jogu - That last thing you said is exactly what we're putting in place. Only deals over temperature x will appear on the front page list. This should be done today or tomorrow.

RSS and email alerts will have to wait until the end of the week.

Cool, looking forward to at least that bit then :-D

You can get a RSS feed of the forum currently here:

Personally I think email alerts are annoying :)

No that one is dead right now hotdealseeker. You can use the forum one short term but we are going to have a new one soon that you can customise.

The email alerts are the best bits admin :-)

Otherwise I miss out on deals when I'm at work / distracted with other things. Admittedly, most of the time I only look at the subject line and mostly delete them, but there's alway use to be a couple of at least vaguely interesting things every day :)

Whilst we're on the email alerts subject, the emails when a new article gets posted to a thread you're subscribed to don't seem to work either, is that a known fault?
#8
The email alerts need to be turned on on the user cp, at the top left of your page. Scroll down a bit and you should see the alert preferences for subscribed threads. The default on this is set to no email I believe. :)

The featue that was most useful for me was the "View all posts since last visit". I had this bookmarked, so i just had to visit that link and I could see everything that had gone on since I was last here. The "View Today's Posts' option just isn't the same :(

Front page is now filtering on a temp threshold and paging.

I will play with the temp rating over the next few days (and onwards) to keep it at a reasonable level.

Please please please bring back email alerts the way they were before.

I have my gmail set up with a 'filter' that automatically brought the alerts in past my inbox and grouped them together in a little folder.

I am still undecided about the new format tbh. I think I will miss alot more great deals than I did before.
#12
I like the improvements, much better format
[admin]#13
Thanks Bairn_O_Falkirk :)

Just curious jogu how you're liking the front page now that it has a threshold implemented?

Much better now Admin thanks :)

I'm not sure I understand how the 'expired' thing works though. The '30 GB ipod' from the link was showing up even when I only searched for 'active' deals. I even clicked on the 'expired' button, but it still shows up...

Hopefully I'll get email notifications again now too, thanks Emma :)
#15
It takes a few members to lcick "expired" before it marks as expired. This is just to make sure that some clown doesn't turn up and marking everything as expired, lol. Same with the SPAM.

If something is expired and isn't moving off the FrontPage because people aren't marking it then just post in the forum thread/comments for that deal that it's expired and a member of staff will hopefully pick that up and force-mark it as expired.

With the old Front Page expired deals were never deleted, so that's quite a step forward under this new system... we can actually mark things as expired. :)
#16
As duckmagicuk2 says, it can forced off the front page by Admin or moderators, which helps a great deal, especially with expired vouchers :)
[admin]#17
RSS feeds and email alerts are back and better than ever ;)
#18
thanks admin :)

I'm not sure I understand how the new options work:

what's the difference between "Alert me on all deals" and "Email me the deal alerts"?

does the 'minimum temperature' that says it for RSS affect what deals emails are sent for too?
[admin]#19
Well if you want all deals posted to have an email notification to you then check off "Alert me on all deals" and also "Email me the deal alerts". The "Alert me on all deals" sets your prefs to that (for either RSS or email but there's not much point for RSS as there is already a default feed which does this), and the "Email blah blah" does just what it says, it emails you alerts for whatever your prefs are.

Minimum temp does not work fro email alerts as email alerts are sent out as soon as a deal is posted and at that point it's temp will be 0 degrees.

To be honest me and a few friends who i directed to this site didnt really like the new set up , but im sure some do perfer this new site.... but i bet to new people to this site may find it confusing.

I find myself looking more to MSE now then this site when this was the emain one i would check out.

As i speak i cant even submit a deal i found as it keeps going on to some sort of error page.

I did perfer the look of the old site , alot more user friendly and much more easy to look at ... just trying to be honest as i thought i would get use to this new site but as yet no :(

Thanks for the feedback A-n-d-y

Unfortunately there is an error when trying to post deals at the moment, so please bear with us.

Is it just the look of the old forum you miss? The way deals are posted in the new software, enables each and every member to put their deal on the front page. It should be easier to use, as it lets you know where to put a web address for images and the page. Start dates and expiry dates, tags too.

This softwere [when working properly], is much faster.

Please continue to post feedback, positive or negative, as it's obviously helpful.

I've given up trying to figure out the email deal alerts thing. I thought I had it switched on, but I've not had a single email since switching it on over a week ago.

All I want is an email when a 'hot' deal is created (ie. as soon as the temperature reaches the level where it would be displayed on the front page).

I know people seem to be going towards RSS, but that just doesn't work for me. I use 4 of more PCs in the course of a single day, and the only thing common between them is I can always connect back and get my home email.

Maybe I'll try this MSE thing that was mentioned.

(I am really trying not to be negative, but my patience for fiddling with sparsely documented settings is fairly limited.)

Hi jogu,

You should receive email alerts as long as you checked off the Email me alerts checkbox. If you want to set a temp level then you should use RSS. If you want to use a web based solution take a look at bloglines or Google Reader. You could also try this: http://www.rssfwd.com/ that is supposed to turn an RSS feed into emails.

A-n-d-y thanks for the feedback also. Is there anything specific we could do? It's hard to do anything constructive on our end if the things you need/want are not specific. Is there a feature you found useful? the way things were laid out? Why? How did it work differently? How did you use it differently? Saying I liked the old look doesn't help me, I need to know the why, like I can't see xx at a glance now, the text is too big for a 800x500 resolution, things like that. If I have something concrete then it is something I can look at and we can work on.

The email alerts checkbox is the only one I have ticked, and I get nothing :-(
[admin]#25
You need to check off "Alert me on all deals" also and then it will send you email alerts for everything. If you only want specific merchants, categories etc. then select those below instead.
#26
I just like how the old homepage looked before , how they were laid out etc

You could see at least 3 -4+ deals at a time ,seems the deals what are posted on main page are quite big on my screen? i just found the old style more pleasing to the eye.

Some members post lots of info along with deals and when it moves to FP, it may look bit sluggish. Post are tidied up asap.

The new home page is a lot more fair, a lot more interactive and a lot more detailed.

Now you get to choose what ends up there instead of us, which is working great.

I think the deals should have more room now. Before hand there weren't only links on the left but there were links on the right too and the deals just had a strip down the right. It's a lot more simply and clear now IMO, but I might be wrong.

Also, you've got the oppertunity to view more pages of the front page deals, whereas the old page used to move very fast and dropped off the front page within a day or two meaning that a lot of people were missing things.
