Would love to see this implemented, but not holding out much hope based on what happened after it was posted 2 years ago:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/feedback/can-we-have-auto-tagging-on-deals/317708

Or other decent tagging suggestions were ignored:

We have actually written auto tagging and it is live. We don't do the suggested part yet but it's a good idea.

In that case i'm glad the coding is already in place, but disappointed the scripting hasn't been refined, and disappointed the feature isnt being better utilised atm.

Any chance we can see:

1. Standardised tags having a highlighted background so they're more distinct, and used more often for searching.

2. More focus on refining the auto-tagging keywords, either from an official thread started to collect suggestions for which keywords/standardised tags should be added, or from a smaller group of people.

-I would suggest most major trademarks should be standardised tags. With the various spellings of each individual one being keywords leading to the standardised tag.
i.e. "playstation3"/"playstation 3"/"ps3"/"ps 3"/"playstation" all being keywords that lead to the adding of the tags "PS3" and "Gaming"

3. An indication during thread submission of which tags will be added automatically, so user doesnt unwittingly duplicate/clutter the tag area with unnecessary tags.

4. After the improvements, maybe some publicity of the feature so more people start using it/relying on it? And perhaps a significant mention of tagging on the search results page.
Maybe a cloud map displaying the most popular tags, or a dedicated "tag" page to make it easier to navigate the tags.

Either way i hope tagging receives a little more attention from the developers as it sounds like most of the code is already in place to make this feature much more useful.

Cheers for that... so, based on that drive thread, the keyword "drive" adds the following automatically? "hard drive, cheap storage, flash drive, storage, usb drive"

That's pretty bad for numerous reasons :(

Wonder if there's an issue with the coding and they can only make the script respond to a single word rather than multiple.
If so i hope they can fix that, because it'll be very hard to make the auto-tagged worthwhile if not.

If the coding isnt the issue, and it's just the actual word list then i hope they start making progress on that.

Right now the auto tagging is only configured for a couple different popular tags manually. It definitely shouldn't be matching on the word drive though, I will check into that to see what is going on there.

Re the tag cloud feature, right now we have something of a tag cloud on the tag pages:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/xbox-360

On the right hand side it shows tags that are related to the tag page you are viewing.

The related tags feature is useful, cheers for that. Never noticed it because i never browse using the tags section seeing as they're not popular enough and arent standardised.

Any chance we can get the other things i suggested implemented, or?

When I post an iPad competition, is it auto tagging that adds excessive tags or an overzealous apple fanboy?

For that one in particular I believe it was the auto-tagger. Do you feel any of those tags were added in error?

Another example?

"Did any longstanding hukd members miss out on the Hotel Chocolat offer?"

Tags presently set: holiday, hotel, vacation

BFN,

Those tags were added by the OP.

Ah, I see! Sorry, the log was lying to me. Yes it looks like it's matching on "hotel".

We've got a fix for this one in the pipes, in the meantime those threads should not be tagged like that anymore. Rest Easy, Citizens. :)

EDITED: It looks like the non-linked tags actually are intentional. If you click on the tag link, it brings you to our new "cheap-{x}" page, which acts as a kind of shopping guide for that item. We've been working on this for awhile, and are introducing it slowly. I believe removing the links from the other tags is an SEO thing, although the threads should still appear on the other tag pages. I'm looking into the blank tags now.

Thanks, HD.

It is not obvious to me, at present, how non-"Deal" threads with the "PS3" tag, for instance, are viewed.

Also, was this new approach to a dedicated page for products influenced by saxo_appeal's previous thread?

"Reviews from users which have purchased items"

BFN,

fp.

I believe the new approach was to help people find the best deals on certain "hot" items, and enable them to make educated purchases. I think it makes sense to have the tags like they were before on non-deal threads.

Indeed it was someone from the dealspwn team. We have some great copy writers. :)

I think that every time I point out spelling, grammatical, typographical, or just missing information in their articles! ;)

Fortunately, we all take it in good spirits.

They love me really.

Tags have gone to **** today, and bilology isn't even a word, let alone a tag.

You obviously missed my intended humour, Phil.

Hmmmmmm. I'll give that some thought before I make my final decision.

Well, you learn something new every day. :)

Would it not be better to turn auto tagging off until it works properly?

Allowing the users who submitted the original thread to allow/disallow additional tags would be very welcome.

"Unfixed"? Now no comma at all!...

"Tags: PS3ps3 accessory"

There's a comma there for me. You are using FF correct? I checked with FF and chrome.

Whoopsie. Got a fix for that one now. Will be out shortly. Thanks for pointing it out!

How did the other thread "fix itself" earlier? Did somebody edit & change the tags causing a self-correction?
#25
I suspect someone added an additional tag to that thread, causing the bug to disappear, as it can only appear (until my fix goes out) on threads that only have the "cheap-ps3" tag and one other tag.
#26
Should be good now.
#27
OK, thanks.

We've been tweaking tags quite a bit over the past little while. I do agree we should update that page though! I'll see what I can do. Thanks!

Of course, it may not have been automatically added.

I may be a misguided method of stealth (read: spam) advertising that will result in a ban for the named merchant.

PS. I have "reported" this comment for "Mod team" review.

No, I believe it was an auto-tagging error. It was resolved and all threads tagged with it incorrectly have been reverted. :) Thanks for pointing it out! We wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
