Recommendation: Why not add a 'Dislike' button?
Hi,
Just wanted to recommend a 'Dislike' button to be introduced alongside the existing 'Like' button for comments posted by users. Although I see some comments deserving of likes, there are other comments which deserve to be shown to be disliked by users. I've seen quite a few comments deserving of a 'dislike' over the years at HUKD and I'm sure others will agree. However, at present, there is no way to show that you dislike a comment besides commenting.
I've seen quite a few forums with both a 'Like' and 'Dislike' option and think it's a very good idea.
Personally, I think that those hitting the dislike button shouldn't have their name publicly displayed as it is with those that have 'Liked' a comment (which I also don't really like IMO).
Here's a couple of examples of forums adopting both the 'Like' and 'Dislike' button:
MacRumors - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1324021
The Student Room - http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk (click on any random thread).
Anyways, that's my recommendation. Hope others agree.

Ok we'll copy and we'll also get popular :D
You can always edit a comment after one (or more) "Like(s)" has (have) been applied anyway.
Yes, you are.
Why would people edit comments?

"Like" this comment if you disagree with brilly.

one of those loves is the bigger crime.

So, another bucketful of bugs coming our way then.

Back to the subject matter though...
As well as a "Dislike" request, how about the ability to "cancel" (retract) a previous "Like" nomination?
Oh yes, & the ability to "Like" the thread description, so that those that do not wish to vote on a "Deal", but thank the member for their time listing it, are satisfied from many previous requests across countless other Feedback threads.

Regarding the proposition, if we are to see a balanced opinion on posts made, a 'Dislike' button should be added. The argument being that the 'Like' button provides members with a very quick and simple method to show their support/appreciation/liking of a post but there is not a 'quick/simple' method for those that do not support the view/comment/post. The only way for those that disapprove/dislike something to show their disapproval is to post a comment in the thread stating such disapproval/dislike. The counter argument could be that such a comment could then be 'Liked' by those who disapproved the original comment but that doesn't take away the the fact that the disapproval needs to be stated in a post rather than simply added as a Click.
It was only later that the names of those showing their support of a comment were shown.
When this happened I stopped using the facility for a while as I preferred the anonymity. The "Reputation" system worked better, in my opinion, as you could provide (optional) comments to the member who had commented & only they would see these (in their "Member Profile").
I have since "mellowed" & regularly use the "Like" system now. However, I do not do this in threads where I feel the application of a "Like" to any comment would result in future confrontation or the antagonising of any party in that thread. The introduction of a "Dislike" nomination would, I feel, cause similar, if not additional, issues.
I agree that for balance, a "Dislike" feature should be available alongside the existing "Like" feature, but I now choose to use the "Private Message" system to provide further information or show my support to certain members when I think they need moral support rather than a list of member names besides any given comment.
I don't mind confrontation, far from it, when it is justified, but there are some members of this forum (Admin, specifically, from previous admission) who do not get involved in threads where there is obvious dissention/conflict of opinions.
This site has enough members with grievances about each other; it doesn't need another method of highlighting those that disagree with an opinion, lifestyle choice, product selection, or whatever.

Regarding the inclusion of a 'Dislike' button; I doubt the simple clicking of 'Dislike' will result in conflict. The 'Like' button hasn't resulted in some 'Love-in'... mores the pity some might say! If someone 'Dislikes' something strongly enough they will post their disapproval. That post/opinion may or may not spark a heated discussion but that has nothing to do with the simple clicking of a button either way. And there is nothing wrong in heated debate. It has brought about some changes in history so opinions should be welcomed.
It won't be added as it's too much work but I agree with the proposal.
