Well you can view all of the SVP deals using the filters on the home page here anyway.

I actually think this is something built into the forum software to be honest and I don't know if Admin will be able to change it.
#2
anything can be changed for sure
but could be easier (only an option in the control panel) or harder (changing the code)

That's a completely different thing though. If someone mentions that SVP ripped them off or that their customer service was excellent or if they have a deal which isn't hot enough to warrant a thread to itself but is mentioned in reply to another offer then none of that shows up using the homepage filters.

There's also CD, AA, RAC, B&Q, BSM, cpc, Daz, ELC, Gap, HMV, MFI, Mx2, NTL, PSP, NUS & O2. That doesn't include handy 3 letter words to help narrow the search field down like "dvd player" brings up the same search as 'cd player' and so on.
#4
That's a good point Artemis, I think it would be very useful too...
#5
And Sex :p
#6
I noticed this when searching for answers in the birthday number hunt. A two character minimum would be much better
#7
Of course, you could get around it by typing *SVP* with the stars.
[admin]#8
As ducker points out you can do "svp*" and that will find anything with svp. I'm not sure if "*CD*" would work for a two letter, I doubt it. The issue is simply that the posts are indexed for search and indexing three and two letter words makes an absolutely massive and not particularly useful index. Look at the sentence above by duck, it would have to index "of", "you", "get", "it", "by", "the". Every one of those is irrelevant and not worth indexing. Basically indexing 2/3 letter words results in a massive index that isn't relevant.

You can get around this a bit with the * wildcard to get at those three letter words.

Yeah, i love this place but the 3 letter search limit is beginning to drive me crazy. I was searching for my friend "Sex And The City DVD Box Set" and of all those words i was only allowed "City" - Arrrggghh!!
[admin]#10
russ - use the wildcard trick. Try typing sex* into the search box and see what happens...
#11
Thanks admin that helps

PS :) I think you all do a great job - im not complaining :)
[admin]#12
Nah that's not complaining! I like it when people talk about what can be improved, it's the only way we'll make the site better :)

I came, scrolled down to the bottom and read that post first because it was at the top of my screen.

It does work though. :-)

Hi All,
Bit of a noob question perhaps,
I am trying to perform an exact phrase search for "acer asprie"
I have tried
*acer+aspire*
acer+aspire
*acer aspire*
But it always bring up all post posts with acer or aspire in it.

Any help would be most welcome.

Have a nice day:)

Search function not great here to be honest. Much easier to find the thing you need via searching via retailers. Have requested that all users have access to a favourites button that they can add items they may need later.
[admin]#16
Just thinking about that mrtootough - you know another thing you can try doing in the meantime is adding your own tag to any post. If you put mrtootough's deal as a tag on a post you could always just sort by that tag.
#17
Yeah noticed that there aren't that many tags being added to original posts.

It's at least a good idea to put the brand name of the product and the model number/name. That also brings them up in order of date posted too.

Did you tray Acer AND Aspire? That might give different results?
#19
vbulletin uses Boolean searching, so as Emma said use AND (OR and NOT should also work as well as parentheses).
#20
I was going to say Boolean but I couldn't remember if that was the right word and I didn't want to sound silly if it wasn't!

S'ok, it's not like anyone since the stone age has used it outside of a random maths lesson :)

(phpbb is the forum software of choice but I'm guessing this set up was customised to the front page?)

I dunno about that I prefer vbulletin boards but id love to see the search facility improved as I suspect the search code has been corrupted somewhere along the way during the heavy customiing of the vbulletin skin.
#23
sounds like the search function is being brought up again

how many more posts until it gets fixed? just wondering
[admin]#24
Well the search function is a built-in feature to vB so it's not something we can fix ourselves. If vB change code in an update then it would be fixed that way but it's not something we can do on our end.
[admin]#25
What do you think is broken fizzlewizzle? Using AND instead of + is going to be the same on all vB forums.

Hi admin thanks for getting back on this matter your hard work is very much appreciated.

I suspect that something must have been changed at some point in the search scripts. Thats very vague I know but I use various other vb boards and havn't encountered this problem.

Would it be possible to replace the existing search scripts with the latest ones from vb?

You pay an annual subscription for this vb forum right? Do they have anyone at customer support or in their help forums that could maybe help fix this?

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum

I would post a request on their forums myself but I think it would be alot better if it came from you plus you have access to all the code.

thanks again,

Sorry admin I thought I was posting in the other thread regarding search...

http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30505

From the screen dump ive posted there you can see its bringing back alot of false positives. You can see that its not until the 12th record that it actually shows what I search for, the term 'xbox' by title only and sorted by relevance.

I wasn't referring to anything about boolean sorry for the misunderstanding.
