My response is in the original thread.

We've always recommended that members upload images that they can control.

I would treat it as a rule, otherwise you run the risk of a post being pulled. The responsibility is for the member to ensure full control of any images posted.

noticed this "rule" being enforced on the old skool wwf (stuff the pandas) thread last night with pics being removed so how come that daft counting pictures thread is still full of hot linked images?

Thats not really true, you [the moderators] recommend sites such as imageshack and tinypic where the user may not have any control after an image is hosted. I would personally trust a major service provider such as the BBC, Google (cache) and Wikimedia just as much as a free image-hosting service...

We recommend the image sharing sites in order that the member posting retains control on the link and the content. Are you stating that these links are recycled by chance or changed by other internet users ?

Apologies, missed this comment.

We will review, however members have to assume responsibility for the content when posting links.

The wrestling thread had to be pulled for 'trolling' reasons and cleaned up. Links to porn stars is not acceptable, even if intended purely as a wind up.

Cheers for that, must've missed the porn stars thing. I thought sigma pulled the thread halfway through due to the hot link thing as some of the wrestlers had disappeared and she left this comment,

"Please don't hotlink images from other websites as it can lead to problems - Upload & host any images from your own image site account please, thanks."

with a further mod edit in the op telling people not to hotlink.

anyway no biggie, was just wonderring why the counting thread remained unscathed.

No, but on imageshack and others similar there option to upload without control and even on registered sites there is a risk, perhaps greater than the risks involved when hot-linking, of the image being tampered with through malice. There is also a risk in people using seemingly honest image-hosting sites which may be uncontrolled or worse maliciously controlled/malware infected etc. My point is several image sources are more trustworthy and often a better option to use (in my opinion) than the recommended image-hosting sites...

I appreciate what you're trying to say. Should any issues arise with the sites we've 'recommended', of which I'm aware none have been realised to date, then our advice would reflect such concerns.

As before, if any such examples were identified, we'd be happy to review.

I can recall someone complaining about there account being hacked at one of the hosting sites a while ago. But my point is more that you should not restrict people from hotlinking to certain image providers, such as the aforemention beeb, google image-cache, wikimedia etc. etc.
