Hi can you use the report button (red triangle) on the post if you feel unhappy about it and a mod will take the appropriate action. Thanks.

it was obviously a joke. you dont seriously think they bought £25,000 worth lol
#3
Why not? If someone sees a bit of profit in it, and there's 50 available, why not go for it if you have the money? Could be a nice little earner, but is of course against the spirit of the site.

Just ignore them and move on. They are just trolls and / or think they are amusing. Dont take the bait.

Its a comment meant solely to antagonise and wind people up, seems to happen all the time now and to make matters worse it sometimes falsely gives the impression a deal exists (when it doesn't). I can't see how it isn't trolling which apparently is against the rules, although never really seems to be acted upon...

waste of time reporting too as the reports are just ignored. Would love to see a mod explain how it isn't trolling?
#7
Just as a bit of a disclaimer I posted this half asleep at about 6:30 this morning and don't really care about it that much, but I do just find it a really pointless and stupid thing to post.

It's not funny in the slightest (or have I just had an epic sense of humour fail? :D) and is likely to annoy people when/if the item goes out of stock, regardless of whether they were 'joking' or not.

It could be interpreted/argued otherwise e.g. backing up a super hot deal (if this is indeed the case) - however I personally wouldn't subscribe to this point of view.

Not really, I'd agree that this is a wind up and inciting a negative response. The only benefit I see is that the thread has been bumped, so that members viewing deals (sorted by discussed) may have seen it promoted to the top of the listings.

I agree, not funny at all and may encourage others to flame, perhaps incurring an infraction by their inability to control any outrage. My view is that it's a sad reflection on the member posting and not in the spirit of hukd.

so why are reports never acted on then? And I know sometimes things are done behind the scenes, but as posts aren't removed, and the same member(s) do it time and time again, I think its a fair assumption nothing is done.

Surely if you infract someone for biting then you should infract the person who started it all?

I don't know about other threads but I noticed a 'bought 50 to sell on ebay' post was removed from a thread today.

no other reason to post what he did apart from to troll

At least the user did get an infraction for it although I agree the posts should be removed as well in that case.

he didn't

I know the poster was only joking, but he's been round long enough to know what would happen when he posted it - as asb said not funny at all and may encourage others to flame, perhaps incurring an infraction by their inability to control any outrage.

Yep, you're right - I guess they've left the responses as the thread is in misc now rather than deals, hopefully similar types of responses will be removed from deal threads.

LOOOOL

And there's the rub. Its obvious it was in jest, just the same as someone suggesting they'd spent £25,000 on camcorders.

Hell.... I just realised.... I probably am in the dog poo. I bought 40 storage boxes from Wilkjinsons a week ago! Oh noes!

yeah obvious to regulars, obviously not to everyone :)

That probably wasn't the best thread to highlight tbh but was the most recent that I had read, and couldn't be bothered to search for others

I love how some people are making assumptions like "it was done to incite/troll" etc. when that is simply not the case. I made the post as a joke and because of it being a high priced item I figured no one would seriously believe I spent £25000 on a single deal. Originally I was going to post 10 but that's closer to being believable so I upped it before clicking post. I guess I'd have to state I bought a million before people wouldn't interpret it any different than a joke? I obviously underestimated some people's sense of humour.

Secondly, I see these posts all the time, on deals that are low priced, in very high demand and are much more believable, yet nothing is ever done about them. Thus I didn't know there were any rules against making such posts, especially when it was blatantly obvious it was a joke.

It's ridiculous that we even have this thread when so many similar posts are made every day that are more believable. I'll be sure to report everything I see like that in future and not make a similar post again.
#18
Or overestimated your own sense of humour, given the annoyance with that type of comment in general I don't think it was at all funny nor did it add anything to the thread - at least people refrained from replying to it bar one. It's good to see action taken by ASB.

People who find obvious jokes annoying really need to lighten up more. I can understand annoyance in a case where it's potentially a realistic option rather than a joke, but this one? Why not ones where supermarket deals are posted, with limited stock, heat in the thousands, people rushing to buy them and people stating they bought a dozen or so for eBay? IE. ones that are believable. Why does my post get all the attention? The amusing part is that the best joke to come out of the whole issue is this thread.

I support action being taken in such cases as long as it remains consistent and every post that's not on topic is moderated, but I suspect this won't be the case. Slapping a warning on me isn't going to achieve anything, the way to go about it is to make the rules clearer to prevent people from doing it in the first place as I had no idea such rules exist. In fact I can't even find a copy of the rules; most people use this website as a listing of deals rather than a proper forum.

can you just explain whats funny about it?
I mean, I hardly think a comedian standing on stage saying 'I bought 50 for ebay' will get much of a laugh, so what is it thats funny?

He was using satire.

Whilst it may not have been the funniest joke ever written down on HUKD, it certainly isnt the worst.

Mountain and Molehill springs to mind here.

I know he wasn't being serious, and until he replied I had specifically not mentioned that thread as it was really obvious he was lying (well to most people!). However you must agree that the comment always causes friction in the threads, and sometimes isn't obvious, which just causes people to bite. There was a thread about mascara recently where someone had said she bought 21 for friends and family and she got slated to death for it - imagine the reaction if she had said for ebay!

As for being funny/not funny - yeah the first time it was done it was probably quite amusing, now it happens every day, funny not

But like I said.... its not a hanging offence. I think that's the point I'm trying to make. Thing is, if he really had bought 50 to sell on ebay.... so what? He wouldn't be the first and wont be the last.

Of course its not a hanging offence, neither is bumping a FS thread 4 times or advertising something on misc, messaging people to vote your KFC deal hot/cold etc. But given that, and the fact he won't be the first or the last, doesn't make it an okay or worthwhile post - and (particular in the example of the laptop) the initial post falsely suggests to others that the deal is available. Okay saying 'I bought 50 camcorders' is clearly nonsense, but saying 'I just got back from Tesco's with 5 and I'm putting them on ebay' is less-obviously nonsense - and might have encouraged people to go out and find a deal that didn't exist. End of the day its a comment that achieves nothing but antagonism, and that should be avoided.
#23
I agree with your sentiment and most of what you say guv, although I did think the example where the guy was lying about buying a deal (whilst it was still posted in deals) goes beyond a joke/acceptable. You're absolutely correct about posts in misc, but when it strays over to the deals forum (which is of course the bread+butter of the site) things should perhaps be taken a bit more seriously, and bullcrap accomodated a little less. Remember 90% of the visitors to this site come here to browse deals, and less than 1% come to post crap in misc, and the site lives or dies on the quality and accuracy of what appears in deals.

So why does my post get a massive thread in the feedback forum while the other kind you mentioned don't? Surely if someone wants to make a point that these kind of posts are bad they should use an example that's more realistic.

Yeh, I know what you mean. Still not sure what you are getting at with buying a deal? Are you saying deals posted that dont exist? If so, yes I agree. On saying that, I also think Post your receipt or your lying" is equally unnaceptable.

agreed, however look at the links I posted, he was lying - and from subsequent posts was only doing so to get others to bite. Thats clearly trolling and against forum rules just as much as bumping a fs thread 4 times is.

FWIW I don't see the problem with someone buying 50 to buy on ebay or for any other reason, I think the girl who said she bought 21 mascara's for family was particulary harshly treated by other members, but as usual all the comments remain.

Same sort of thing happened on a thread id been on and the user said something daft and i called him a dick head and i got suspended even though the post was clearly meant to incite, This site tends to punish the regular members when they say stuff but if you have less than 100 posts you can pretty much say what ever you like to who ever you like.
