any mod care to fill me in?

No, there isn't a set amount before you're banned.

You could be banned for your 1st infraction. Or clock up 50(for example), and still be here.

The mods look at them to see your past record. This would then help make they're decision whether you should be suspended for 1 day, 3 days etc.

Lets say there was a ban at "20" points. You could pick up these points over 4 years for relatively minor rule breaks and find yourself banned forever.

On the flip-side, let's say I was personally attacking a member and received 4 points, and then did the same thing again and again as soon as I returned.
I wouldn't expect to reach 20 points before being banned.

Very broadly it can be said that there are two types of ban. There's the straight technical ban - this could be for a mulitple id or a foreign company spamming the site for example. Other bans, which may be based on past history or a serious rule breach will be decided by a group discussion to ascertain facts & with input from Admin - ie it's never done as an immediate reaction to something. But in these cases, as thesaint as rightly said, the ban would be based on the specific case & the facts related to it.
