it is pretty obvious what is going on bet seems best to keep your thoughts to yourself

There a good thing, unless its being abused. Most might not really know what price to sell for, but they do seem to turn into an auction straight away....

One for a 60gb PS3 yesterday...how much? 1st comment....I'll give you £250 for it.....that needs to be stopped. That should have to be a seperate thread, but they will just start using PM to do it.....

so its 50/50 really but I see your point

Agreed there are circumstances where someone may not know the rough price but surely for most things people can do a bit of their own research (look at what they have sold for on ebay etc). Invariably the people who make threads like this do want to sell the item and already have any idea of what they would accept.

In the two cases above its fairly obvious the OPs are looking for offers (presumably by PM) including consideration of the pirated games - but what they are doing is not against the rules at the moment (unless I'm mistaken?).

it really doesnt matter what rules are put in place, within days, sometimes hours they have found a way round them, whilst there are members that dont mind how they get something there will be the members that dont care, and sadly its usually well established members that behave like this

Is it against rules to trade by PM or just advised against though?
#7
i did it cause i didn't have clue what to sell for, didn't get much help though so its still sitting here not getting used
#8
Against the rules to do a FS/FT forum trade via PM.

That doesn't really apply to misc forum though - and after all nobody will know if a trade has taken place in these cases.

guerilla - I guess the real concern is like the examples above where people are clearly trying to sell pirated stuff etc, which is unfortunately quite frequent at the moment.

yeah, I'm seeing an increase too in the amount of 'back up' software available with these consoles......
Oh I have these....but I won't say I'm selling them....then its ok......

No it isn't...we know what your saying!

I'll be honest - I'm not really sure what the best solution is - banning all 'price-check' threads altogether does seem a bit harsh (but it would solve the problem), creating a special set of rules for such threads would over-complicate the already lengthy and impenetrable site rules even further, but allowing things to continue as they are is inviting more and more of these threads (and almost certainly illegal activity...)

agreed, without Mods viewing PM's or a ban on PM's not a lot they can do right now, but pretty sure they must have noticed by now and be coming up with something

lol,

let me get this right... users are exploiting a loophole in the rules that doesnt specify trading via pm in the misc forum??

Rules should carry accross forums and should be expected as the site "norm". Not looked at as specific to the FS/FT forum, maybe a wording change to the rules is needed as this really could open up big issues for scammers. Hence why the FS/FT forum was put in place and enforced with such rules!..

Hard to say that trading has definately been done via pm, just that these sort of threads certainly would encourage it...

2 people attempting to sell pirated games in less than 24 hours in the misc forum isn'ta tiny problem, sorry. It might not be the biggest issue at the moment, but if nothing is done and its allowed to continue more and more people might see it as a way to trade in illegal goods ;-)

According to you there are 2 people attempting to sell pirated materials.

24 hours is such a small time-scale, how many have (according to your definition) have attempted to sell pirated material using this method in the last month or two.
I believe that the number you will come back with would be insignificant.

If they wanted to sell pirated material, all they have to do is list it "For Sale", and say that they will remove any illegal items from the hard drive. :)

I've locked those threads. It's against the rules to sell pirate games on here, and I think that those threads are not appropriate, even in the misc forum.

like for example someone posting this:

I've got a ps2 with a 120gb hard drive, I've put on a million games that load from the hard drive, so how much would it be worth if i sold it?

Well, it would be worth quite a lot to someone that isnt bothered about owning pirate material (not owning the original discs would constitute this), but that doesnt mean it could be sold on here.

what the OP is saying that though it is ok to ask the community anything in the Misc forum, to get an idea of what "those" people would pay for such thing, it would be hard to stop another member PM'ing the OP of those type of posts offering to buy.. Opening up a new method of scams or simply a loophole for those type of things to be sold.

Another example, (yes I have learned from my experience!!!!) if i were to have posted in the misc forum about the dodgy duo's, what are they worth as they are classed as being fake; someone then PM'ing me to buy one.... you get the idea..

Please, no more reference to my BAD BAD decision of selling one here, it's not going to happen again but i thought if used as a good example then why not put it...

yes we all know its blatant but some people really dont care about any of the rules as long as they get what they want, whether it be buying or selling, all we can do is report anything we think may be suss and then leave it up to the mods to decide

whats the point when you don't do anything and don't even bother to reply to the people doing the reporting? It would take about 5 seconds to reply saying 'thanks' so people know you have actually bothered to read the report.

What exactly isn't allowed to be sold traded on here anyway?

Are you trying to say you want us to PM you with a thanks every time we get a report?

If you want members to help you by reporting, if you then do nothing about the thread that has been reported then surely it would be common courtesy to reply with a thanks at least, so the person who reports it knows you got the report. Or if you do nothing then let the person who reports it know why nothing was done so they don't waste your time in the future by reporting more threads when in fact there is nothing wrong with them.

Obviously if you post on the thread, delete it or close it, then its obvious you have read the report

Would be a lot of added work, only a few seconds...but all those replies would mount up, but I see what your saying....
Easier thing to do would to get change to the actual site so mods get an option button saying 'confirm' or something with all PM's

but still a lot of work

I report about 20 threads a day, Sassie and others more probably, I'd guess 100 or so reports a day, so 100 or so private messages. I never go back to check if the thread reported has been locked/removed. I report it and have done my bit. I don't want thanks, just to know that I may have helped stop someone getting scammed is thanks enough...

100 or so......???
Is there really that many dodgy trades on here per day? I don't read most of the for sale stuff, but are they really that bad?

That sounds about right bazzaric. My PM inbox limit is 1000 and I have to empyt it once a month as it is!

There aren't that many dodgy trades, I guess most of the reports are for minor infringements.
I usually put a reminder in the thread if I spot it, and report only if it's ignored, or it's a "Major" rule break.

\I dont expect any pm's to say dealt with or thanks, but i do personally wonder if there is a better way for reports to be dealt with. It seesm on some days reports are getting missed and on many occasions i have reported the same thread numerous times, sometimes i guess there busy, other times they just get missed, sometimes i have even pm'd a mod to ask why nothing has been done, and always have had a response from that to say sorry its been missed, whilst one time i did get a pm from a mod to say stop reporting threads more than once as they where busy, so really we can all do our best but if the report system isnt running well then we all get cheesed off with it, the mods and the members

Please do not take this personal to any part of the team, it is not meant to be just an idea that maybe the report system needs re-looking at

Bump on this - they seem even more frequent now and are so predictable, inevitably end up statements like 'if you want to make me an offer...'.

I appreciate it seems harsh to say your not allowed to ask the value of anything is misc altogether, but that might be the only fair solution in my opinion...

I agree completely - harsh but ultimately fairer for everyone in the long run. If people need guidance on prices they can do that elsewhere anyway.

stick the price check threads in deal requests

not really a suitable place either tbh as its a deal request page not an item price page,

i feel they should still be allowed in misc but anyone who post on offer for it on the actuall thread should get a warrning or worse.. I feel it would stop it happening but the fact no1 is ever punished for doing it means it will continue to happen
