If so, would it be possible to change the quote format to only quote the last post rather than the whole chain?
I'd support this, regardless of whether this is the cause of slowness or not - quoting a full chain can make posts excessively unwieldy to compose. It's fairly standard across most forums that quotes take only the immediately preceding post and I wouldn't expect there to be any significant detrimental impact to the ease of following a conversation.

Can you drop a couple of examples of where you've tried to quote the posts and it has done this? I'll use some browsers to try to replicate and see what the issue is. Ta :)

Erm if you go through any of my posts in the labour manifesto thread, fox hunting thread or French Election then you should get a few.

I'm almost definite it is the multi quote causing it as one of my replies took ages to jump down to the reply box and when it did it said it had exceeded the maximum length of characters for a post.

This was all on mobile chrome browser. Unsure if desktop is effected.

Will post any direct links to posts if I notice it again.
