Would be awkward to define 'major event' - Do we just do English events such as 7/7 and exclude 11/9 as it is hot uk deals? or would we do the anniversary of all major global events.. what about things like bombings in Israel? Would end up doing far too many.
Very multi denominational group as well so no standard as to exactly what should be observed when.
Personally I'd just say that if an individual wants to express their views by a minutes silence.. go for it.. but it's not fair arbitrarily impose on hundreds of users with differing views.

Was thinking about this last night - would it possble to have no posting for 1 min on the entire forum as a mark of respect for major events - eg. 7/7 9/11 etc?

Just a thought :)

TBH I doubt everyone would be aware of this. You may get a new member, blissfully unaware of whats been agreed etc, and they would post.

There isn't really a main page you could use I don't think to advertise this, if it was to happen.
One more thing, I can't see it being noticed really, so you may as well have a minutes silence to yourself.:?

yes i think it would be hard to arrange, let it be a personal thing :)

Oops forgot to submit this before my other post... I agree you wouldn't be able to cater for everyones cause, but there's nothing wrong with dropping a post in the Miscellaneous forum on the day of the one you want to commemorate.

I think there should be one hour's 'mark of respect' for the hammering that the English rugby team got off the Irish tonight :giggle: what was the final score? 143 to nil

Yeah well done to Ireland :) England were very disappointing

Aren't you all (including mods!!!!!0 going a bit off topic? Tut tut :p

Personally though, that 1 minute no posting is a bit extreme. Besides we get people internationally, and with the different time zones etc... Aint gona work.

Nice suggestion though, you are considerate :)

You could also get people who post purposely at that time, and the site could have bad feelings against that person - leading to arguements.

If someone did want to do this however, I would not post - providing I knew about it in advance (I go straight to freebies most days, so wouldnt see a post in another forum until after I had posted)

That's a good point too.

I'd probably be one of them...nothing worse than being guilt tripped into stuff like this, if I want to commemorate something I will do it in my own time and in my own way.

To be honest, i'm sick of this minute's silence (or 2 or 3 as it seems to be getting more often) for trivial things like George Best drinking himself to death. I'm in full support of VE Day, 9/11 and things like that but this country is heading towards a permenant silence to mark peoples hamsters dying or some Z list celebrity blowing their brains out. Thousands of people sadly die every day, we can't comemorate them all.
