Sorry, I meant to put this in the feedback section.

Moved to Feedback

If people are incorrectly spamming threads they will be found out and if necessary punished for doing so. The spam feature is essential to help keep the boards free of self-promotion, advertising and pornography etc - to raise the number of spam votes needed would be very risky (as people often click expired instead by mistake/not knowing that this removes the option to spam)...

A thread that gets mad hype AKA a thread posted by The JFK.
#7
As said, simply let the mods know.

There have been many threads in Feedback that have dealt with this exact same matter.

Spamming threads maliciously is dealt with seriously.

If people used the search functions before putting posts on others wouldnt need to press the span button so much to get rid of the duplicates that are taking this site over ........

Ive pressed it 6 times tonight alone for example for duplicate posts.......

Ive seen a lot of op's (not this op) post again asking where their posts have gone and the original has been a duplicate.....

Ive suggested to the mod's that they should come up with some system that makes people search before posting and messages original poster's to tell them about the spamming reason as it does make you put a reason in so shouldnt be too difficult and would sort the issue i think......

If you've ever been on at 3am JFK (past your bed time) porn postings can become quite a problem. It needs to stay the way it is for the safety of the impressionable minds like yourself.

Btw you should refer to my thread praising the spam feature.

How would you work out the pleasure/pain ratio on that electriclinux? Is there some sort of formula?

There is but I am pushing the line already :)

So we are all in agreement that that amount of 'spams' needed to spam a thread should be increased?

Yeah?

Yeah?

Oh dear, what have you become!?
[admin]#24
We can adjust it. It's a question of balance between spamming too quick and not being able to spam it quick enough.

I think a lot of this problem would go away if we could sort out the issue of the duplicates to stop them being placed in the first instance.

Ive seen a lot of people query where their post has gone and its been a duplicate which they just havent bothered to check for before posting........

I must mark at least 4 "deals" a day as spam due to them being duplicates and thats without even looking for them so their must be many many more duplicates around.

I recall you mention previously there were plans to do something about the duplicates, has anything moved on with this?

Based on another thread about the supermarket deals may it be an idea to have a button along the top in the "forums" beside deals, vouchers, freebies etc etc for groceries rather than it being a filter on the actual deal section via topics? This could mean people could find decent non supermarket deals easier as the grocery deals are taking over this site making it more and more difficult to find decent deals as they get pushed down the "deal" page so so quickly.

Im sure you have noticed that most of the duplicates come from supermarket deals, two birds with one stone and all that??

Just a couple of thoughts

I think it should be increased.

If someone posted something 'out of order' eg porn it would only take a few more seconds for the thread to be spammed as 90% of people that see it will spam it.

Thanks for the reply though, it's good to see that you actually take peoples opinions on board.

If only it worked that way. 66% will spam it, 33% will expire it. If it takes more members to spam, it will be expired and people then won't be able to spam it.

Then increase the amount of people that are needed to expire a thread aswell. Simple.

You say simple, I say counterproductive...

Yep we're half-way there. We are working on search first. So on that front we are working with Sphinx which is an open source solution that sits on top of the database to power search. It should let us play much more with variables to increase the relevancy of results.

Anyway once that's ready we'll work on the new deal submit. I'd say hopefully in February with the new search backend and then March for deal submit that will do an url check to reduce dupes (same url).
