If you're struggling, use inverted commas- ie "Vostro 1500"
#2
there was a post for vostro 1500 with 8400m gs,i think by mike t but i cant find it,could some link to the thread please.

think it was £286

Actually it's probably not that one.

Like i say type +vostro in and go through the list, there's a lot by miket on there.
#5
Or search for +vostro +1500 << should work fine!
banned#6
Apparently there was an uproar by members as no-one liked the date order sequence and we all wanted a completely random sequence ;)
#7
Your lucky...I go through all that, Then find the post has been removed.
#8
i dont want to advance search and fill in 15 boxes just to find one post.

You don't have to fill in all the fields. Obviously, the more information you submit the better the results will be though.

Not sure I totally agree with that Saint.
In my experience if you pick out the keyword or unique word for what you are searching for it usually returns what your after.

In the example of what the OP wanted in this thread I just used +vostro and it returned the right product although as Emma said typing +vostro +1500 might have narrowed it down a bit more

I have found that the more words you put into the search box the more chance you have of confusing it ?
Maybe it's just me but until I started doing the above I was having terrible trouble finding anything. I think it was Emma actually that suggested just using one or two words.

Trial and error to some degree I suppose. :)

I am not talking about filling the "Keyword" box with as much information as possible,(I use between one and three) I am saying that filling in as many fields(Forum, topic member etc) as possible yields better returns.

I have very few problems searching for anything on here. I am not hampered by any knowledge of other search engines, so that may be to my benefit.
#11
I don't have many problems with the search engine here. I think half the trouble is that people are a bit lazy and don't want to have to use it properly, they just want to bung a word in and have the result they're looking for at the top of page one.

The "+" is invaluable though, I never do a search without it. I use Advanced Search 99% of the time too. What's better - to spend 10 minutes searching through pages of deals because you put one word in the main search box, or to spend 2 minutes doing a proper search and getting the thread you want within seconds? You get what you give. ;-)

So do you like the sequence results come back in? I'm still trying to find one of these hoardes of 'imaginary' people who complained when it used to be in date order. :?

The sequence is generally irrelevant - by the time I've put in the right criteria, there are normally only 3 or 4 results returned anyway. :)
#14
The search is awful.... It would be so much easier for results to be in date order
#15
Agreed, the search was the main thing that broke in the re-design.

Yeah - the mods have gone decidedly quiet on this subject

Still awaiting someone to say they prefer the current sequence to date order sequence.............

could be a long wait :-D

I believe it was in the massive thread which was started at the time of the update - I have no way to search inside a thread... so not sure.

But the search function by default searches inside a thread...................

Can we not have a vote thread where we select either date sequence order or relevancy :w00t: order?
[admin]#20
We're working on making it better everyone. It's not as easy as it looks to be honest. There is a balance between date and relevancy. We have turned up the date importance on the relevancy algorithm and I think we will try and add + by default to terms.
#21
yer its terrible - would save a lot of mods time deleting dupe deals if the engine worked proper

It's not just that Dan, a lot of people don't even bother searching at all, I think.

I understand that, but you could have a points system for warnings. For people who post dupe threads give 1 point then if they hit 3 within say a 3 month time period they are suspended for a week, something like that. Obviously only when the search is fixed. That would surely cut down the work for you all?

Why not just set it to default vbulletin settings as search seems to work pretty well on all other vbulletin forums I've used.

But nobody is interested in the relevancy aspect. We just want strict date order. Surely it doesnt need an alogorithm at all for selecting rows from a table using one field in the results sequence :?
#25
What's wrong with the vbulletin built-in search engine anyway? It seems to work perfectly fine on other boards.
#26
We originally started with what vbulletin uses for their search, but there were complaints that it was showing threads that were too old, and sometimes people even said it was "random" because the results weren't ordered by date. If something is ordered by date, then it isn't going to show you the most relevant results for your search, and alternatively if something is ordered purely by what was most relevant to your search, it isn't going to be in any kind of date order.

Conceptually, it is easy to imagine what you are going to search for and what results you want back, but its a tough go making a machine imagine it for you, your friends, your enemies, and everyone in between. I think we can work through it though with feedback from both date people and relevancy people, and people who just want what they are looking for. Right now we are using a mix of date and relevancy that can definitely be improved on, and it will be.

Maybe the results should show both the date and relevancy, and give the end user the option of sorting the list in either way...

Not entirely sure what you mean here, if you're just using a modified version of vbulletin shouldn't the search module be the same as that used on all other VB boards?

I have no idea what you are on about here. If you search then it should search using the search terms you entered and return the results in date order. Its quite simple really.

Who are these 'relevancy' people? I have yet to hear anyone say they want the sequence in relevancy order (aka random!). EVERY other forum I go on manages to search properly. I just cant figure out why the search on this site is so diabolical.

its not rocket science!

select * from table where title_field contains search_string or thread contains search_string order by date_last_posted

I must admit I am finding it rather hard to understand this relevancy bit.
Surely in the majority of searches the most recent post would be the most relevant anyway ?

There are always going to be exceptions I suppose but are there that many to warrant using this relevancy/date formula ?
Is it just the thread title and the Opening Post that gets searched or the title and every post in the thread ? I suppose if it's the latter that would make a vast difference ?

Please remember I am just a regular member and not knowledgeable at all with the technical side. I may well be posting a load of rubbish here. Forgive me if that's the case.

I'm not too fussed about the search engine going through the entire thread either. just the title and original OP post would suffice. Would be nice to have a tick box you can select if you want to search entire threads.

I JUST WANT IT IN DATE ORDER lol :-D

I would have thought an option in advanced search would be the place for searching the whole thread ?

Hi,
I hope that I can help improve the use ability of the Hotukdeals website with the following suggestion.

I am an IT development consultant. I've been building, producing and project managing websites of all shapes and sizes for about 10 years.

Can we have search by date and perhaps most significantly can we have search by temperature order. The search by temperature could be constrained by a date range.

For example a search for
All Tesco (Merchant) Deals that were posted in the last two weeks (between Date 1 and Date 2) that have not expired (Status) listed in order by temperature or date (Criteria)

Relevance isn't down to algorithms it's down to the user's requirements.

It's not cutting edge stuff. Stick the fields in a database and add some filters.

KISS

It's still awful, it's such a fundamental part of the site I'm absolutely amazed it hasn't been a priority to get fixed.

Can someone please help me find the Virtua Tennis thread from yesterday please? And let me know exactly what you typed to find it ;_;

Cheers
