Why are the mods so strict on swearing or even anything subtly suggesting a swear or sexual word yet they link to Bitterwallet ? - HotUKDeals

Really? Considering it's a "family forum" as people were warned yesterday, read page 4 of this thread and a mod/helper had "tidied" it up.

It's called hypocrisy. Deal above makes them money so why would they remove something rude from a 'family forum'. Either way thread will be locked and fall on deaf ears.

Can't have a 'family forum' with moderated content.

suppose its cos its not actually on this site iykwim.....

i think its all a bit inconsistent..... someone gets infracted for using stars instead of swearing...but on some threads...there is obvious sexual innuendos and pics of people in their underwear.... and nothing is done..... not that i care about either tbh but consistent they are not

It's meant to be a family site apparently. It's like the BBC linking to pornhub and saying it isn't their site.

Seems the members who suck up to the mods get away with it more. I don't see why infractions are given for using stars and just one letter in the first place. A certain member has a strap on for an avi, how is that allowed and filtering swear words isn't

 Someone was done yesterday on a thread I was just reading for not being considerate enough of age, yet quite graphic reviews like that are allowed and a mod has been in that thread tidying it, makes no sense.

honestly, do you really expect lateral consistent thinking from the people who run this site for profit!?!?!

hahahahahaha

by putting stars it means you are avoiding the swear filter which is an infractionable offence apparently..

so you'd be better off just swearing and letting it get caught by the filter itself..

But then you might not be able to differentiate whether its a **** or a **** or a **** etc....
What's so bad about swearing anyway ? It's just an arrangment of letters after all. As long
as it's not used agressively, don't see the issue my self

oh im defo with you on that one..

ive been pulled up for saying that i put the stars in before, bit sad.. suppose even saying F..... or S.... is implying a swear word if used in a cirtain context, and if they feel thats how its come accross, then they boot u up the er... foot..

and yes, there are far too many incosistancies on this site, my favourite quote (from myself actually) is:

Mods on here are like premiership referees!

How is it an inconsistency? If anything it one of the few things the mods have been very consistent with for many years - swearing and swear-filter avoidance is not tolerated.

The only thing they are consistent on is 'missing' posts by members they like which would warrent infarctions in the rules. I use the example again, but how is having a strap on as an avi allowed on a supposed 'family forum'.

The mods don't search for posts that break rules - they act on reports. If any member posts something against the rules and that post is reported, or indeed an avatar is deemed offensive and is reported, action can be taken. They do, in my experience, tend to be fairly liberal in allowing members to express themselves in various ways through their avatar...

the inconsistency of the mods is nuts, a guy gets "done" yesterday and a reminder placed that it's a family site etc and yet pretty much all last night the desperate housewive/white knight brigade reduced the place to a poor mans porkys frat house which is fine if your not going to proclaim this is a family site.

 really?

See this is what I don't get and it's been said before 100's of times here in FB. You had a mod yesterday, probably the same thread I saw today warning people and removing comments due to it being a family forum. Yet threads like you describe are allowed and the deal thread in here where some of the comments are not what I would call family friendly, it's all over the show.

how did I know no mod would comment in this thread - even though it has been read by at least one

i wonder how many threads there are on this site with 'ffs' in it, is that not avoiding the filter then but still getting it across?

We moderate to ensure the site's code of conduct is adhered to. However with the sheer volume of posts, it's not possible to review every comment. We rely on self regulation to assist in the management of such threads and we'll review each and every report, actioning where we see fit.

When the word filter kicks in, we're content to let the post remain, however we do review the context in which it is used. If it's part of a personal/offensive/insulting reference then we'll infract and remove. Deliberate attempts to avoid the swear filter where the profanity can be quite clearly read will also be infracted.

As for the 'deal' post mentioned earlier, some of the comments were indeed worthy of removal and some have been actioned. That thread will be reviewed for compliance as per the Code of Conduct.

With regards to the reference to BitterWallet there appears to be less moderation on comments. I think most if not all members know that. If family worries are a concern then parental responsibilities should take priority and be managed in that manner. This relates not only to BW but to all sites and activities.

Bitterwallet articles themselves have swears all the time, not just the comments. It makes it a more interesting read than most of the HUKD threads, as people can actually express what they think without worrying about it being deleted or infracted. Newspapers are always using asterisks to 'hide' swear words, as little kids who might see it probably wouldn't understand what the word is or wouldn't be able to work it out. Think there's very few if any users on here who don't hear or use swear words often enough. No response to the sexual avi's ?

This link a great example. Hardly family appropriate to link to. Suppose it gets more members on the site though so it's ok  Not that I take offence to the article just I think it's unfair you can suspend people for filtering swear words yet link to this site.

Its not really about fairness. BW has from the outset been targetted towards a specific audience which certainly isn't a family one. Mods have always made it clear swearing is unacceptable on here and rightly so whilst on BW it is welcomed and encouraged. Its just the way it is........

Wow..... just looking at the link posted above. Whilst you are spelling out "parents its your responsibility", which is all well and good, but the link exists and thats the issue (I guess) and why this thread exists.

I'm no prude... but I was pretty shocked at some of the comments within that link. (By shocked I mean extremely surprised it would be allowed at all.)

I most ridiculous aspect of BW is that I'm still on pre-moderation :( Everyone says **** and **** and nothing is done, but I'm not allowed :(
banned#34
It's still parental responsibility, indeed perhaps those that are in doubt can see the sort of environment that exists elsewhere. How many parents let their children roam Facebook thinking it's just the sort of place where kids keep in touch with their friends ?

I would say it's quite clear about what's tolerated within HUKD. The fact that there's blogs elsewhere targeted at distinct audiences is irrelevant in my opinion. I can only reiterate the code of conduct expected within this site.

i dont let my son on anywhere like facebook, and when he is on any site i am beside him, but it says it all when i no longer trust him to be reading over my shoulder when i am on hukd

and to be fair you cant say its a family forum then start saying its parents responsibilty crap, aint that like admitting it aint really family friendly you cant really push this site as family friendly, although why any youngster would want to be in misc is beyond me

Nothing should override parental responsibility, anything else is a poor get out clause. I was a kid once, believe it or not. I know what happens outside in the real world. I think it's fairly delusional if anyone expects the content here to be worse than the experiences of real life.

We have a Code of Conduct in place that should cover most areas of concern. We review all reports where members have concerns and respond accordingly.

Not missing the point at all. I've given my view and how we moderate. To see adults squabbling on forums with petty remarks is more worrying than some of the content/concerns raised here.

Then why remove some content with this warning attached

"Be aware these forums cover a wide range of age groups, such comments are silly to say the least."

I don't get it or does that only apply because bitterwallet is being mentioned and it has to be defended.
