You could say this for all the video games and dvds though, you would need to have sub sections for everything(like AV forums) or nothing at all

the only way you can do it i think is by using customise and adding everything apart from clothing

Yes you can. You can set up a custom tab that displays all FS/FT items without the "clothes" topic.

is that permanent? or will i have to do it again when i clear cookies/cache etc

its permamnent as long as you only view in custom i think, so if you view under discussed or new then the custom view isnt there

dont you have to add all the others and leave clothes out, seems along way to go around ommitting one topic

no its done so you only add what you want, not omit what you dont want.
So for example usually if you only want to omit say one or two topics would you really set up the custom feature? many would not.
Thus to be selective you add what you want to view.

exactly, wouldnt it be quicker to omit what you dont want, if i dont want to see clothes i have to add all the others rather than omit one

but like i said what about if someone only wants custom for say two topics? then with your system they would have to unselect everything they dont want.
So either way it is going to be easier for one group of people and harder for the others.

no, because you have to select everything in the 1st place, you select what you want to view, surely it would make more sense to have everything included, then to customise you untick what you dont want

oh well it makes sense to me, why on earth would someone want to delete half the site from viewing, more likely to just want to omit the odd thing

It only takes a minute or two to set up. There's not that many other topics.

I think that it's more designed so you can filter things that DO interest you, rather than filter out the things that DON'T.

I suppose that an easy fix would be a button on the custom page that lets you "add all" of the topics in one go, and then you can remove as you like...

but to use customise you have to add everything you want to view, yes, so if i want to view all forums and all topics apart from clothing, i have to go through and add every forum and every topic apart from clothing yeah? or am i missing something

surely customise should start with the entire site, and filter out, not start with nothing and add

You're not missing anything. In the time it takes me to write this short para, I could have amended the Custom tab to incorporate All items. Really does only take a minute or two at most.
