  erm, a friend of mine took a trade to pm, new user, now cant complete as cant use pms? who dreamed this nonsense up?

  It's a good idea as it stops the opportunist scammers and the spammers who used to send you links to chinese wholesale tat.
  
  Many scammers used to operate on PM level only and never post whereas for a genuine member, making 10 posts is no effort at all with so many topics etc.

  Nah, there are other ways,just limit the pms to 5 per day or something, a total disabling of the service affects genuine members, whearas a 5 limit will flag these unwanted spammers.
  
  You could even have a system which detects duplicate posts and pms, the current system is just a lazy mans excuse of preventing something.
  
  I knew that a friend was after a certain item, saw one here so i linked them to it, they registered here for that reason only..
  
  Or, alternatively allow new members to be vouched by existing members, something has to change
