The whole idea of a forum is to make posts :?

So are you proposing a change to the dynamics of a forum?

Saint you make some good suggestions and then you make some whine...:) I'll let you guess which this is.

actually the example you link was posted as a deal and almost immediately moved to misc as a "heads up" because it was speculative. Once proof was shown it was moved back to deals so many of the posts now in the thread were made while it was a misc thread.

Help, I need a friend to talk to, am suicidal - rang a HELP LINE in Pakistan and was asked when I was available? Is this right or am I being used to blow things out of all proportion? Please help. Also have a tendency to make very sick jokes, very sorry if you are offended, but you can see, I need help.

Apologising in advance for the sick joke - I am trying to make a point, too many posts saying thanks, you are great, what a good find - people, now a good rep added is ENOUGH.
Sorry again

and the OP's solution is.........................................
[helper]#8
I thought threads created to attack another member (bob2009) were not allowed.......

Solution is to provide a search function "within a thread" but to ban chats within threads is silly (as they can be very informative)
[admin]#9
I think part of the solution is to use the edit feature more often so that if something really important is said in a post it can be added to the op.

I know when it was posted back to "Deals", as I was the one that reported it to be moved back.

When I reported it, my post was number 29, it is now 1500+

I haven't attacked anyone, just gave an example. I have no reason to attack any member, doubly so in Feedback where this thread was submitted

Good call, but is dependant on the OP updating.
[admin]#11
No anyone with enough rep can add to the op.

It looks a real mess when that happens though:

Look at some of the Acer Aspire threads - they are huge. Many, many of the posts aren't about the deal but about members helping others with upgrading or installing xp. In other words many of the posts are tremendously useful even though they are not about the deal.

It would be impossible to regulate this unless you have a spam individual post option which members could click on....but as spamming threads already cause soo much problem already this probably isn't workable.

I'd like to move to more of a collaborative first post which would help solve that problem.

But 99% of the time it's people chatting about the deal............you want to put a stop to that?
[admin]#16
No - comments would remain the same as now. I mean that instead of having additional notes to the OP as you can do now that it would be more of a wiki approach where members with enough rep could actually edit the whole text of an OP to add info or edit it.

That'd be handy :) Only problem i'd see is some of the usual suspects who would abuse it. :-(
[admin]#18
Then we need to think of ways to make sure the activities of the usual suspects become more unusual :)
[mod]#19
Could it be limited to certain people who are actively consistent in deals? In a kind of way to the start ASB and Andy made as helpers.

Not meaning as in having a particular title or a job but having a group of trusted members who could change the OP to something more appropiate if they came across it.

Thanks Admin.
Glad yet another one of my threads in Feedback may lead to the site working a little better. :)

I don't mind the "banter" as such, but when members join it late, they have no idea where to start looking. The thread I used as an example had many members asking the same thing over and over again.

The ability to make the OP concise is a good way of letting the chatter continue, but for the ones who want to nip in and see what the main points are before purchasing, can also do so.

Some threads need a bit of pre-planning, and at the moment, if that isn't done, there is no way to rectify it.

Surely if you ask a question which has already been answered you could be done for spamming in the truest sense of the word? I would be in favour of that being enforced

Also if search was improved to search an entire thread for a specific word or phrase this would help to reduce clutter because people could search instead of asking the same things over and over again.
