Something like a link to this is a good idea.

Link

Nice thought...there are children sleeping amongst the dead bodies, i can't imagine how it must feel to be in that situation.
[mod]#3
They don't do charity links on here as they are not allowed. Would be nice though. :)
#4
You can text HELP to 61192 to donate.
Costs £1 + normal sms cost

Why wouldn't it be allowed? even if it's only a week?
The DEC is an umbrella charity so i can't see anything wrong with it.

100 percent in agreement with you-the horrors in haiti are beyond belief-really cant see what harm a link to dec appeal would do.

I assume there are various causes to donate to? Can someone make a brief list of five or so with reasons why they are the better ones (like low administration fees etc). Just seems there is a lot of donation abuse that goes on in these tragedies where a lot of the money never really makes it to the cause we are trying to help.

Bad idea in my opinion

So many worthy charities it should be up to people to make their own decisions, their money after all

(no hate)

Yes, as i stated in my post, i have provided a link to the DEC which is from the DEC's homepage as you can see here

Or alternatively a different company is also fine such as Oxfam here

Both companies are very reputable. And i would doubt that any abuse would occur in a charity such as those.
A lot of the scams that occur during times of tragedy are from people creating either scam Email's or scam websites, where in both cases, these are quite easy to identify as a phony.

Prefer to see none here personally. Easy enough to find these sites if you wish to donate. How many countless charities/appeals are ongoing? Which ones are worthy? Nothing against charities, I have and do give to some already, but not what I come to HUKD for.
#11
Cant see why this is needed, there are numerous ways to donate their money without having it dominating this site-there is enough on here already
#12
i dont know if there is any need tbh although if it were to happen i think the extreme natural disasters, freak occurences would be the 1's i would suggest seeing as we are all partly to blame with global warming being a worldwide problem:)

If it's just a link on the side of the page, it's not going to cause an inconvenience to your browsing. This is not your usual cancer research or homeless people situation, this is a very serious natural disaster, and the response needs to be treated like one.

This is just to show people the link to donate and also to encourage people to donate through them seeing the link.

This is an extreme natural disaster. almost 100,000 people have died and the area is destroyed along with peoples lives. I believe it should be integrated.
Humans causing global warming is a scam by the way.

Any update on a consideration?
So far i've seen this implemented on so many websites such as Yahoo, Argos etc
I think the same should apply for a widely advertised site like this, so that lives can be helped or saved.

I think it would be a good idea. I know I come to this site to save money but I often spend money on stuff I don't need or even WANT that much! This disaster is so great....so many lives lost and horrendous suffering going on that I can't believe anyone would begrudge putting at least a quid in the pot! Can't we do it?
#19
Terrible tradgedy, puts everything in my life firmly in perspective (was probably moaning about some minor irrelevance at work whilst the initial quake hit) but not needed here on this site IMO. If you want to donate, then donate...........

Thankyou for the link
I totally agree with you
Is this a reputable organisation?

Exactly!
I can't believe people cannot spare £5
Surely if they buy one less bottle of alcohol or eat out once less during a month, they can put the money towards helping people desperately in need of help!

Yes the DEC has been going for years. They was probably the biggest charity when the Asian Tsunami struck a few years ago and raised tens of millions.
So they will be fine to donate to.
But like i said, it does not matter what charity gets linked, as long as there is something on the main page then i would be happy.
#23
So, ADMIN, what do you think? Would it really hurt to have a link put up?
#24
I don't think it is a good idea. There is already a lot of sources that tell people how to donate, TV, radio etc.

Put a link up for Haiti, and then you need one for every other disaster. Plus, people come on this site to save money, not to give it away!

This isn't just your average disaster. This is hundreds of thousands of dead people. Millions of people who's lives have been destroyed.
An entire country which was in poverty before, in ruins now.
This NEEDS advertising. Unless you don't care about them.
A lot of people don't know where to donate, or haven't thought about it much. This could help save lives.
How can one tiny link hurt anything?

If someone does this rather than keep asking then a link may be allowed : :)

Because its setting a precedent. Do it for one, then the next one and the one after that. In between, hell breaks lose and someone sulks because the site didn't take "theirs" on.

There have been numerous requests before. The stance is the same.

Whilst your enthusiasm is to be admired, your tactics (by suggesting no one cares and no one knows how to donate without a link) is less impressive.

I'm not suggesting we do this for every time something bad happens.
I'm just asking for this event only, and if there are any other very extreme disasters in the future then i will suggest the same.

Admin hasn't been online for like 2 days, that's why.

I've been on so many websites, Yahoo, AOL, Argos, Google, and many more
And they all have links to where you can donate.

Why can't this website? This website is not as big as the above websites but can't put in a link?
[mod]#29
I dont see the problem here. If people want to donate, they can. If they dont want to, they wont.

As for what is worthy, surely a charity is better than no charity.

To be brutally honest, not really, no, i don't care about them.:w00t:

It's just some place that i've never heard of before. There's issues closer to home that need dealing with, like helping friends and family, people you actually know.

I don't like your mind setting. but im not going to stray off topic here.
You are not getting forced to donate, its just an option. You could just scroll past if it has no effect on you.

That's fair enough, i know it's not a popular viewpoint, but i'm not scared to say it.

Cool.....trolling a natural disaster wih around 200,000 dead atm and 100's of thousands injured and more likely going to die......

i suppose you would never expect "strangers" to help you or your family either:roll: but i suspect you do so on a regular basis....irony?

Why not change your avatar to something to attract attention and stick a link in your location?

I can tell you with 100% certainty, it works.

Something is better than nothing.

Looks like that may be the only option. I must admit I can't believe the attitude of some on here. Even ADMIN....you run this very large site... couldn't you look into the best charity to donate to? Wouldn't you like to do something in the name of your website? This earthquake has devasted peoples lives!
#36
I'm all for donating to charities etc and have great sympathy for the victims of this latest disaster but how is this any more needy than say a cancer charity or whatever other illness or event has affected the lives of many. Were would admin draw the line?

still not happened despite all the blustering.

There are many charities one is not any more deserving than another.

so how come only some and not all have official days of rememberance, fund raising?

btw this is a natural disaster.....people wont still be fund raising for this appeal in 20 years time unlike some
#39
people start getting agitated because nothing has been implemented, the Admin of this site does not have to promote charity in anyway.

Yes its a natural disaster, and there will always be more to come, I think Guvs post sums it up nicely, once you start promoting a charity or fundraiser everyone gets on the bandwagon

in b4 called a troll for expressing opinions

i think the difference is this appeal is actually going to make a diference now.........we arent talking about turning the site into some british legion/cancer charity fund which is constantly on going

we are talking about natural disasters which we are all contributing to with mass comsumerism and global footprints/warming etc especially on a shopping site which is what this primarily is.......this gives people a chance to donate a few pence or pounds and have a positive effect

i really dont understand the arguments comparing this kind of thing with the sort of charities i have mentioned....this is like a flash fund/appeal where small donations can have an almost instant effect
