedback, relevant comments, issues, developmental ideas and suggestions for improvement within this thread so they can be addressed and we can hopefully work together in making this thing a success.

Thanks everyone, and we hope you enjoy making use of the new tools and data.

iPhone App! Can't believe no one is talking about.. I'd really love someone (or may be me) to develop an user friendly iPhone App for HUKD! I'm currently doing my masters project on a iPhone App (learning process)... may be I might work on one later.

Any takers?

Easier said than done. Programming for the iPhone is a very niche area, as well as requiring:

- ]An intel based MAC
- $99 initial investment before you even get a chance to develop

Hang on where's my checklist:
1) Intel mac - check
2) $99 invoice from Apple - check
3) Books on Objective-C and Touch-Cocoa - check.....

Yep niche but do-able and a lot of fun....

Think i'll be joining in for this one...a nice little app for the iPhone has been on the cards for a while now.

HUKD - you'll have to amend the terms of service to allow this then :)

Better check nobody's got there first or see if you have competition. Good prizes to be had.

Ah yes...I see your app there. Not far from what I had in mind. I was thinking of something along the lines of the weather/stocks app myself. I quite like the simplicity of it just doing 1 thing. Showing the top 20/40 or whatever deals and hitting a link to go to safari and open the deal itself within Safari.

I have a number of other apps like this, and (personal preference here) these tend to be the apps I use the most.l

Might have to have a go at this, but whats with the prize being what your developing for?

Going to see what each company offers for developing stuff, dont want to pay for licences like with iphone dev though. Shame theres no winmo option...

Can we enter multiple apps, ie one per platform?

Yeah I thought start simple and see what kind of feedback I get. If people want different features, searches etc, they can get in touch. Then I'm sure the feature set could grow. You have do that trade off of apps with lots of bells and whistle which takes you ages to develop or something that is fit for purpose and can be tweaked over time.

i have an app ready cept for the styling and can't work it out, i have worked out styling xml when its in an xml file but can't find any info any on doing it when its an externally called file :|

anyone have any ideas?

I've noticed that you can search by tags, but the tags aren't returned as part of the output (unless I've missed something).

Any chance this could be implented? Knowing what tags are associated with an item could open up a whole load of possibilities.

I've also noticed that expired items in the API seems to have different behaviour depending on whether you use the xml of json output.

For an expired item (I'm using this link as an example) ... if you get output via xml, then the title and description are the correct strings. If you get output via json, then the title and description are 'null'.

My preference is json for mobile based apps, but this difference is going to cause problems. Any chance of a fix?

I've submitted an App on the Widget page but the link to widget has been truncated and so doesn't open the page correctly. Can I update this or can a mod fix it?

Yeah thats quite an importaint thing as if these are on mobile devices needs linking to the mobile links.

I'm not too clued up other than the very, very basics of php, i.e. hello world (!) but wanting to give this a shot. Can multiple merchants be called and how would this be done, would they be inserted into the url making the call eg

http://api.hotukdeals.com/rest_api/v1/?key=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx&merchant=PC-World and Dixons and Currys and ???

or would there have to be some function or multiple calls and then grouping the results into one output behind the scenes?

You can only get one merchant at a time, so your application would have to make multiple requests, one for each merchant that you want.

Yes, you can enter as many apps as you want for any of the platforms.

That is a pretty good point, stay tuned for an update that will include the tags as part of the output.
