I thought this thread was about the general election and thought it was a good suggestion...

"I voted for Gordon because he's cuddly"

just live with it matey, the question has been asked hundreds of times and there is no answer... list items if you want and if they get hot enjoy it... if not put it down to experience and move on... the site has always been the same with some that just enjoy voting cold whenever the fancy takes them as is their right

I'm not convinced it's a good idea.

Some people browse HUKD using their phones and not all phones are suitable for typing.

I don't always have the time to write an explanation, which of course, would be exacerbated if I had to explain every vote.

Sometimes it's obvious why a deal's hot or cold.

The threads of really hot and really cold deals would become cluttered with reasons why a deal is hot or cold and many of them are bound to be the same. What's more, such clutter would make threads less appealing to read if most of the posts were reasons why the deal got voted hot or cold. It would also make it more difficult to follow the thread of the thread as it were. For instance, following the general discussion of a hot computer deals like the legendary Dell Dimension E520 or the even the Acer Aspire One deal from ASDA would be a daunting task. There were a lot of helpful posts within those threads that would get lost among the deluge of enforced comments like you suggest.

Some members might be shy, dyslexic or be computer illiterate (my mum is).

I find it frustrating when deals I post get voted cold by other members, but I accept that that's their prerogative and I think that's how it should be.

That would be true which means we would not get ridiculously hot (or cold) deals unless the deals are ridiculously good (or bad) which would make the temperature of the deals more accurate

That is wrong; people should not just be able to vote something cold without reason. You say put it down to experience but how can you learn from that. If someone votes cold for no reason, the poster does not know why the deal is cold and cannot improve the next deals they post.

I agree with some of your points. If you are using a phone then it would be quite difficult to post a reason.

yes sometimes it is obvious why a deal is hot or cold (like if there is a free iPad, obviously that would get very hot very quickly) but sometimes the poster might think the deal is great and post it only to see that in a few minutes the deal is stone cold and with no reason as to why people are voting it cold, it is obvious to the poster that the deal is good but other people seem to disagree. Maybe there is a better deal elsewhere or the shop has a bad reputation but no one knows this except the person who voted cold because he did not leave a comment. That means people could be missing a good deal which is the opposite of what this site is about.

I also agree with you about the threads becoming cluttered. I suggest that if this feature is implemented that it is made more like the reputation feature. this means that when you vote hot or cold a text box comes up asking you to say a reason for voting, and all the reasons for voting are collected and shown on a page attached to the deal (similar to when you click the reputation link next to a post)

I am not shy, dyslexic or computer illiterate and know no one who is so i cannot relate to that.

What i can say is that if you are shy then you should have no worries because everyone else is doing it so you should not feel too out of place, if you are computer illiterate you should not have many problems either because if you can vote hot or cold and can type you should be fine. If you are dyslexic all i can say is spellcheck everything before posting.
