To be honest, I thought most companies did this?!

Maybe, but it seems very prevalent with Argos and Woolworths on this site, and as tons of deals for both retailers get posted on here, I've specified them. :)

Argos is quite interesting as in their sale catalogues they usually do say in the small print if the item has been on sale at the same price before (or even if its been cheaper)...

What does it matter? I regularly see people pointing out the RRP even though it has NEVER been sold at that price.

Only fools get fooled by this ploy.

Then isn't it up to people on here to do what they can to help the fools? ;-)

A fool and his money are soon parted, I doubt HUKD will change this 'trueism'.

We can change! We can promote change! We can ensure people's houses are only full of **** they didn't want which they genuinely got for half price or less!

Legally, if a company was to state that they've reduced something, then the item MUST have been sold at the "was" price for a continuous period of 28 days.

The only exception is where they specifically say "RRP:" rather than say "was" (the former suggests it's the price they're recommended to sell it at, the latter suggests that they have sold it at that price).

As I've said elsewhere... if they HAVE sold the item at that price in the past then surely it doesn't matter? If woolworths sells it for £50, reduces it to £20, then reduces it to £15, then it's still been reduced from £50 to £15... the fact that it's been reduced twice isn't a problem in my eyes... Good on them if they decide to reduce something that was already reduced!! :)

I agree that having it in the title is annoying. Not sure we can "legislate" that with posters though. I don't like exclamation marks in titles either but have thought again it's maybe best not to tell people how to write.

Yeah, it's good that something is even further reduced, no question - my issue is more that the way some deals on here are presented is as if the biggest price was the immediately previous one, when it simply wasn't. Personally, it changes my opinion of a bargain if something appears to be 80% off, but then you find out they'd been selling it at 70% off for the past three weeks. That just suggests to me that they can't sell them, which in turn suggests maybe the item isn't that great.

No, I know, far too much to expect every word in a title to be scrutinised or amended, but I wasn't expecting action out of this, just wondered what the general feeling was about it. And - ZOMG - it seems we agree to an extent.

If it's not an issue, then I'll continue to highlight where an item isn't as reduced as it may seem - just so people get the clearest idea of what they're getting.

As for the OP, I really cant see how anyone can be expected to know what the previous price was. However, if members know, thats what the board is for!!!!!

Well yes - a quick search often brings up a previous post at the previous price - it's how I find them anyway. There's no other way I would know! :-D

You noticed that too then. I thought it was rather amusing, as if somebody would buy something 'on offer' that had previously been sold at £5 less

The 'Savvy' would only buy something if they wanted it in the first place.

Others who buy for the sake of it because it has xx% knocked off the price only have themselves to blame. lol

What about your thoughts on this FACT

80% of Argos Sales are items that are on 'PROMOTION'

The Catalogue is a guideline and as soon as its out prices are reduced straight away! This way the customers feel they are getting a bargain (10% off, £5 off etc.) but really its the price its going to be at for the majority of time that catalogue is in print!!!

All companies do it but I feel that people should evaluate the current price when buying something, the previous price should not even be considered when contemplating buying something.

For example,

A TV....Was £700...Now £300........but the same TV costs £250 at another retailer and has NEVER been on sale. This is Argos' way of capturing customers (I Believe) and it WORKS going by there sales.

I work for Argos part time by the way, can comment on almost anything!

Couldn't agree with this more! Whilst not posted any deals myself and more of a lurker I cannot believe the number of buy this inflatable summer thing reduced in Woolworths from £399 to £49 saving £350!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woolworths probably 'sold' this for 28 days in the depths of winter for £399 just to discount in the summer, get posted on here and get more airtime.

still some reason people vote them hot!!!!
