Technically, separate deal.

ALTHOUGH, if it's the same price everywhere then it becomes less of a "deal"... :)

Considering I put "The Hut et al" in my original thread title, I hoped that would be enough to cover LoveFilm, Asda, Currys, Dixons. But apparently it wasn't, and the same item at the same price was posted separately for Asda. I pointed out that I'd already posted and that the new Asda thread could be removed...but no. Apparently it was a valid thread as it's a separate retailer.

Two of my other threads have now been "spammed" - I do hope action will be taken against the users who have hit the spam button, as it was unwarranted. They were valid deals, for a valid product, from separate retailers. Posting them separately was okayed by a mod. :)
#4
I was one of the one's who hit the "Spam".

I now see that you posted these as a retaliation against the other thread, where it said Different Retailer, Different Deal, to prove a point.

I think you agree with me that allowing it is silly :)
#5
Yes, I do agree with you.

But for now, I'd like my three spammed threads reinstated, unless sufficient reason can be provided against their validity. :)

EDIT - they're back, thankyou.

Do Asda, the Hut, Lovefilm, etc. always have the same prices for things, or is there occasionally some discrepancy? If they are always the same, they should all be grouped together, and then this wouldn't be an issue.

Pennies difference normally. At least 3 of them will be the same at any one time. But unfortunately this means going forward there will have to be 5 threads per item.

Crazy, isn't it?!

Looks like you are fighting a losing battle with this one, BristolDeal... no-one seems to 'get' the point you are trying to make, and I think you might end up being the one to suffer from it all.... :-(

If the companies offer different cashback rates through different websites then that could be the deciding factor for some people.
#11
Oh more than likely, but I think it's a point worth making.

It could well be. Which is why going forward I'll personally make sure there are 5 threads each time, so people can make their own minds up. :)
#13
Can't we have them all posted and then the first post in each one links to a main thread to discuss the deal. That way the forum won't get repeatedly clogged up with continual bumps and the search etc will still work as normal and the deal can be given heat for each retailer etc.

Mods could lock the threads to stop people posting in anything other than the main one.

But that could be put within the one thread that covers all the similar retailers, couldn't it?
#15
It's worth pointing out that if you do create 5 threads on the same thing, then they're more likely to all get voted cold than one get voted hot...

Yes, that's another way around it. Be sure to put something a bit more basic than "et al" though, because that's not enough. :-D

But which retailer would it be listed under? For filtering purposes? Say someone's seen a great discount voucher for one site and wants to see what's being sold there...

It's tricky really.

Yes, it would make much more sense to just have a single thread from one of the retailers, wouldn't it?

Do my solution! Then the search / vouchers would still work as normal and the forum wouldn't get clogged up. All info about the deal would be kept to one thread so people can discuss it in one place and are more likely to get the answer they want.

Amend the system, so that you can specify more than one retailer

Search wouldn't work properly, vouchers would be a bit hit and miss too. If I had a voucher for one company it wouldn't come up during the search whereas if they're all posted then they would.
#22
Or create a new merchant called "The Hut Group"?

Probably not possible.

Would make the search awkward. I've never heard of the hut group but I've probably heard of some of the companies in it. ie I wouldn't know to search for the hut group rather than the individual companys.

But what if someone has a problem with an order from one of the companies and wants to ask for advice? :p

Sorry for being pedantic, but it's a complicated issue. I'm sticking up for the "multiple deals" thing here, but I don't like loads of threads on the same thing either and could fight both corners. I'm just pointing out that it's a difficult thing to decide. :)

Well it's

The Hut
Asda Entertainment
LoveFilm (the shop end of it)
Currys Entertainment
Dixons Entertainment

Basically The Hut is the "main" site and they run the sites for the other 4 retailers. They have the same products, same prices (95% of the time) and the same stock levels (once something goes out of stock on one, it goes out of stock on all). So if you had "The Hut Group" then it refers to all five "separate" companies.

Well like I said, they'd go to the main thread that all the others link to where all comments are to be made.

ie I ordered from Asda but it hasn't arrived, anyone receive an order from Asda???
#28
sigma
is there not a way to combine comments in duplicates to get around this, rather than just losing one set ?

I was going to post this seperately at some point, really annoys me when a thread comes along and gets some really useful comments/debate going, then it's removed rather than merged with the original. It's possible to merge it rather than just delete everyone's useful comments.

My way works better than multipe threads for this too actually. Imagine someone has a problem with the product, asks a question in the Asda thread but the person who knows the answer is keeping an eye on the Lovefilm thread? Much better to have them all in the same place so you're more likely to get the answers you need.

Well, if it's The Hut running it on behalf of other companies, rather than "sister sites" (independent brands under the same company), I'd say that you should probably just post for "The Hut".

A while ago, Woolworths (I think I'm right there) offered contract deals on their own site, but all of the deals were provided through one of the other websites by another retailer (I think it was e2save or Dial-a-Phone?). It clearly stated this on their website, so we only allowed deals from the main supplier.

That, of course, was when I first became a mod here so we're talking a couple of years back at least...

My personal view is that if "The Hut" owned an entirely separate company called "Really Really Cheap DVDs" or something then they should be allowed. BUT if they're just supplying on behalf of another company which they don't own then you should just stick to the original...

I don't pay too much attention so I wouldn't know these things... but would the deletion of "Woolworths Entertainment" and "Dixons Entertainment" and whatever they're called mean that any killer deals (that aren't listed on The Hut) are missed??
#31
What if you had a voucher or code for Woolworths entertainment and went searching for deals? If they're not posted under that but under the hut then you're not going to find them. I wouldn't have known to search for the hut rather than woolworths.

Do they issue voucher codes for these "operated by The Hut on behalf of Woolworths" sites?

Just asking. I know that "Orange Accessories" (which sells Orange's re-conditioned phones) is operated by someone else on their behalf, and they never issue discount codes or QuidCo.

Wouldn't have a clue mate, just seems to make sense to me that if we're going to list them all seperately (as it seems the current rules suggest) that we mearly list them and lock them pointing all comments/questions into a main discussion thread. This allows for everything to work as normal and the forum won't get clogged up. If there are vouchers etc then my system would still work.

Unless there is a better alternative.

Problem at the moment is site gets clogged up and people talking in 5 threads about the same deal.

Problem with the current solution is that if you ever go searching for woolworths entertainment, perhaps you have vouchers/codes then you won't find it, you'll need to search for the hut. Not sure how many people would know to, I certainly wouldn't've.

I suppose that's the question. Is it operated as a site which has special offers and stuff, or is it just there to improve Woolworths' range of stock and get them a bit of extra cash on the side?

Don't know mate! All I know is that the same deal 5 times doesn't help anyone, if we can get them listed in the best way and have all discussion in one thread then we're onto a winner.

Continuing with this theme, what do you put when Carphone Warehouse are doing an offer on an Orange phone? The SERVICE is provided by Orange, and Carphone warehouse are just a front. Reading the thread suggests that it is the service, rather than the front, marked as the retailer.

I'm not sure on the best way, but having 5 threads, with massively varying degrees of temperature, with different comments in each, and some posts duplicated 5 times across the threads, isn't the best way to do it, certainly at the useability level, and also at the webserver end, this forum is on the edge at the moment, increasing this load by so much will push it over

Carphone Warehouse send out the phones themselves...

With "Woolworths" and "Dixons" Entertainment sites, I suspect that anything you order is shipped by The Hut rather than Woolworths or Dixons and that they never actually see the product themselves.

See the difference?

I've only skimmed the thread, but there should be one deal IMO.

Cashback should be worked out, and the retailer with the best cashback should be listed. If I had seen these deals, I would have clicked SPAM too.
