Quite like the colours idea, that would be interesting :)

Eldini - you make some very considered suggestions and some of these have already been discussed in feedback.

The search function, expiring/unexpiring deals, spam/duplicate button have all been mentioned and admin has usually given a response to each.

Search - they're looking at it....
Expiring - I think this was too difficult to do technically
Spam/duplicate - they didn't want to add an extra button or change the existing one.......

I'm sure Admin will correct me if I have summarised these wrongly

That's good to hear, apologies for inadvertently repeating some suggestions then. As i've said before it's difficult to locate stuff on this site at times.

The main thing i really want is better categories, or at least a "computer game" category. It would make a huge difference to using the site.

And... what the hell, suddenly BBcode works... my original post the BBcode was disabled in so i took it out and replaced it with some capitals and brackets :/ lol

Hi Eldini. BBCode is disabled in the first post of every thread.

1. CHANGE THE DEFAULT SEARCH PARAMETERS
Make it so it's restricted to deals

When you do a search, all the categories come up on the right hand side and you can narrow them by section (e.g. deals). I think that's quite a handy option, and I use it a lot. :)

I use that option too, very handy.
i guess i figured it would be more useful for most people to have it set on that section by default, as well as having the results sorted by "the original post date", rather than "the last post date".

I'd guess that's where most of the search engine complaints originate from.

I can't find anything on this site, i've resorted to pointing google at it and using google to search just this site

I'll probably start doing that myself then, cheers for the suggestion.
It still wont help me browse the deals on computer games though :( which is the most frustrating part.
Especially when people could potentially put them in 2-3 of the current categories.

You can do that in Advanced Search.

5. OPTION TO VIEW MORE THAN just the top 5 hottest deals for the last day/week/month/alltime/particular categories

Will add that at some point thanks.

Don't think we'll be adding more categories though.

The search is a little bit different as of today, you might want to give it another shot.

Go on - you're dying to tell us what you've done :)

It does seem to give more relevant results if you use the simple search. At first glance I thought it was applying an implicit "and" if you put in more than one term eg Acer aspire one but I think its doing something more than that.....

Is this supposed to be a soft launch of the new search? If the search has been improved the announcement deserves its own thread....

better... but not quite there!...

http://hukd.garyrip.com/search is how we all want it :)

Feedback on search terms that don't return relevant results would be much appreciated.

Strictly speaking... this isn't a search term...

But when you do a search, it would be good that when you click "Not what your looking for?... Try advance search" then it would carry over the search term so that you do not have to retype it.

Umm... its pretty close to being there actually...

I don't have any terms to offer really... if really critical...

When i type in "boots meal deal" google search gives only boots results on the first page, hukd gives other merchants also, but a massive improvement, shame it could not be done sooner!

First result that came up is a 2 month old thread with no new replies.

The thread i was looking for was the 2 hour old "paper mario" one. searching for paper mario has the result on the first page, which is cool. :)

I do think the date/time part of the search needs to be weighed more heavily though.
Would it be ridiculous to sort them by price too, or maybe by heat? Those kind of searches would probably be exactly what people are looking for maybe?

I searched for "left 4 dead", had to go to the third page to find the cheapest current deal

http://www.hotukdeals.com/search?action=search&keywords=%22left+4+dead%22

which are:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/333884/left-4-dead-xbox-360-24-99-amazon/
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/342743/left-4-dead-xbox-360-24-99-brand-ne/

Although granted if you do restrict it just to the "deals" section they do show up much sooner.

I just posted a new deal for Left 4 Dead, so im not sure when that'll start showing up in the search results either, so i cant give feedback on how it handles brand new posts.

It seems to be an improvement, but im not sure by how much. Been too long since i used the old search.

Thanks for the improvements though, definitely.

==============================================

As for the categories... Real shame that new ones arent being added :(

How about some sort of "soft" category? where if certain words are mentioned in the description they're automatically added as tags?

That way we'll actually be able to browse computer game deals

Suggestion for the "soft category"/auto-tag words:

Xbox 360/360/Xbox = "Xbox 360" tag
PS3/playstation 3 = "PS3" tag
dvd = "dvd" tag... lol

Things like that, i think it's mostly the "entertainment" category which could use this system. Especially on items like computer games which often end up in other categories, such as computers/electronics. I just checked and they've even ended up in the "general deals" category.

Thanks for the responses btw, much appreciated.

Cheers for the rep, appreciated :)

Btw i've noticed that other people's requests for additional categories (which admins dont seem to want to add) could also be solved by this "auto-tagging" system.

I.e. the "eating out" category people requested, etc.

I could see this becoming the most useful feature of the site if implemented? please? :( lol

Also the sorting search results by heat would be awesome too lol.
