whoops sorry, so it is

I hate that we can't change it in the new site, it's only a minor thing but strongly affects how I use and feel about HUKD, I don't use this place nearly as often any more because by the time I hit page 10 of the new deals and I am only on about 5 hour old threads, I decide I can't be bothered looking any more :(

You can't do it.

Admin has said that the boxes on the right hand side cause the problem with "Dead space".

Same here

The balance for us is trying to display as much as we can against the load of the server. When we did the current limit we checked it against other sites to see what was common.

That's the problem, other sites suck!

Shouldn't make any difference to the server whether I view 5 pages of 10 or 1 page of 50. In fact it'd be easier on the server as it'd have to load the rest of the stuff once rather than 5 times. Could be changable so if I just want to keep refreshing the first page then it could have just 10 on it but if I wanted to look through that last 8 hours worth the subsequent pages could have 25 on or something. So page 1 only 10 threads as that'll get refreshed often, pages 2 and onwards 25 as it'll make looking back much quicker and easier and less load on the server.

Also the auto mark forums read where you've read upto never returned. Was a great feature to be able to see how far back you've already read. Otherwise I start looking at posts that I've already read as I don't know whether there's anything new in them as they don't drop off bold like they used to.

Have to agree. its a nightmare now as I'm on page 15 after last viewing 4 hours ago! this must be easy for a programmer to change, surely?

Also hate the time since last posting on the right rather than physical posting time. have to look and work out how many hours ago each time when I come back to my PC!

That's the bit I'm trying to describe, do you remember that all the threads that had a post made since you last looked would be in bold? So you could look through and when they stopped being bold would be where you had read up to. Now the cut off is at 24 hours which is useless.

Having used the new site for a while now - it reminds me of why I stopped visiting MSE as much as I used to. The number of threads per page is ridiculously low there, although a but better here, it makes trawling through the forums a chore (especially if you are logging on in the evening to see the threads during the day).

On the issue of server speed, I assumed index pages were static and periodically regenerated every so often? With a high traffic site like this, you don't want to be hitting the DB every time someone makes a index request.

/edit
I just counted up and found out MSE and HUKD are exactly the same! 20 threads per page.

You're lucky then. I see all threads in bold in my view except ones I have posted in which stay in standard font :?

What I really dislike is the search function in that "AND" acts as an "OR" so it is very hard to find things on this site.

e.g search advanced for :-

ghost AND recon

returns every thread with EITHER the word ghost OR recon in it. This is not how AND is meant to work!
[admin]#14
Use + instead of AND csiman. So +ghost +recon if you want ghost and recon. If you wanted ghost and not recon do +ghost -recon

What if you keep going through the pages until the last post was over 24 hours ago?

I think the logic is it tracks views/updated icon for 24 hours and then just considers everything viewed before that b/c it would explode if it tracked infinite views (it's held in a cookie I believe).

It used to do it but doesn't now, remember we spoke about it a few months ago?
