A relative newbie posted it, hothothot replied and several posts later it was still not clear to me if it was self-promo or not, so i clicked (as requested when not sure) the expired and spam buttons and posted to leave it be and let a mod decided; which they did cos the thread has gone.

When you click the SPAM button, it automatically deletes the thread (If enough people click it or you have enough 'Power' to do it yourself) The mods don't delete it if this is the case....

I think you've told me this before  so thanks again :) but what is unclear now to me at least is when should we decide it is spam?

I know some REALLY are obvious, but it's becoming less clear in light of recent events :-(

just let the mods decide :)

EDIT: i didnt click any buttins when that deal came up, spam, bad post etc. But i knew as soon as the person said its my friends site, and how he knew the code and that the site had legal issues it had a high posibility of being self promo

But we are a community. What is the point then of a spam button? We are asked to help police the site cos tbh, it's a big site now and the mods have enough to do so we have the facilities to help but not sure how to use them....

perhaps it's just me, again :?

The process is that we check out whatever details we have and make a decision based on that. We also contact the member to ask which to be honest is not a particularly useful thing but it's only polite and gives the member an opportunity to let us know honestly.

The point is that if there is self-interest we want them to send it to us to review as we don't want the forums flooded with nonsense. If there's a genuinely good deal of course we want anyone to let us know. That's why we have the contact us form and the warning on the submit deal page.

There's a process there for anyone with self-interest to get a genuinely good offer posted with no problems.

Spam button is there for blatant spam or anything that the community decides is spam or unwanted. This could be something like "free ipods!!" or even a post that isn't a Hot Deal (like people posting requests in Hot Deals).

maybe you could just hit bad post button and let the mods decide, then you would be doing your bit for the community :)

I think the post which lead to self promotion was removed, So it wouldn't be on the thread in question, So you won't find anything out of the ordinary now!

Yeah, there's no harm in spamming a deal if you think there's something up with it because we can always move it back if we don't think it's spam.

Also, it'd help us IMMENSELY if you could also click on the http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/custom_buttons/report.gif button underneath the username/avatar of the poster over on the left hand side and supply us with a reason. That emails all of the mods your reason so we'll be able to get the the bottom of it much more quickly... in some cases the members spam deals and it isn't entirely obvious why.

And in response to the beginning of the thread, yes the moderators DO have ways and means of "checking out" users, posts and companies. Some of these are entirely obvious and are often reflected in the style of the post, but there are more technical ways too.

If the users knew how we checked users and made decisions based on the info that we are able to gather then I can guarantee that all of the users would agree with whatever decisions are made surrounding a post. Unfortunately, if we did tell you then the spammers would find their way around these checks, meaning that they would be pretty useless to us...

Please keep comments on topic or yes they will be removed. This forum is here for serious discussion and while we appreciate the banter and so forth it would be better suited to another forum.

I still think Self promo should be allowed as long as its a deal. Isn't the point of here to post deals?

Depends if there is self gain from it, If someone posts a deal with Currys digital for example and they get so much money per sale, Than that IMO is wrong, Nobody else gains from posting deals. (Apart from HUKD, But it wouldn't be here if it couldn't afford to run).

Can you imagine what this forum would be like if we allowed merchants to post deals? We allow them to submit offers through the contact us link, and if they are genuinely good offers, and not some marketing spiel, they will be posted.

Without self promotion, HotUKDeals has remained spam free for three years. If merchants were posting their own deals, the forums would be a mess and a mass of spam.

I've posted 3 deals using the contact Admin method so far and it more than meets my needs.

I'm a web designer at an electronic retailer and am privileged to hear about some of the potentially good deals that are coming in. I make no profit from sales so it makes no difference to me who buys the stuff. I’ve had 1 deal posted out of the 3 I’ve raised over the past few months, which is better than nothing.

What I have realised is that working in marketing your trained to believe everything is a good deal so you can promote it properly. That mindset isn’t really suitable in an end user based forum and you would just end up offering mediocre deals. I’m happy leaving it up to who ever to decide on what deals are suitable.

I do however miss the chance to be praised for finding good deals!

Why? Once allowed are they not posted under your username :?

No sassie, a mod posts them. @ BerthaBlue - you are permitted to post deals for other companies... just not yours.

Could they not be posted by a mod with credit to the finder :?

Hmm I'd agree, Does seem unfair for the credit to go to someone else.

Even if its a quick "Thanks to BerthaBlue who works at ...... for the heads up..."
