HUKD - API Feedback

juliet_bravojuliet_bravo[admin]

With so many new ways of accessing data, we've introduced the new Hotukdeals API.

Please post any feedback, relevant comments, issues, developmental ideas and suggestions for improvement within this thread so they can be addressed and we can hopefully work together in making this thing a success.

Thanks everyone, and we hope you enjoy making use of the new tools and data.

hi all, just a note that the issue with mobile links not working is now fixed :)

URGENT: There is a serious bug that has developed recently with pagination. If you put a page number greater than two it will continue to display the same result set as page 2.

I have confirmed this by going to the developer API documentation page (http://www.hotukdeals.com/rest-api/docs) and using the Hottest deals widget on the right hand side of the page. If you append &page=2 to the text box and click update it displays the second result set fine. If you change it to &page=3 (or any other number greater than 2) it still shows the same results.

We're looking into this, thank you.

    Cool, thank you very much.

Is there any chance larger images will be added to the API? Currently dimensions seem to be capped at 150px. I am thinking of making a tablet application, but the small images are a problem.

Hey bencallis, thanks for your interest! And to answer your question: We do have something coming down the pipe that will support higher-res images, however we don't have a firm release date for you on that. Keep your eyes open! :)

Hi, not sure if this has been answered already but what happens if you exceed your 50k call limit in a month? I'm guessing the API is no longer usable until the month resets but as this is obviously bad for users is there a way to solve this? Does hot UK deals reconsider your API key if you near your call limit and extend the amount of usage you have?

Also what exactly are the rules for paid apps on mobile devices, the terms of service seems to imply you cant use the API with a commercial product but I've seen both iPhone and android apps that are paid for/ ad supported. Does this mean I would be allowed to offer a free ad version and paid ad removal as well?

Would be great if someone could offer some advice on this, I wouldn't like to find my app randomly stops working one day hehe (though I'd be over the moon if I had enough users for that).

    Thanks again.

Our API call limit is in intended to prevent abuse of the API, in the cases when someone is about to go over the 50k call limit we increase the limit on a case by case basis, we do monitor limits though and will know when someone is about to go over.

Re "commercial use" of the API, please contact us here:

I am looking at creating an App that would be completely free with no ads (just as a project). Would this be classed as commercial usage still?

    Cheers

I have found a bit issue with api_item tags. The first occurence makes sense which is start of an item within deals but the second occurence of this same api_item tags under tags invalidate the xml schema conformance. I my opinion the tags does not need api_item tag and should be OK with the name tags only.

I agree with you, however we cannot change it without breaking everything that is using it :). Thanks for your report!

I've read the docs, but there doesn't appear to be a way to retreive the current TEMPERATURE of each deal?
    HeroDeveloper
If you have an API key you can test the data that the API actually gets back by pasting the request URL into your browser. There is a "temperature" node.

Ah cool, i thought the example was complete. Any chance we can get an XSD file for the schema?
    HeroDeveloper
I'll forward your request on, but it is unlikely.

Really? How is the web service being run? Surely they must be using something like JAXB to XML serialization/deserialization? or some sort of XML validation?

Does the API provide a direct link to the deal website? (through a HUKD url so HUKDs get their affiliate cash of course!)

The only link I seem to see is a direct link to the deal page here on HUKDs. Kind of pointless if an app has to link to HUKD instead of the actual deal.

One other question is it 5k or 50k limit per month? I'd like to do some very simple analytics on this and create an app for it, but need to get the deals every say 1-5 mins.

No direct link to the deal is provided by the API. However it is possible to extract the direct link and maintain HUKD's affiliate link from the mobile deal page on the HUKD. That way the user gets a direct link and HUKD still make their cash.

Not pretty but it works well enough in my app.
