Not the sort you eat cereal or drink soup out of, but Crown Green, or Lawn Bowls wanted. Due to their weight I think shipping would cost a bomb, so maybe someone in Gtr Manchester or its environs might be able to help?
Either cash, or trades maybe?

How much you looking to spend? any size or weight you are after? I have some in the garage, used to play short mat for kent and england but not playing anymore so will go dig them out, think they are 4's or 5's and they are red too

Looking to spend as little as humanely possible. By your location and the fact you used to play at a National level you're probably looking at way more than we could afford. I'd love it if you proved me wrong though.

Are 4s/5s ok for a girl to use?

Ermmm, well I would suggest aiming for around size 2 to 3 if they are for a girl. Bowls are measured according to hand size, so if they have small hands probably a 2 in a medium or light weight. It also depends where you will be playing ( indoor, outdoor or short-mat) as to what sort of bias comes on the bowl. Do they you play ( or whoever they are for) on a regular basis? the club you play at should have some spares for you to try out and most poeple at a club will have an old set for you to use whilst you are just starting!

This is all really helpful, thanks. We've both played a bit of Petanque, but last week we sat down and watched a Crown Green match being held at a park near us. Took about 10 mins for us both to get the bug. I've had a look at ebay and there are a few sets that might be affordable, but when you add p&p on top it takes it beyond what would just be an impulse purchase.

join up! clubs are crying out for new players.. I joined up for my local club many a year ago and played for 5 fives until I met my current parent. With kids and house etc, i had choose to give up and sell bowls (woods). Looking back, it was a great few years.

The crown green bowls season is coming to an end, they may play short mat inside a clubhouse over the winter, or if there is a indoor centre near you go along and speak to someone they will love to have new players and may even let you loan some woods until you become good enough to buy yourself a set

Thanks for the advice, both of you. I am going to continue looking for an affordable set of size 2's for the OH's birthday I think.

A bump, just in case we're not all watching The Hotel Inspector.

And one final bump before I start mithering people on ebay :)
