Please continue to report posts where you feel that the tags aren't appropriate.

humour is one thing though...but i mean really "unnecessary tags" repeatedly posting the same tag over and over for no reason etc.

Think its pretty obvious who it is and yes, its the same condescending trademark if you are refering to what I think you are.

Strangely, when you added a humourous tag I seem to recall you got a yellow card for it. In the same thread, I got hit with a 3 day suspension. What I added was a tag with the exact description of the thread. Go figure!

Its a level playing field out there. NOT.

exactly guv! I'm a bit sick of seeing these tags added and yes I'm sure most people will know exactly who it is without me having to name and shame.
#5
mods are on top of it, they have suspended people before for editing tags..lol.
#6
I agree I saw a particularly nasty one added on Sunday night which I think was reported - there is a difference between humour and personal attacks IMO

yeah tell me about it, you even put "serious thread" in the tags, and people still abuse it, good too sea the mods laying down the law though.

guv
If someone has posted a tag that is nasty, then it deserves to be pulled and something done. No question on that. What Bella is referring to here is disguised "helpful" tags, which are nothing more than patronising to the OP. Not a problem in itself (though not nice or clever) - but being repeatedly done, is taking the pee.

may I dare say the tags in question are quite...erm...."generic" or sometimes someone will add "another 'blank' thread". I think it is quite insulting to do it over and over again.

edit...I notice that some of these generic tags have just been changed to numbers?
#9
guv
That in itself is abusing tags IMHO.

There is nothing serious about pretty much every thread you make.

they are.

bellabonkers

i sea wat u did there.

abusing tags...serious stuff
#11
guv
Well at least they no longer say "yet another........."

As that (suspected member) would say "if you have a problem with the thread, use the report button". I guess the truth is, there is no problem - so just use the tags to patronise instead. Bullying by stealth!

am I the only one that sees the irony in that?

I used to be of the live and let live mentality but recently have taken to reporting, quite sad that I have to really.
I guess I shall have to just continue hitting report....Perhaps the mods should take heed in this and have a quite word with people that over abuse tags so that I can report less then there would be less for the mods to deal with.

Mods - you know it makes sense.

You know full well who.

Is there any particular reason you're trolling in this thread? Touch of guilt perhaps?

Don't suppose it was you by any chance that added the "another tag thread" in the tags?

we shall sea.

Sorry, that was me, couldn't help myself :whistling:
#15
Yeah was meant as a joke, a bit childish but not meant to be offensive/patronising :)
#16
guv
No offence taken..... but if you kept doing it....... you get the picture I think! (Which is what Bella's point is - I think!)

Indeed it is, If it came to you posting something like that over and over it would become quite patronising. But i see the irony in you adding that as it's one of the kind of tags im getting at :)
I'm quite happy to point out that the tag you added was discussed via pm and that I found it ok. I don't wish for you to get into any bother over it :)
#17
lol @ how this turned out.

yeah jah brah, you really shouldn't be editing the tags, its harder for people to use the search function. btw i didn't find it offensive/patronising :)

Yet you found "another BG1 thread" to be patronising/offensive? Maybe you could explain why?

its all relative

You don't "search" for tags though. That's the point... you look for other items which have been tagged in the same group as the item you're looking at. :)

Sorry to jump in, but I've never really know what tags were. So DM2, they are a bit like topics in that if you click on a tag that says, for example, XBOX360 you'll get a list of all threads with that same tag. But not say XBOX. SO it seems quite important to actually have a recognised set of standard tags so that things are actually grouped together & not spread about over different variations.

Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick, but I've honestly wondered what they were used for etc, thanks :)

EDIT : yes I get it now, & understand what happens when you click a tag. On this thread in tags click < tags > & you get a list of the 11 other threads that have < tags > in the tag line. There are 2 threads with tags. So it's not a search tool but rather a grouping one

Think you are underestimating how much more useful tags would be and worthwhile to use if you could search for them... Or even look through an A-Z list of them. If that facility was added the tags system would be far more worthwhile and IMO less an opportunity for abuse :)
[mod]#26
guv
Correct.

You just click on the tag you want to search and it will bring up all threads with that tag.

Would it not be a good idea then to have some sort of guidance thread with the more common tags listed ? eg for XBOX360 you could have

XBOX360
XBOX360s
XBOX 360
XBOX
360 etc

& there must be loads of other common ones which could potentially have numerous variations which would mean you'd have to tag with every common combination to try & ensure it was grouped correctly. Same goes for PS3s etc. Could we not have a simple list of the main ones in the help thread eg
XBOX360
PS2
DVD
if you get my drift ?

(& Guv your new eyes are freaking me out a bit :w00t: )

EDIT basically the same as what jah128 said above (must type faster #2)

But, say you have someone, or a few people, who regularly posts Xbox Games, you could persuade them to tag their deals with "XBox". Or, you could do it and encourage others to in threads.

I tend to tag all of my mobile deals with as many variant tags as possible. Go and take a look at one and you'll see what I mean. :)

A tag cloud would be ridiculously useful.

That's what I'm saying, we could tag them, but we could potentially have as many variations, so an actual post with the recommended tag wording would be really useful for all concerned & would quickly be copied as standard terminology (big word for this late at night :))

EDIT : If tags could be selected from a drop down list the same way as merchants / vouchers are now - filtered each time you add a letter. If it works in merchant / voucher search why not adopt same process for tags ?

guv
New? Its always been like that! U insinuating Ive got halloween eyes!!!:p

Thought you had lol - it's not the blinking it's that stare at the end - help ;-)

Yeah, thats sort of my point

The possibilities of tags is woefully under-used, you must see that the facility to directly search tags and bring up a list would be useful (not to mention a simple bit of code, given similar look-ups already exist in the codebase for the site).
#31
I feel the need to Bump this thread as one again the issue of tags has arisen.
It would be nice if members respected the tag facility and didn't abuse it by adding inappropriate tags. Or as some members seem to their own "coded" tags. I don't understand the need for this whatsoever

There is nothing wrong with inoffensive tags for personal use - its what they are for. Read the original thread: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/40892/how-to-use-tags-what-are-they-for-a/

Particularly this bit:

So what is a real world example? Really the limit is only your imagination in how to use these. As tags are open to anyone you can tag any deal with any tag you want, thus building you own deal relationships. You could make a tag "Admin mum" and then give that RSS feed to your mom so that any deal you see that you thought of interest to your mum you would tag "Admin mum" and presto it would show in her RSS feed. Or you can use them to make ad-hoc deal groups in the forum.
...

So how do you apply this? Well for personal use use whatever tags you want in whatever way you can think of! If you want to start a group around a certain tag then mention that in your post so that others know to use that tag when they post a deal. So if you wanted to get a group of people hunting down cheap n64 deals, put a tag in like "n64" and then ask any other interested people to do so also when they post their deals.

If they are offensive or a directed attack they obviously aren't allowed, much as they wouldn't be in a post, but otherwise they are fine. :)
[mod]#33
There in no problem with personalised tags as long as they are not offensive. It is simply a way for a user to tag selected threads & then view them as a group. The search facility doesn't use the tag system as yet
#34
Great post Jah128, thanks for that didn't sea it before. I slowly sea why you was on LOM top 5 list.

Good post too Sigma for the reiteration of Jah128 post.

I see.

So the personalised tags that have been added to this thread (and previously pointed out) are fine then are they?

Condescending tags are ok as well then? "Yet another ....." is as patronising as it gets. I've noticed these get cleaned up before - but still they occur.

When you clean them, do you not inform the person to stop doing it?

Personalised tags are okay, but regarding offensive tags I've checked & warnings / infractions will be given depending upon nature & frequency of offensive tags.
#36
I was given an infraction for ONCE adding a tag saying "men lie" thats a tag I liked to add, and no offensive words were ever used. perhaps in light of that my infraction should be lifted?

ill take this one Sigma.

yes bella no offensive words were used, but im sure the tag word has a direct connection to the context inside the thread, and and im going to assume correctly that the thread upset you in some way so you thought you would get even with a tag such as "men lie", hence the infraction.

The mods on here now what there doing, the site is ever growing and getting better each day.

Well I guess it highlights the tag problem rather well as these are exactly the sort of tags that shouldn't be there. I assume the person who is adding them can be tracked and that they can be removed but it seems that's not happening properly.

You can find that out yourself via a quirk in the system - use text-only view, if you click on the tag, then on the page of results click the username of the thread started of the relevant thread - it will direct to the user who added the tag rather than the OP
