To be honest Iom-Rf i dont mind it, it really doesnt bother me if its only used now and again
Altho using it in about every word does take the biscuit

its lazy if you ask me.. we have a great language so use it .. this is not a mobile phone its web site and your not paying for the post, plus having read the news today some employers are helping staff with basic maths and english.. I wonder why.. text speak sucks :x
[helper]#4
Agree with Iom - really really grates on me.....

Maybe you should adopt the attitude that if they can't be bothered to type fully then you should not bother responding or helping.....

It just seems like the person just can't be arsed to write properly, If there was 2 posts side by side, Same sentences/words, One with text speak, The other just normal English, I'd prefer the normal for ease of reading.

Whenever I text people I write texts properly, Takes me all of 2 mins more, But is so much easier to read!
[mod]#6
Forum rules state text speak is not allowed...........and it drives me nuts when people use it. I just come out of the thread if someone can't type English.

But then again, it's probably the best grasp of English they can manage. :giggle:

I believe that people should try to stay away from using it, but its not the end of the world if the odd person does:thumbsup:

Thats totally true, About 6 years ago when I got my first mobile, I actually did use text speak "because it was quicker" and true enough it steadily started creeping into my normal writing, I'd find myself writing "2" instead of "two" and "u" instead of "you" etc.

I got so fed up of getting muddled I stopped and just wrote properly!! :)

There is one person in particular that uses text speak all the time, Seems a really helpful bloke, Helps people in misc, But It'd be so much nicer to read in proper English and I'm sure i'm not the only one.

Even when selling stuff people use text speak, It actually puts me off buying from them, Because if they can't be arsed to spell, What are they like sending stuff, Do they look after the Game, Phone, Cd etc or can't they be arsed with that either?

A couple of mods use "Pls" instead of "please", Now I realise they don't have all the time in the world, But its just as easy to type please, All of an extra 3 letters it is worth it!

Thats grammar, A totally different matter entirely.

Whats the policy on text speak?

I personally find it very irritating, It takes all of a millisecond to type a proper word so its at least readable. (My spelling is awful, But I'm sure its a damn lot easier to read! :p ).

ROTFLMAO. I agree m8 - if the sentence is completely in text speak, it annoys the hell out of me as well. The odd drop in like Ive done here is fine though IMHO.

Should usenet speak be banned as well? :giggle:

It may be a different matter, but:
a) I find poor grammar more annoying than people deliberately being short with words,
b) the poster made the comment of: "some employers are helping staff with basic maths and english.. I wonder why"... I found it highly amusing that the poster struggled with basic english also :-D
#15
You can't expect everyone to have good grammar though, At least speaking normally is possible for everyone to do without much difficultly!

My grammar is terrible, I didn't pay attention at school and as such have got a clue where commas go, I place them where I think there should be a pause, But when should that comma turn into a full stop?
#16
I do expect it. I just think, kettle and black with that previous post though.
#17
Find myself using it all the time in my texts - but not to the full extent - to=2 etc etc.
The odd bit of text language tends to slip in my posts but never ever fully!
banned#18
you cant really force people to not use text speech, imagine how much work that would mean for the mods! as long as its legible i dont really mind
#19
I absolutely hate it, one of the most annoying things in the world, even when I text people I don't use it :giggle:

I'm not saying mods need to moderate peoples text speak style posts, But It would be nice to see them making an effort (on their own accord) to write properly. (The members that is, Not mods.)

there are probably lots of things people dont like about this site, you cant keep every1 (lol) happy, if it was a big enough problem for you im sure you wouldnt still be posting here, but i do understand your point and will make every effort 2 not use text language (if i remember) :)
#22
Its not a big problem, Infact just a niggle, But its an issue that can be resolved easily, Which is more the annoying thing.

When I see a helpful post made by someone using text speak it loses some credibility IMO, Simply because they've made the effort to help, But then made it as hard as possible to read!!!

i probably dont mind it because of my generation:)

your just picky then :)

EDIT: sorry i swear this just got moved to misc but nevermind, can remove any posts that aren't required
#27
i started to use it more and more on texts to shorten it down so it fit onto 1 text rather than 2.

thing is then you start to use it more and more and instinctly?? use it else where.

always try and go back and do it properly though if im online.
#28
Don't be so picky :). People use slang in every day life, I bet you do too.
#29
Slang?, Well to a degree yes, I've annoyingly said for the last 7 years "innit" really annoying habit!, Tried to cut down and just say "isn't it".

Good innit?

gosh how perfect your life must be, I have never professed to have a perfect grasp of the english language, and found that having to write long reports without the aid of spell checker and had to use a dictionary, has helped but have not gone down the road of text speak for the easy option, my employers obviously thought I had more to offer, than worrying about me getting a comma or the wrong tense in the wrong place, but what grips me the most is those who pontificate like yourself on the rights and wrongs of perfect grammer.. and have no conception of the struggles that the poster had during his formative years at school..

I actually found it sad that your amused ..
#34
I find text speak almost impossable to read I generally don't make the effort if I'm honest

I know exactly who you are talking about Iom and I completely agree with you. It really gets on my man boobs. I wanted to start a thread similar to this one, but I knew the kids would start with "wots it 2u m8. I use txtspk n Im rly cleva!"

I suggest anybody using text speak should be put in the oven, gas mark 8 for an hour!
#37
I've been wanting to start a thread for about 2 months, But thought i'd get the old "if you don't like it **** off", So didn't!

I just thought it would make the people see other opinions, Perhaps making them think twice about using txt spk.
