If the old/original post is still active/available then it shouldn't be expired just because there is a newer post.

If someone clicks on the old post and does not see the new listing they'd think it is expired (as its marked as such) when it actually isn't.

For the amount this actually happens I don't think there is any cluttering of HUKD.

Currently a "Top Deal" with 777 degrees of heat (at the time of typing):

From over a month ago...

I regularly find 'old' threads like this & "report" them for "expiring".

It is puzzling that this is not an automatic process by now, considering the prompt that is offered when submitting a new "Deal" if an existing thread exists for the same product page at the merchant's site.

I, like you fp, expire older deals when I know that that a more recent one has been posted. I was interested to see that the number 1 hottest freebie of all time has been re-posted and it's gone very cold. I think some of the lack of heat is down to the fact it is a repost (even though the original is nearly two years old) but others commented that it's been free for a long time and is therefore no longer regarded as a hot new freebie. So the funny thing now is that you have two posts, both active and for the same freebie; one is the hottest of all time and the other is -127 degrees. I'm sure that can't be right!

Another example...

"Current" thread (found 3 hours, 49 minutes ago):

Previous thread (has been expired; found 1 month, 3 days ago):

A previous thread to that (not expired; found 1 month, 1 week ago):

Then more of the same product (but differing prices) if you search for earlier threads; some are expired, some are not.

I guess the question is also relevant to duplicate posts with the old monthly time frame, recently maybe its just Christmas there are lots of duplicate posts which aren't deleted and we spend time reporting them and nothing happens. Should we still report duplicate posts. Example recently have been the Amazon 99p videos and today the virgin mobile deal (now deleted)

I like you too, gerry' ;)

Seriously, yes, it means that any existing threads that have been singled-out as the Hottest over a certain period, or even the "HUKD Pick" threads, will never be challenged/replaced by newer submissions.

Over time, of course, if all threads for the most popular items exist without being expired, then the membership will be less inclined to submit new "Deals" if they keep being slapped with "Spam"/"Duplicate" comments/outcomes.

If there is a rule about the ability to re-list after a month (or four weeks), then it should apply to all threads.

The whole concept of deal temperature and top ten lists adds an element of competitiveness and in many cases encourages members to 'have a go'. If the content of the 'Top Ten' lists, especially the 'all time' lists become stagnant and the legitimate reposts get voted cold then I also believe (as you say) some members will be less inclined to post deals.

Can you hear that echo FP? The mods have left the building and it's just you and me

perhaps there should be a duplicate button as well. I posted the first episode free deal on amazon in freebies on Friday Evening. Then someone else posted the same deal about 25 minutes later (they may not have seem my post before posting) . My post has gone cold at -20 (had a lot of negative posters initially (I think some people vote cold on everything or if they see a cold score they vote cold themselves) when I posted the deal) then the other poster for the same deal has heat of 50

If you see a duplicate (of your thread, or otherwise), use the "Spam" option on the "Report/Spam" link.

would be best if they could rephrase that button or have a separate duplicate button I assumed the spam/report links would be for someone posting links to spam websites or using offensive or abusive language

We've been around this discussion a few times in the past.

It is what it is. You're going to have to live with it.
