Admins thread link - http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/242324/a-note-on-self-promotion-online-or-/

Thread in question - http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=263361 where the OP has internal memo and admits to working there.
#2
perhaps the OP notified admin about his intention to post?

Its also a genuinely good deal, so maybe admin decided to leave it up.

While the clarification thread was good, the self promotion thing looks to still be pretty open to interpretation
[admin]#3
I think we have gone through this specific kind of issue several times and ruled either way. I think the more useful way to look at it sometimes is in terms of whether the person benefits from posting rather than just 'do they work for them'.
[mod]#4
But i read this and assumed this is why it was a no-no

Admin
We don't allow people to promote themselves or the companies they work for

This is one area I will not compromise on this site. If you want to read what a store thinks is a good deal go open up the Sun.

This is why i ask for clarity. Hardly anyone would benefit from listing what there store has to offer but it hasn't stopped them being pulled in the past.

In my case it actually makes it worse for me...more orders means more analysis...therefore more work...therfore less time for me to spend on HUKD....

Benefit? I wish!....only perk I get here is free Gym access and free tea & coffee....

Remember the Morrisons £15 games deal was posted about a week before it was due to start - by a Morrisons manager.

Should he be banned? Should he have not posted?

I for one am glad he did.

I suspect there isn't a need for a hard and fast rule here. If its of great benefit to the HUKD userbase, then it should stand.

If a Dixons rep crops up with 10% off inflated prices, then ban his ass. Not rocket science

From what I remember his deal was pulled after been there for over a week, he was then informed he could no longer post deals for Morrisons without permission! Although after many members kicked up a stink the deal was replaced.

What's even funnier is the thread i questioned is a dupe as well it appears. Posted 2 days ago by another user http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/262491/xbox-360-60gb-asda-instore-only-167/
#10
Well, the one posted by the Asda employee has been removed so now it's only ^^^^ that one left.

It's a shame because there was some useful information, for new comers to the 360 at least, in the thread that was removed :-(
#11
It’s a joke that this thread has been removed on a technicality. At the end of the day this guy is a shop assistant, how he going to benefit? He first tried to remove it by saying it was a dupe then when it was made clear it was actually a different deal that was not valid at the time of posting AND and had been amended he comes up with this.

You should be encouraging people like this to post deals early before they sell out of stock. There was a huge amount of useful information in that thread regarding availability, console versions etc. At the end of the day there is an £80 saving here at retail it was the second most popular deal on the site when it was removed.

What are you actually trying to achieve here by removing this apart from annoying your users ?

Looking from the outside it just looks like Syzable has an attitude problem to be perfectly honest. He wanted it to be removed so it was. Using the spirit of the law to destroy the law. Well played you can be happy with your work here today.
#12
I was just about to post about the Asda deal as well I saw it earlier and am very interested in getting one, is the deal still on?
#13
The poster of the first deal has confirmed on the original thread it was not accurate and subsequently updated to included the free games (main benefit of this deal)

So basically this has been removed because a member of staff at Asda posted a very hot deal before it went live on this forum first.

We still haven’t had a moderator or anyone else explain why this is a bad thing and the hottest deal on the site has been removed.

Anyone want to man up and explain why this was actually removed or is Hotukdeals Syzables own private fiefdom?
#14
i dont post alot, but i do use the site alot and leave rep and vote.

i had a couple of posts on the other thread asking questions, now i cant see if there was a reply.

i find it incredible that the other post was removed, hottest post of the month?

1st eBay, then Betfair and now HUKD?

:?
#15
The worst thing about this is the lack of comment from a moderator or someone in a position to act on why this has happened. It just adds to the bad taste in the mouth and the belief that one person with no regard for the good of the community can effectively kill the highest rated deal on the site without any explanation. Really something has gone badly wrong.

But we are wasting our breathe. This deals over in a day or so the impact and benefit has well and truly been lost.

At least the person that is responsible for this could explain themselves or a moderator but I guess that is too much to expect?

If you read through what Syzable was saying, he's correct in that admin made a rule that if you work for the company then you can not promote the company offers without first putting a request through to admin or the mods, just so they can double check the offer so there's no self promo.

As other people's deals were removed because of this rule, Sy was simply asking why the rule was followed for some and not others, as it's unfair on those that take the time to post their deals and have them removed because of this rule, whilst others are left on. As he originally mentioned, this is in no way a personal attack on the original poster or the deal, it's just asking for some consistancy in admins rules.
banned#17
for god sake never seen so much hot air from other posters in my life.. the 360 post was a duplicate, easy answer would be to merge them .. job done, as for Sy pointing out a dupe, and the flack he has got from some quarters , I am glad he is about as he has sniffed out some rogues in his time, and is a font of knowledge in some areas, the new johnny come latelys dont seem to post much but to moan at others. Its down to the mods and their word is final, as I have always maintained, its their house so live by their rules .. the door is that way ..........................> Happy Christmas:santa:

Thank you. :) That is exactly the case i raised.

Alera - I understand you are dissapointed that the info within the thread has been removed. It would be good if the relevant info was returned into the Misc category so people don't miss out on the info on what drives can be soft modded etc. No one should miss out on the deal as their is still a thread in Deals regarding the ASDA offer.

I can assure you that Admin or the Mods don't follow my orders on the site and nor do i make any. I just like an even playing field for all members and that to me is more important to the community that everyone is treated equally. I simply pointed out the incosistency and it was then upto others to judge and Admin/Mods to decide what to do.

If you have a particular grievance with me then feel free to discuss it with me by PM. :)

Have you reported it?

There's no need to put them in Feedback really, unless you have a particular concern.

I just want to know what the ruling is one way or other? I have a feeling that it could be something of a grey area that's open to interpretation....

Is this instance though it's exactly the same as the Morrison's post in that the OP works for the chain in question - Though admittadly they may have gone about it a little differently?

I don't think that there is a black and white answer.

There was, but it was muddied with the pulling, and reinstating of that Morrison's thread a few weeks ago.

Just report, and let the mods do their work. If it contravenes Admins guidelines, it will be pulled. If it stays, then I guess it's okay.

Reported. Would love to understand how this differs from previous examples.

Having just read a thread (now deleted) where a member asked for a name change and used his website address as his avatar, his reply was "we don`t allow self promotion, you avatar has been removed".
How does he differ from these members?

Or do we not all have to abide by the same rules?

I think that those members only post to answer members concerns, so use it to show that they are in fact genuine representatives.

If they were to be spamming in the word games threads, then I guess that their avvy's would be removed.

Is anyone else confused about this like I am? I really dont unsderstand now with what is and what isnt seen as self promo...

According to Admin's post I can now post Screwfix deals as I dont actually gain anything from them?

not saying I will cause tbh I cant stand the company, but it would be nice to have the ability even if I choose not to use it and I technically work for Wincanton now not Screwfix which is now our client rather than our company due to a TUPE transfer so its slightly different to when I first started on Deals...

Oh and confession time...it was me that reported the Morrison's guy...sorry but it was self promo...maybe not in the new way of doing things but before it was

TBH you couldn't avoid the morrisons thread it was 2000 degrees, the guy did admit to being a Morrisons manager at the outset and (here's my point) if his thread was removed and the Body Shop one allowed to stay because of the way the individuals composed themselves - Body Shop OP may have PM'd a mod first - then fine....

That explains the ruling, contact a mod first, job done. Without that clarification it smacks of double standards and to me it appears that the body shop one is allowed to stay cause no-one gives a fig about body butter...

I see ODB_69 has been suspended for posting a deal at Screwfix..............so is this now the official line on people posting deals for the company they work for??

Just wondered what the difference is compared to this:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294633

http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3724971&postcount=4

Is it dependant on who you are??

Didn't he actually just post a 'heads up' in misc though, not a deal or voucher, the actual voucher was posted by intranix

So if he's been suspended for posting a 'heads up' for the company he works for is this not allowed either?:?

My interpritation is no..... A while back I even consulted a mod before posting about a charity day held by the studio I own, no sitting fee required just come down on the day have some pictures taken, if you like them then you can order prints at a much reduced rate all profits made were being dontated to a national baby charity. I wouldnt have personally benefited from the event as like I said every single penny raised was going to this charity.

that was rejected on the basis of

1 - HUKD does not endorse charity threads, even though I was not asking for sponsorship or anything like that I was giving heads up regarding an event which could have been seen as a hot deal as there was upto 66% off our regular prices.

and

2 - HUKD does not endorse self promotion, when some could argue that I was not promoting my business again I was merely promoting information regarding an event like if anyone was promoting a sale at a high street outlet.

The major argument I had was that John Lewis staff can post deals regarding that store and that DOES directly affect them as each member of staff is a shareholder where profit is directly proportional to bonuses so when deals are posted they somewhere down the line are profiteering for it.

I agree with Sy, further clarification is needed and enforce the same rules upon everyone

Yes but with a site this big clear cut rules are needed..on the strength of this AND another thread (where I stated I would post if I felt the need). However I get suspended...I posted the voucher midday...eorted the actual thread to get it moved to vouchers as I posted in Misc....at 00:22 I get a 3 day suspension from Rayman.

There has to be clear cut rules and I cant believe that Admin decides who can and who cant post purely on who you are...must be something more to it. I messaged Paul on Saturday (after 3 unanswered messages via CONTACT US) and will await his response for the time being but I know of 2 other deals going on right now (1 as posted by Sy) where the person works for the company.

But 100% for sure I would not have posted it if I didnt think it was ok to do so

nope...

I was suspended 1st week or so for posting Screwfix deals....so I cant anymore, if its gonna be this way, then has to apply to everyone to be fair

You posted this in September, so your claim about not knowing is confusing, as you have been suspended before.

It was in this thread and another (which I still cant find but it had loads of posts), Admin made it clear if you dont profit then its ok...

Hence the other deals being allowed to go up

I mean surely this is worse as the person works directly for them?
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294633

In Post 4 they openly admit to working for them. Same with the Micflair/Morrisons thread...and thats worse as he was a manager...managers usually get bonuses...only thing we get is free tea/coffee, gym membership and a card from all the managers at Christmas

We used to get a 'bonus' of a selection box at Christams and an Easter Egg at Easter...they stopped that over a 18 months ago...

I miss my easter egg *sigh*.

thesaint;3771087
Sorry, I thought that you did. I must be getting you mixed up with someone else.

You see I ACTUALLY work for Wincanton...I USED to work for Screwfix, but our site was taken over in a TUPE transfer last year...so I dont answer to Screwfix I only answer to Wincanton, Screwfix are the client...both distribution centres are now run by them as thats what Wincanton do...all staf transferred and the only people on ite who are Screwfix are the IT dept and 2 people in Transport. Its from the Trnsport manager I hear about certain things as anything tht may affect traffic he needs to know about...

So...if you worked for say Cadburys...and you supply to ASDA...then your not allowed to post ASDA deals?

EDIT:

thesaint;3771087
You posted this in September, so your claim about not knowing is confusing, as you have been suspended before.

That was then but a thread or 2 in feedback changed that opinion...

But then again the principal is right...why are others allowed to post and others are not?

In your case, I think that you should have asked 1st before posting, especially since you had been suspended before.

Maybe not fair, but HUKD can be unfair sometimes.
