Is this your missing thread? LINK

That is the thread which had vanished. Why did it, and my first post on this subject in the 'feedback' section vanish?

The link doesn't seem to work via HDUK.

It's been marked as SPAM again. Can someone (a mod) please restore it, again.
Is this being marked as SPAM by the same person each time?

So the domain is owned by a non UK company with a PO box address. How does this make it SPAM? PO box addresses are common in some places.

By that logic giveawayoftheday.com deals should all be marked as SPAM.
A non UK company, invalid address registered for the domain.
[mod]#7
giveawayoftheday.com have been established on HUKD for some time and will have had a number of verification checks carried out by the HUKD admin team.
I have asked HUKD admin if they can look at your post and carry out the same checks. If all is OK with the company we can bring your thread back on to the forum.
Thanks

Ok, Admin are happy with it arduino; so it's back on the forum

Given this is the case, is there anywhere where the rules are clearly stated about what can be posted and where? What proof people will need to provide in order to prove something isn't SPAM?

The query over a postal address seems illogical considering the geographical knowledge and knowledge of local postal systems required. As you can see, Giveawayoftheday.com is registered with an invalid postal address, purely a district in Texas, yet they're posted every other day here.

It doesn't seem reasonable to remove something based on these criteria, or what people perceive the situation to be.

Plenty of new merchants are posted daily.

As mods we generally remove these posts from public view whilst the companies details are verified.

For example, lets say a pair of Ugg Boots at £49.99 was posted for an (imaginary) company called 'ReallyGenuineUggs.co.uk' and we didn't remove it whilst mods and admin looked into the company and 90 minutes later god knows how many members had 'bought a pair only for our checks to find that it was a fake website, not selling Uggs and taking peoples credit card details.

Surely it's better that any deal for any new merchant (and that includes freebies, vouchers, comps etc) is thouroghly looked at by the mods/admin before allowing onto the forum?

There's no hard and fast rule about what is allowed onto the forum; we look at each 'merchant' and make a decision. At first, your post looked unsafe as it was a none UK company with no genuine contact address, however, after further checks it was decided that they were legit and your post could be reinstated.

More info can be found in the help section

Anyone can post a deal here as long as they’re not an advertiser or merchant: HotUKDeals is not a promotional tool for businesses and companies and anyone found posting items for the purposes of personal gain will be banned from the site. We may occassionally remove deals if we feel the merchant in question does not have adequate contact and/or registration details. Generally speaking we only allow UK based companies, although allowances on the above will always be made for merchants who have a strong reputation with our members.

I hope that answers your concerns arduino; but if you are in doubt about any merchant before posting a deal you can always use this site to check their registration details and if you are still in any doubt send a report asking the mods/admin to look into the company. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

'ReallyGenuineUggs.co.uk'
?

GenuinelyRealUggsly, more like! ;)

Happy new avatar, by the way, andy.

I see MovieTyme [ http://whois.domaintools.com/movietyme.com ] & CD-WOW! [ http://whois.domaintools.com/cdwow.com ] both have non-UK addresses in their WhoIs records & both trade from locations outside the UK.

Are they exceptions to the rule? Or is it just that they are established merchants so they are allowed to be listed? I seem to recall Amazon.com (i.e .the US site) deals listing not being allowed though. (insert "confused" emoticon here)

(CD-WOW! deal listings often raise a few questions on stability of the organisation regardless)
(DealExtreme.com is yet another oddity; prices in dollars [like Amazon.com] but allowed to be listed)

Hi fp
Them two examples you gave and countless others.
I think this bit covers none UK:-
Generally speaking we only allow UK based companies, although allowances on the above will always be made for merchants who have a strong reputation with our members.

My point is though that we don't allow 'any' website to have deals posted - new merchants are checked out by mods/admin whether they are UK or none UK based and if we feel/find that the deal is legit and the company are 'safe' then we allow it on the forum.

Hi andy,

I did wonder how a merchant got on the "nice" list & wasn't condemned to the "naughty" list forever, as it is difficult for Admin's elves to rate a deal if nobody manages to see them.

You are all doing a good job in any respect. Thanks for your clarification.

BFN,

fp.

I suppose it depends on how hard you look. Much of the crap on giveawayoftheday.com ships with old third party libraries, possibly rendering users open to security issues most of them won't understand or begin knowing where to look for themselves. This is irrespective of other quality issues caused by old versions of dlls.

This sorta makes the advice on checking whois records redundant, giveawayoftheday.com, a non UK company, doesn't have a valid address, just an area of San Antonio, Texas listed, their giveaways often require installation of crapware (bing toolbar etc) and have the problems described above. Compare this to the well moddb.com, no UK company, valid address, no crapware.

Obviously quality checks have to be made, but they're only worth doing if done right.

Perhaps it would also be an idea when removing things to explain to people why. I've seen all the comments within threads vanish without explanation which leaves people wondering "what was that all about?".

Can't see why a company needs a uk address to give away a downlable freebie? (If I have understood what's on offer correctly)

I obviously understand the wariness with sending £10,000k to an unknown company with a PO Box in Nigeria - I would like to think common sense would be enough to alert members, but I can see why the mod team would take it down as spam.

Maybe a little loosening of the rules for freebies though??
