Hello Boydent,

Even if there is enough information for consumers they will find it hard to fix there computers because it might be to complicated for them.

Someone advising them how to fix it would be easier for them.

I have done loads of things on my own, with the help and patience of people on forums like these that a couple of years ago i would have paid hundreds to get done or basically gone without, forums like this and many others help people out, i would never attempt to do something i didnt feel was possible or if i bodged it would cost me alot of money, but alot of things can be done by ourselves with a little help and patience from others, so a help board on anything is a thumbs up from me

I find my car hard to fix, can i have a mechanic forum? I maintain my stance, their are enough forums out there for PC technical help.

I do accept comments from Jenny that she and i would imagine others find it easier to ask here, and that's great and i would not ask folks not to ask for help but sometimes and this is not PC related per sa, folks are bleeding lazy at times. If they stick the error into google, chances are you'll find summat in laymans terms, quicker and with less typin' than it takes to post a question.

Perhaps that's just my take on it.

The thing is, i'd suggest and would contribute happily to a mini knowledge base of comments faults but folks would ignore the help, stickies and still just ask questions. I see this enough on the streaming football forum i am an active member on and it does my 'ead in.

If you are posting with noms de plume H4XR, then that really is out of line

I'd say not to bother, since if anything, people should be dissuaded from asking for help on this forum. There's a few of people who are good, but overall from what I've seen, the standard is atrocious, and more liable to do harm than good.

There was a thread the other day that was an example of how bad this place can. Someone had an issue where their system wasn't powering up properly, and turning itself off after four seconds. The replies went:

"Sounds like thermal compound, or a fan's disconnected"
"Overheating?"
"Power supply"
"I agree, power supply"

- And that is more or less word-for-word. At the time I read it, there was one guy (CSIMan, I believe his name was), who gave a helpful response, but the rest was, as you can see, contradictory ******** with little or no justification, and no help at all.

People here don't seem understand troubleshooting. They don't seem to grasp the idea of gathering information, fault-finding, diagnosis, ruling-out, or ruling-in, and seem to go for a 'fix' more or less at random, based on something vaguely similar that happened to them in the past or that happened to a friend or that they read about in Computer Active, without any sort of rational thought going into it. I've no doubt that it does get positive results sometimes, but then, so does guessing "B" as the answer to every question in a multiple-choice exam. The trouble arises in that each wrong guess can potentially cost a hefty wad of cash and several more days of downtime, which makes this sort of thoughtless guessing simply inexcusible in my view. I'm not sure why it should be encouraged.

Anyway, yeah, rant over. There are some people who are recognisably good, and I don't mean them in the above. Everyone else, I do appreciate that they're trying to do good, but they're just too trigger-happy with the Submit Reply button to be helpful. I know I'm going to be flamed to oblivion for this post, and probably banned for it too, but if it serves to make people think more about what they're writing and suggesting, think through things more thoroughly, and ultimately become better techs, it's worth it.
