I can swing a deal by 12 degrees - hot or cold. I do feel that the temp should be raised by a bit, maybe say 40 degrees - that way we can be sure that it is a "good" deal. Perhaps Paul has this as one of the HUKD-V2 upgrades?

with all the talk of global warming ...best to turn things down a bit to save the planethttp://www.elferteam.de/Forums/Smilies/cold.gif

I increased the required temp for the front page - let's see how it looks over the next while.

Looks better already IMO!

Good move :)

Nice quick action
#8
What is it now?
#9
Looks like 40+
#10
40 degrees ?
[admin]#11
60 degrees voted temp - that can go up or down depending on responses etc
#12
Good move imho, the front page was becoming a bit pointless as all sorts would end up on there and I found myself having to dig through it (that's what the forum is for, digging through, not the main page imho).
#13
I agree, much better so far :)
#14
I agree too, thanks for bringing it up Bristoldeal.
#15
Better now I feel
#16
Much better, there was too much crap getting through to the front page. Hope it doesn't make the front page a bit stagnant though - deals won't be added as regularly, guess we'll have to wait and see.

This has probably been asked before but I couldn't find it mentioned in the stickies (there is a bit about temperature but it didn't answer my question).

If someone views a deal but does not vote hot or cold does this automatically lower the temp by -0.2?

You might think its an odd thing to ask but I seen deals which have been viewed by 160 people but have a temp of -32 and no comments etc. And when I've posted a new deal gone into to view it, come out again and gone back in again its dropped by -0.2 (even though from the views I know I was the only one to view it).

I could just be imagining it but I was just wondering......
[admin]#18
No not at all.

I think what you're seeing is some serial cold voters who think it's funny to vote everything cold in an attempt to get a rise out of people.
[helper]#19
Thanks Admin - how often does the no. of views on the forum screen update? is it instant?
For instance this deal
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76970
has been viewed by 2 people yet the temp is 44c. Now I know that even Dino cannot raise a deal by that much!!
Or is it just my Tiscali broadband that isn't refreshing properly?
[admin]#20
Yeah the view numbers are cached and update every 1/2 hour I think (or maybe hour).
[helper]#21
Thats great and answers my question - I'll go away and try and discover another conspiracy theory......

Thanks for responding
[admin]#22
No problem - that's what this section is for.

That's a good post you linked to, I'm gonna check it out.
Anyway, I can only change a temp by 12, just like you I suspect. I can 'expire' a deal but I can't 'spam' a deal on my own.

Also, you can vote on a deal withcout actually opening it using the filters. The views, I presume, only mean the forum thread and those who open it via RSS or click on the deal title on the front page.

Am I right there, Admin?
#25
if u vote hot/cold from front page that wouldn't count as a thread view would it? therefore page count wouldnt alter
#26
Just realised that 1 of my deals has gone through to the front page at 40 degrees, was the higher temp needed idea abandoned then?
#27
40 degrees is the threshold, that's roughly what admin changed it to.

I agree too, thanks for bringing it up Bristoldeal.

I see, thanks Emma. I got my wires crossed somewhere and thought 40 degrees was the old threshold and it had been raised from that.
#29
I think 20 was the old one.

This is what Admin posted on first page:
Admin
60 degrees voted temp - that can go up or down depending on responses etc

Don't know if seems lower again now though.
#31
This is hard to explain - there are two different temps there. The 40 would be what you see - but when admin referred to the 60, it refers to a slightly different temp, one we would see behind the scenes - which uses members vote power & rep etc.

Admin - please correct me if I am wrong there.
#32
I understand what you're saying Emma, just gets confusing when someone quotes a temp and you don't know if it's the temp we see on the deal or the behind the scenes one ;-)

At the end of the day, as long as deals don't make it onto the front page too easily, then I guess it doesn't really matter.

It doesnt really make sense that some can push the heat up if they have a bigger rep, why cant it be judged by how many vote hot/cold rather than who votes hot/cold? I hope that makes sense, well it did to me

I think a lot of it comes down to being long standing members in most cases and more experience maybe. The problem is you have the habitual cold voters who never contribute other than to vote everything cold. :-(
#35
I think its judged mainly on the finder of a deal/how many deals you posted and how hot they were.

My rep is to the max, but my voting power is a couple of degrees.

Eg, if you've posted a hot hot hot deal, your voting power is 'hotter.'

Thats how I portray it.
banned#36
Can't Admin find out who the serial cold voters are and freeze (pun intended!) their voting capabilites? :p
banned#37
i just think it would be easier if all our votes where counted the same, no matter what our stance is in HUKD  I mean i have rep and only posted two deal that went down like a lead balloon, so rep really doesnt stand for much
#38
maybe all our votes shud count the same like 2 degrees each for hot.
ill only vote on a deal if i think its really hot, i can give 12degrees, and i dont vote that often

I think one problem with that is people can create multiple accounts to vote their deal Hot. (not that they should have multiple accounts, but they could do it)

New accounts don't have hardly any effect on votes at present.

Do you really think it is that important to people to have a hot post, somethings a bargain to some and not to others, it aint the end of the world if it doesnt get to the front page surely? If that is the case then maybe they should spend time outdoors rather than in here
