I've noticed that this morning too Emma. You have one showing from here right now though.

Mine is still here. :D

Emma - yours is a little cow which seems to be making the "peace" symbol. ;)

I can't see anything at all. On anyone's name. Odd.

Everything's correctly set for your avatar to show up and it seems only you can't see it :?

Try using a different browser to check it out...

I AM GOING MAD!!!!!!!!!!!

This new Dell computer is driving me nuts. I know a bit about computers and I can generally cope with anything they throw at me.....but not this!!!

To start with - it won't show up the avatars on HUKD. I can't get it to install shockwave OR flash to view interactive content on any website. I have no idea what to do! I've trawled the help forums, to no avail. There's a possibility of some sort of conflict from the last Microsoft update and ActiveX but I can't find anything out about that.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Hmm... I know you're not using HP but this MS06-015 patch could be the one causing the problems:

Work backwards through the links. If you have updated with this patch, uninstall it or do a system restore [I expect you've tried that?]
#7
no it's not that patch. I just got the computer a few days ago and these things have not worked at all. i don't wanna do a system restore, cos i've changed so many things - personalising the PC.
#8
So they did work at first?

errrr.I didn't notice... I'm gonna try a system restore and see what happens. Woe is me...
#10
You can always undo a system restore if it still doesn't fix it. :)
#11
Good luck :)

As daft as it sounds your browser is set to display all images? You can see all other web images?

what do you mean?
#14
Can you see the HUKD logo in the top left of the page??
#15
If it's some images or all images this IE info from Microsoft might help:

There are advanced options in IE and I assume FFox where you can just see web pages as text with no images... assuming it was done when we struggled with ropey bandwidth....

i've tried system restore, that didin't work...

the avatars are showing on here now, but I'm still having problems with shockwave and flash player...

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling shockwave?

ayup

i give up for tonight. I'm off to bed. Maybe I'll dream of the answer...
#20
Ugh! Dreaming of microsoft solutions, or should that be nightmares
#21
Oh dear. I'm just gonna reinstall windows and see what happens. I've only had the pc for a few weeks and I'm reinstalling already! :(
#22
There's a back-up service with Dell PC's. You can make one [or two, I can't remember exactly] restoration discs using their pre-installed software. I haven't got a Dell myself, but I'm pretty sure this is possible. So it might be a good idea to do that first?
#23
i tried a Dell System Restore which restores the computer to exactly as it was when it came. And shockwave and flash still aren't working!!! It's that "Xtras" thing again. I really dunno this time, I'm just gonna leave it and hope for the best. .........
#24
I've been doing THIS GOOGLE SEARCH but for most people there isn't much more to it than to uninstall and reinstall shockwave.

:(

which i've done.

and i've googled almost everything to death.

and another thing - now my pop up windows aren't happening here on HUKD when I get a new PM. Anyone else have this - or once again, is it just me and this BLOODY DELL computer!??!
[admin]#26
emma, these all sounds like browser related problems... are you using Internet Explorer? Maybe try switching to Firefox and see what happens.
#27
tried that too. no luck. it's all dell's fault.
[admin]#28
lol :D Bizarre. Sometimes it's the default applications that get installed. Has it installed anything like Norton Internet Security or the like? That would block pop-ups. If it installed anything like that try disabling it.
#29
i've disabled everything that is disable-able (!). i'm giving up. unless someone posts something on here i haven't yet tried....

author edit: By the way, i sent my friend a PM to check if he was getting pop-ups from HUKD PMs, and he's not either - anyone else having that trouble? Ducky - I've PMed you a few times, did you get pop-ups, or just the message change at the top of the screen: "You have 1 new message". ???

Burn your Dell horror machine :P
I told you I would build you one, that was much nicer.

[admin]#31
In all fairness it's pretty certain that this is a software issue not a hardware one. So burn your copy of Windows before you burn your Dell ;)

amazin - i didn't actually do anything, but i just got a pop up for a PM! Good!
#33
but Dell don't support anything like a reliable OS

Viva le penguin!
I'm talking through my red hat - I've never been near a linux machine :P
If you'd like to send me one - I'll be sure to try it out - maybe as the next bingo prize?
