A decent mountain bike please... £10.00

Ok, here is the thing...
I have been asked to complete a cycle ride from Wembley to Fareham in aid of our sons football team.
I spent this afternoon doing a bit of maintenance on my bike (a 10 year old "Giant), added a trip computer, when out to test... and the shimano gear thingy twisted/broke and went into the wheel jamming everything. It looks terminal.
So, I am after a free or inexpensive alternative!!
Looking for a decent mountain bike if poss, with road tyres rather than MTB tyres if possible... it needs to be capable of an 80 mile ride, and all the training miles I am gonna have to do!!

Don't really have the money to spend, so nothing over £20 or so... and free if at all possible! Credit Crunch and all that!

I will collect, so it needs to be near Fareham in Hampshire.

Cheers
James

word of advice if you are doing any sort of distance on tarmac you don't want a mountain bike you want a proper road bike, lighter, less tyre surface etc etc... have a look on gumtree or freecycle, carboots usually have one or two kicking around.. mainly because mountain bikes are the in thing, even though they make no sense for most people. Anyway good luck in the hunt... ebay with buy it now and distance nearest first is usually a good for a look too.

To be honest, anything you get for free or £20 will not really be suitable for 80 miles.

It's doable but its gonna be hellish! Will probably be an old rusty bike with heavy steel frame and forks and probably heavy cheap dual suspension with 2 heavy unsuitable wheels and tyres.

I feel quessy just thinking about doing 2 miles in something like that so I wish you the very best of luck!

Yeah thats true. Good luck anyways mate.

Try and advertise on gumtree and check freecycle and here. You never know, you might get lucky.

I gave away this bike here a couple of weeks ago

Thats all a bit technical for me - sounds like it would do the job though!!

... but as previously asked - what you want for it?
