Welcome back Gary!

Yep, The * at the end works! :)

@ Shrapnel - please see the help thread in my sig which can help you search to the best results.

The minimum character cannot be changed, as this is a built in part of the forum.
(I think)

thanks for the tip

doesnt really work with xda or e70 though since it only shows a handful of threads over the past year when there are alot more (i found them by manually searching)

i hope this change could be implemented somehow

AFAIK it just a setting in the config file but it puts more strain on the sever.

Do a google search using this:
#7
only if its been indexed, i.e could have to wait for it to be a week old.

The past few days on google, I have noticed that things seem to be indexed almost immediately. For example, if I google a newbies username, it gives a hit on HUKD (you know the bit saying our latest member is XXXX)

From Google :
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/fulltext-fine-tuning.html

The minimum and maximum length of words to be indexed is defined by the ft_min_word_len and ft_max_word_len system variables (available as of MySQL 4.0.0). See Section 5.3.3, “Server System Variables” (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/server-system-variables.html). The default minimum value is four characters. The default maximum depends on your version of MySQL. If you change either value, you must rebuild your FULLTEXT indexes. For example, if you want three-character words to be searchable, you can set the ft_min_word_len variable by putting the following lines in an option file:

[mysqld]
ft_min_word_len=3

Then restart the server and rebuild your FULLTEXT indexes.

I knew there was an XD Card thread the other day but I couldn't find it for ages due to the XD part being omitted from my results, thanks for the tip with the * though, will try that next time.
#11
the * only works with a 3 letter search that you want to look for, not for a 2 letter search.

For the likes of that:

Go to advanced search
Type in card as the search term
Select "search title only" undreneath that
Select "hot deals" forum
Click search
Then using the "ctrl F" command on your keyboard, search for XD

I have been using this forum for some time now and I still have problems searching.

No insult meant, but why is the search function so bad here?

Maybe I am spoilt by Google, but there are many other places where you can search much easier.

I am constantly being told a word is too common or short, elsewhere if you have to keep that word you type for example +help. And why no exact phrases such as "Little Britain". If you have a long phrase and you put in a few words you end up with hundreds of useless results because each word is searched individually.

I have read the Sticky, and please don't tell me to search for the answer.
#15
It's a generic search built into the forum software, not something that we've made.
#16
Many thanks for the replies.

Guess I will have to play a little more. I can't believe it worked so well on the Little Britain example, I searched and managed to find what I was looking for eventually, but I never saw a fraction of those results.
#17
"Box Set" is a classic :p
#18
See the link in my sig on how to minimise your effort and maximise your hits. Works very well for me :)

Nice one matey:thumbsup:

Just tried searching on here using the built in search for a Vax, Vax* and nothing. Shame you can't order Google hits by date or it would be perfect.

Go to advanced search, Put "cleaner" or "vacuum" in the box, select "search titles only", select hot deals forum only.

Then use Ctrl+F with "vax" on your keyboard to quickly skim through the first few pages.
#23
was just about to start a new thread complaining about how I can't search for sky deals and saw this....
#24
Would it be possible to add "ps3" into the list of acceptable search words in the vBulletin admin area? It's too short to be accepted as a valid search word at the moment so you miss a lot of the deals when you search. Maybe add "psp" and "360" as well if they're not already in there.
#25
psp 360 gba wii ps3 nds etc...

No he was really being serious. He's never seen you post that tip before.
#28
Arr right i couldnt tell hehe, i think i stole it from someone else on here.
#29
I'd love to know why Admin doesn't just change it, or at the very least add some more common searches to the allowed list (both easy to do via admin panel), threads like this pop up all the time the mods tell us how we can best use the search feature here, but don't think I have even seen the official reason why it's not just changed (I am sure there must be one)? hmm.
[admin]#30
The official reason is b/c of performance issues related to indexing and searching on a 2 character index. Search is one of the biggest performance hits on the servers and dropping to low character indexing increases that hit.

It's something we're reviewing to see if we can move it on to a different server etc but for now it needs to stay here.

Thanks for answering :)

...were not included in your search: :x

Im greeted by this message frequently when trying to search the forum for particular stuff and it really bugs me. For example, searching for 'LCD' or 'TFT' brings it up which given the number of deals posted for such items is daft surely?! Why is the search restricted to this extent?

Disclaimer: I love this site but im in a bad mood so thought i'd get this out of my system :?
#33
you need to type a word more than 4 letters thats why

as to why its restricted to 4 words or more im sure only a admin will know
#34
Merged to same topic.

See my sig links for help... if you're searching for an LCD monitor - then search for the word monitor, in titles only, in the hot deals forum only, for example (in advanced search). You'll be amazond the good hits you get by tailoring your search.
#36
Can we not shorten the searhc parameters to 2 characters ?

I need to find a 19" LCD TV - but every word gets rejected !!!!
#37
LOL.. even 3 is difficult :)

Emma has a help thread on this...

Hi

I'm interested to know how you can search for a Wii or any other 2 or 3 letter word via the "search the forum" box.

I understand the word is too small for the search engine to find the word - can admin maybe change the advanced search option for this?

Cheers
Chris
