On the subject of swearing and avoiding the swear filter - how about post 43 in this thread (2nd last sentence)
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/218649/join-the-national-trust-for-19ish-f

It must be acceptable now to swear as I've reported this post (twice) and nothing has been done about editing the post (or presumably reminding the poster about forum rules)......

Kinda proves Boydents point about the Mods not taking any action against some members

folks will not use a full swear word say, typing the 1st letter and using the asterisk (*) themselves to filter, thus in effect, avoiding the swear filter. I saw the use of the word bar steward yesterday, that was allowed, why?

Read the op at the start of the thread. Also I believe swear words are substituted with * by the swear filter.

ibiza
However, I do see the thread being used to **** you off!! :-D :-D :-D

Would I be right in saying you or yours work for the National Trust?

I read your report... as I'm sure other mods did too.... there is no swearing in that post. Abuse of the swear filter is a different matter, and obviously not applicable in this case.
[helper]#15
Does that mean I can call someone a *** or an ****?
#16
It's only the same as when they bleep swear words out on tv.

If you called someone that then you may get done for being abusive towards another member.
#17
guv
So using *s to call someome a **** is ok then?

Generally no. I don't think that in the first example that was given someone was called a ****. I think thats how the mods saw it too.

RULES of FORUM
V. Profanities, Foul Language, Rudeness:

There is a word filter in place to help remove profanities from posts.

* Anyone attempting to get round the word filter by any means may face a ban.
* Rude posts or images are also not acceptable and will be deleted without warning at the discretion of Admin and Moderators.
* Please be polite to your fellow members at all times.

So, i ask again, what is attempting to get round the word filter?
Is, typing the 1st, or any letters in the word and self censoring by use of the asterisk an attempt to get around the work filter?
Is Bar Steward acceptable?

And not sure why it has been expired, but i have sent a report against my OP to request it be unexpired

I'd be interested to hear the answer as I generally try & find an alternative to a swear word but leave the meaning in little doubt, but have also on ocassion used a single starting letter & then ***.......
[admin]#20
Well, in this post (which was mentioned earlier) No attempt has been made by Ibiza to substitute letters in the swearword for numbers/symbols etc to trick the filter.
EG- Say the word "Cheese" was in the swear filter. Writing "Cheese" would appear on the forums as "*****". However, if you were to write "Chee5e", it's still clear what it says and the swearword filter won't pick it up.
This is what we define as "Avoiding the filter," Basically substituting part of the word so the swearfilter doesn't blank it.

Yes but still doesnt answer the bar steward quote...

That is a completely seperate thing...its not 'avoiding' the filter at all...as people actualy say that all the time...personally I dont see that as a problem...you hear it all the time and I used to work in pubs and theres always some smart **** that thinks there funny
#23
everyone, well most people on here are mature enough to get there views across without swearing I hope.

*leaves thread*
#24
Ooops, sorry ODB_69, you're right, wasn't an answer to that.
Not sure i see it as a problem either tbh, but i guess tis avoiding the filter.
Guess we have to wait and see what the team say

That's kinda true, but again it's a bit of a double entendre. The only reason people say it is because it sounds like a swearword.

If double entendre's were banned.....there wouldnt be half the fun on here there is now, you gotta admit it...

the pub would close down too

So, is it allowed or not?
What about stuff like WTF and OMG, which tbh i do find offensive but that's just sensitive little Catholic boy me

LMAO
LMFAO
OMFG
and al the others....

I see no problem with those...I dont see a problem with most to be honest..we are all adults after all and people should be free to say whatever they want IMHO or it becomes censorship...if that happened this site would crumble

I am not saying they should be banned, just trying to find out what is acceptable here. I don't like the blaspheming stuff, but i know that makes me in a minority of one lol, mind, where you to say that about other religions, that's a whole new ball game

ODB_69;2608727

are yes, but are we all adults? I remember this being cited as being a family friendly forum, and stuff that is not acceptable to minors is not allowed, so, dunno.

yes but then we start yet another religious debate...

surely the term 'God' applies to many different religions and not just Christianity, however as your a Catholic obvo automatically you will associate it with your own religion....thats the way the human brain works...not a knock...just fact
No the way you got to think is this....I am Atheist...so I hate it when people bring up god....therefore my views are offended...
Its one of them..you could never please eveyone its impossible...but if you appease the majority, the minority ignore
#32
Oh man, i so don't want a religious debate not by any means, my head hurts :giggle:
I see what you're saying mind, no issue with it at all, just saying, i don't like the OMG and OMFG terms, that's all, but guess that's more of a social thing. That Jade Goody has a lot to answer for

Unfortunately, this was another change in the way thing are that caused this....

Change is not always a good thing IMHO....

Therefore the banning of the death penalty let Jade get away with being alive

So, Bar Steward, is it allowed?
Is, WTF allowed?
Guess since i can type them, and they're not filtered out, they are, but is that right?

What about trucking tanker  Similar to the bar steward theme :)

Generally abbreviated terms such as you've pointed out above shouldn't be put in to the word filter and although I personally wouldn't use them in the forums, the adults here can almost certainly be sure that any kids browsing the forums wouldn't have any idea of what they stand for, just as many users here don't know what 'BOGOF' means for example.

However, abbreviated terms when used to insult or be rude to another user or group of users wouldn't be acceptable, such as "WTF rayman, you're a ****ing bar steward for banning me". As that is obviously directed at an individual [it's okay I'm used to it :-D], so would be dealt with accordingly.

Adults posting in the Miscellaneous forums with abbreviations and name calling [e.g. bar steward], used in general chat isn't particularly offensive to specific groups of people already involved in those 'chat' threads. Although on saying that... If we receive reports about those, we'll use our discretion [sorry as I know some don't like us using it :) but it is quite important here] to act on what we see and decisions are made after discussions with other moderators if possible at the time.

We also need to take some kind of 'middle road' that is in touch with real life situations when dealing with this topic.

For example, would you find it offensive if you were chatting to someone and they said 'Double you tee eff is going on here?" rather than "What the **** is going on here?"

I don't think anyone would?

There's also a worry of the forum becoming too 'sanitized' I think.
#37
That Ray, is one of the funniest post's i've seen for a while, as you can see, i don't get out much
So, seems chat threads have slightly more liberal moderation? That sounds fair, makes sense too and as to the abbreviated terms, again, fair
Least i think i now know where we stand :)

Obviously just being awkward here but surely if posting f & *** falls under JB's explanation of "avoiding the swear filter" then it seems odd that by abreviating down to single letters you are not classed as doing the same thing. To follow the logic of "middle of the road policing", then surely if you can fill in the ***'s then you are mature enough to deal with the word??!?

definatley there are favorites on here and kind of ruins it for the majority,i mean sometimes i have to read a post over and over again just it case it offends anyone when others ,wont name names can say what they wish,i mean why not just be fair accross the board and treat everyone the same.iam saying this as someone who has been recently banned for a bit of light hearted banter, and i mean light,,,probably get banned for this as well,lol.;-)
banned#40
I think the favouritism as you call it, comes from members not mods, maybe its down to some get no reports for posting and others get many.
