And I was just about to change mine to...................

Here am I sitting at my computer typing countless words on HUKD forum when some guy suggested that the location details ought not be so long but kept extremely short. My computer is situated in my study in the Northwest of England where it does not get too much sun on a winters day, nevertheless it cannot be as bad as others in much duller climes. The Irish sea is not far away from where I am sitting, and in fact I can see it out of my attic window.

I will try to cut this down to size to please you :)

sez the noob who hasnt even bothered to fill their location in :whistling:

Hey ! easy on Mo because they do have half a point really.

Might have been better Mo to ask whether it would be possible to restrict the length of the frame (is that the right terminology?) on the left hand side.

Unless I am missing something members are not aware whether their location will "break" the thread or not ?

I would say it's an oversight ?? and members are in fact innocent !!

But it doesnt "break the thread". Mine looks fine regardless of length of location. Maybe the OP doesnt know how to resize windows.............

or is still using IE :whistling:

Its probably best to state what browsers you are using if its breaking the page formatting - and give a screen shot if possible - they text is meant to wrap and not alter the width of the box...

Simple fact is if the swear filter allows us to swear using spaces in our words is it alright to do so? no so the same should apply to things like Avatars/Signatures.

I'm using firefox 2.0.0.16

Apologies if I seemed ****** off it was late at night when i posted and was feeling alittle grumpy

Can you get a screenshot of where it happens? I'm on FF3 and it seems fine (probably worth updating if you get the chance ). Is it all long locations (eg does mine cause a problem) or just really really long ones? It does make sense to me to limit it to about 40 or 50 characters max...

I use FF3 and it wraps text fine. Never get a horizontal scroll bar appearing. Extreme example in my pic but proves point.

Is it specifically when there is a really long single, unspaced word (such as in an url) that causes the problem then?

Ok here's a couple of screenshots which shows it "breaks" the thread with continuous text.
I haven't worked out what the cutoff is.

Windows xp sp3 ie7

Just switch to firefox3 and you'll never look back. IE7 is just so yesterday.

Compare your very basic IE7 browser to my FF3 browser to see so many extra features:-

With respect that lot would give me instant migraine. I'd prefer IE7 to work correctly.
#26
Very valid point, should be easy enough to put a cap on the number of characters for the location field to prevent people using it for anything else.

Believe me, you soon get used to it. Everything I use regularly is just one click away.

True but it seems the problem is not with the overall length but the number of continuous characters - unfortunately as URLs don't have spaces between words they seem to cause a problem with wrapping on certain browsers...

True although until we have sentient synthetic members on the forum, URLs shouldn't be there.
