Assuming something similar isn't already in place, would you think about allowing long serving/members with a certain post count extra privileges, such as being able to use larger avatars?

If you agree, I was thinking about the post count required for such privileges to be set at 500 - Perfect number. :giggle:

I've posted on forums for FAR too long... It feels depressing to only be able to select crappy small avatars and nothing in my signature.

Ooooooo, don't get me started on signatures :-(

*I'm going to sulk, again*

He/she expressed his/her love for me, fully agreeing with everything said in the first post.

My other email had about 200 emails from HUKD - Only just discovered how to stop them! :p

I posted it about 5 mins after yours.

It basically went along the lines of :

"I mentioned about the sigs before, Its easy enough to set-up, So if someone has 500 or 1000 posts they can display a sig.

Also I wouldn't like to see bigger avi's because I wouldn't want to see them dancing all about the place! (Like certain .gif avatars!!"

Maybe It wasn't deleted and i'm starting to lose my marbles!

How did the person who dealt with you respond to your request?

Lots of forums do that sort of thing to motivate people to post more often. You never know, it might actually make HUKD even more active.

Can't see why the person/people in charge don't want to do, there shouldn't be that many people with 500-1000+ posts, most of this sites viewers don't actually post! :p

There wasn't much of a response apart from "Sigs aren't going to be coming back soon" and then there was talk of a end of May update, Although I don't think the sigs was part of that.

Thats the only probably with increase the size of Avatars though, No offense but I don't want to see a dancing avatar all over the place, It makes the text sitting next to it difficult to read and is a general pain.

It would be easy to set-up the sigs though, So certain groups (Flame throwers, Solar flares, Mods, Etc), Could display signatures (Like the Mods already do.)

Yay, I just became a Flame thrower! Go me!

It wouldn't cause too much strain on the forum if only 500+ members were allowed to have bigger avatars/banners...can't really see a good reason not to do what other forums do. The only place more avatar/sig restrivive coming to my mind is GameFAQs.

And, funnily enough, the reason I want bigger avatars/signatures enabled is because there's a gif I'd love to use. I'm sure you'll love gifs we're allowed bigger avatars...I'll make sure. :w00t:

But how many many forums have a member database this big?

By stopping everyone it eliminates the "Why haven't I got a sig but example has?".

I can understand the reasons for not doing it, But a lot of helpful sigs (like Steve's Ebay and quidco link) where stopped in the process.

You call this forum big? :?

http://forums.narutofan.com/

Double the number of members. Near enough no avatar or signature restrictions.

As I said before, many people who use HUKD don't actually register/post very often - Leechers. There should be some sort of reward system for people who don't just leech, people who contribute, which could be done easily be rewarding certain member groups with avatar/sig related upgrades.
#12
But there are problems with giving people rewards for higher post counts as well - you encourage people to post more to get those benefits and in many cases it can lead to quite a bit more 'noise' with many people adding fairly useless posts just to get a +1

Of course I would like to see more members contributing to the system rather than just benefitting from the deals but if you're going to use a carrot to get people to do that I think you'll find the additional posts are simply not going to be that useful.

Given the colossal size of the site, I think the signal to noise ratio is remarkably good on here and would like to see it stay that way.

Thats not a great example of how a forum should be run though, Ok they do have twice the amount of members but, Its completely silly when someone has a sig that nearly covers the length of the post, It took what felt like an age just to load one page, That couldn't possibly be implemented on a deals forum!!

I agree, Something that would encourage postings of good deals and not just leeching would be a good idea.

The internet term for what you described in your first paragraph would be spam.

Giving rewards would also inevitably lead to more posts, the bad side of those posts being spam. However, I don't feel spam will increase by a huge amount on this forum, with most people on here seemingly being 20+, leading to a more mature community.

Assuming the admin only allows sensible avatar/signature upgrades, there wouldn't be any real slowdown. Most people have AT LEAST BB connections these days...I'm sure they can handle a bigger avatar and reasonably sized signature image.

What connection do you have?

I do agree; members are allowed too much freedom on the forum I linked to. I was simply giving you an example of a forum with a much larger member list that doesn't restrict avatar/signature usage - You seemed amazed by the size of HUKD. :p

Good. So... Outside of avatar and signature upgrades, what sort of reward system would you be interested in seeing?

There are only two type of forum reward systems I know about: RPG (you get fake money/points from posting, spend them on your own personal RPG character) and avatar/signature/custom title rewards. Since only one type of reward system would work with this community...

Well there isn't much that can actually be done realistically, This forum mainly seems to be presented in a clean cut manner, So having massive sigs or Avi's would ruin that.

I used to like the Funny one liner sigs, But also the helpful links, That helped a lot of people and stopped some of the "What is quidco, Never heard of it, What is it" questions.

As for rewards, Its much the same, I'm sure its been discussed before but no ideas really hold water.

No, I wasn't referring to spam - I was meaning comments which are relevent to the topic but not particularly useful as compared to pure spam posts such as +1 or quoting someone's post and nothing else because they supposedly agree with it (the classic spam posts)

I have to say, your comments come across as incredibly naive - I've never found age to matter for people posting pointless comments and been on plenty of forums with a primarily 20+ audience which have poor signal to noise ratios.

On one particularly forum, the postcounts were out of control with people posting many times in a row to get their postcount up. The admin made the decision to remove all the postcounts in that area and remove the benefits for the high postcounts which transformed the forum entirely. It's not the only one I've seen the problem on and I don't want to see it here.

The simple fact is that if people are going to make useful posts which contribute to the forum they shouldn't need anything other than their own motivation. If rewards are introduced, the users currently not posting that much are not going to try and improve the quality of their posts, they're simple going to post more for the sake of it which is not good. Some of the threads in the Misc forum are starting to get unnecessarily long in my opinion and if people are actively encouraged to go for higher postcounts the net effect is going to be degradation of the forum.

Most of my 5000 posts are in the Weekend Picture threads, I'm not at all bothered if those old threads are deleted and Hence my post count would go down.

My sole intention was never just to get a high post count, I just got chatting to those on the thread, But it doesn't take anything from other useful members who've got their 5000 from pure helpful posts and deals.

I've posted a few deals and would like to think i've been helpful to.

I think a few of us are guilty as charged with those threads. If they were deleted i'd be down to about 3000. :giggle:

I personally don't think post count really counts for much, it doesn't matter if you've posted 10 times or 10,000. The forums are different things for different people.

Sorry that's not what I was implying - I think if people were being encouraged to post and get their postcount up it would push the forum over the edge. I think it works extremely well right now, much better than I would expect for such a huge community and don't want to see it change for the worse.

The best system I've seen for encouraging useful posts is the 'Thanks' system on Avforums.com (and others) - at the bottom right of each post, there is a thanks button. When clicked, your username is added to the row along the bottom of the post which shows all the other people that have clicked thanks. Below your avatar it shows how many thanks you have given out and how many received.

I think this system works well for many reasons, as people can see who is giving the thanks it quickly shows if two people are exchanging 'thanks' to get their numbers up (often done with rep). Also it shows if people are giving out thanks or not at all, I find it's quite rewarding to get thanks from people below my name.
