good question, alot of sites advertise in some form or another so i dont see the problem?

Not sure of the thread you're referring to. Sometimes people post links to "merchants" that are really more like advertising portals that are making money off the traffic and not by actually selling products. I don't think any of the "proper" online retailers use adsense on their site to be honest so it's often also a sign of a dodgy merchant or something odd going on.

The thread did say adwords (paying google to advertise your site on others) though, not adsense (having google ads on your site to earn money from clicks).

Here's the thread it was mentioned in:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97870

and the thread over on MSE it referred to:

If you look at that site Starlet it runs adsense on all the pages. Which ever mod said adwords meant adsense (its not a commonly known distinction).

Personally, to be really honest I understand it may sound arbitrary but I feel very uncomfortable with a merchant using Adsense on their site. We already get accusations from HUKD members that merchants do mispricing etc just to get new customers ... how about when they are just making money off the traffic never mind any product?

It's also just unprofessional and a good indication that something is amiss or spammy about the website. As in my first post it just doesn't make sense for a proper retailer to be running Google adsense on their site. (why would you run ads for all your competitor's ink cartridges next to your own??).

I am also not sure why mouseclick posted on mse about the subject rather than here so we could have a discussion about it.

Edit: Here's the link to the merchant by the way for anyone interested - http://www.valueshop.co.uk/info.asp?MFGno=SDSDPH-2048-902

As for saying HUKD content is filtered...yeah I guess if that means we remove a lot of spam and self-promo then yeah it is. Personally I see more and more clear spam on mse that is not getting removed so hopefully that means HUKD is doing a better job of policing the genuine/non-biased deals.

I don't think this is Starlet's site just to be clear on that hehe

Personally I wouldn't recommend running adsense on your product pages vinylandtrinkets. If you were Tesco would you run banners on the site saying "Shop at Morrisons the prices are better"?

Yeah, no definitely not my site lol

The fact the mod that sent the PM meant Adsense and not Adwords clears ALOT up for me, it does make sense now (not sure how much I agree with it though)...but not allowing sites that used Adwords...couldn't make head nor tail of that.

More curiousness if you don't mind answering? Would a merchant automatically be disallowed if they have adsense ads running? As in, it's 100% not allowed...or are other things taken into consideration as well? Like their general reputation, how well known they are, if every thing else about the site seems legit? I'd imagine quite a lot of smaller retailers have adsense, it makes me wonder how many deals we are missing out on because of this rule.

No of course a merchant advertising with Adwords is irrelevant so can see why that was confusing.

I don't think its automatically disallowed, its just a factor along with everything else. I haven't talked to the mods about why valueshop wasn't allowed but my first impression just looking at the site is that it is not necessarily a professional site, plus the adsense, plus security plus maybe there were issues of self-promo, I don't know off-hand but reading that mse thread made me wonder.

To be honest I see very very few merchant sites that run adsense. As I wrote above its not really a great business decision if you're actually a serious merchant. If a merchant is just dabbling and making a couple pounds/day by sending customers to competitors is more important than actually retaining a customer and branding the site then again it would make me worried about their business model and support.

I asked if I could post a link to dads blog site as I thought it might interest a few people on here but was told no because his site had adwords on - dont really understand the problem though
[admin]#9
kelly_o_fanatic - that would definitely be a case where we have to draw the line. It's really important to keep the site and offers bias free and allowing self-promo would quickly spiral out of control.

Its just a blog site about about music - not selling anything so dont see the problem
[mod]#11
Just for all the Starlet & his site posts.............Starlet is a she. :whistling:

I remember this site because I reviewed it. To make money you don't have to sell a hard product. Having a music review site that links to albums and runs adwords is a business and in this case I felt it fell under the self-promo category the same way I would respond to someone wanting to post their own freebie site for example. If he was just doing it as a hobby without the money making aspect and as you are a long standing member it would have been ok for you to "promote" it in Misc but the money making aspect to it crossed that line.

Let's not get off-topic though. You can pm me if you want.

Sorry starlet, I didn't actually realise there was a difference.

Honestly, very few deals are removed for this reason, if I had to give a figure, it would be one or two a month I guess. But as admin also said above, it's not just about that, there are other factors which we take into consideration too...
